The disease is a chronic inflammation of bronchi due to infection, physical and chemical irritations and allergic agents. The majority of the patients are of over middle age. It is characterized by chronic course and recurrent episodes. In some chronic cases, the disease may progress to chronic obstructive emphysema and chronic pulmonary heart disease. In TCM, this disease is related to the categories of "ke sou" (cough), "tan yin" (phlegm retension), "xiao chuan" (asthma) and so on. Main Points of Diagnosis 1. Long-term cough, sputum production and dyspnea which attack repeatedly and fluctuate are worse in autumn and winter. There may be fever, exacerbation of cough and mucopurulent sputum production, and dyspnea is more marked if acute concurrent infection is present. 2. Chronic bronchitis usually persists for many years. It can be classified into 3 stages, acute episodic stage, chronic persistent stage and clinically remissive stage. The last stage may last for a period of time and an attack may be induced by infections or catching a cold. Based on the clinical manifestations, the disease can be divided into simple chronic bronchitis and chronic asthmatic bronchitis. In the former, cough and sputum production are predominant. In the latter, in addition to the above symptoms, there are dyspnea and wheezing, indicating that the spasm of the smooth muscles of bronchi and bronchioli is an important pathogenic factor.

Urinary calculus is a common disease in the urinary system, including calculus of the kidney, urethral calculus, vesical calculus and urethral calculus. This disease incidence appears obviously in certain areas. The disease belongs to the categories of "sha lin" (stranguria form urolithiasis), "shi lin" (stranguria caused by urinary calculus) and "xue lin" (stranguria complicated by hematuria) in TCM. Main Points of Diagnosis 1.Symptoms 1) Calculus of the Kidney: There is a dull pain in the lower loins of the affected side, when the stones in the kidney radiates along the ureter to the lower abdomen and the perineal region which is associated with different degrees of hematuria. If the case turns into a complicated infection, the patient may have fever and pus cells in the urine. 2) Ureteral Calculus: In the lumbar region there is an acute pain which is often associated with hematuria. When the stones happen to be in the upper 1/3 part of the ureter, the pain will be in the costovertebral angle region and radiate to the part above iliac crest and external side of the abdomen. When the stones descend, the region of pain will also come down with the pain radiating to the thigh, testicle or vulva region.

ESTROGEN DEPENDENT TUMORS AND HERBS: How Modern Conditions Change Traditional Practices essay by Subhuti Dharmananda, Ph.D., Director, Institute for Traditional Medicine, Portland, Oregon For a while, women turned to certain products that were held out to be natural estrogens: for example, extracts of wild yam ( Dioscorea sp. ) which were claimed to either contain natural estrogens or to provide precursors that the body could transform to estrogens. Today, most women have learned that this was a fallacy: wild yam neither contains estrogens nor does it contain precursors that can be modified by the body; however, it does contain precursors that can be modified in the pharmaceutical factories to yield estrogens. Other herbs have been described as containing phyto-estrogens, plant compounds that act like estrogen or can indirectly induce an estrogen-like response. As with wild yam, these herbs have been sought after by women, but most of the herbs have extremely weak estrogen activity, especially in the dosage form usually provided. The situation has changed completely in the past few years. No longer does anyone ask if an herb therapy can provide estrogens, nor does anyone ask if an herb can increase the body's production of estrogens, unless they are hoping and praying that it won't do so. I am not asked for sources of estrogen enhancing herbs for women entering menopause, but, instead, I am asked to provide assurance that an herb therapy

Medicinal Herbs In
Chinese Medicine
by Micki Iborra People often read of a particular herb's ability to make them thin, vital, or cure their illness. This in most cases is misleading and a partial truth. The claims made for energy enhancement or weight loss will rarely work for all body types. Different bodies are energetically different and do not have the same energetic needs. Also, many times an herb becomes well known or popular and consequently starts to show up as an ingredient in all sorts of products. One such herb is ginseng. Ginseng is used to supplement energy (chi); however, there are different qualities and types of ginseng. Certain varieties are appropriate for individuals that are weak, energetically cold and overall deficient. However, if the same herb is given to an individual considered energetically warm, it will exacerbate the condition. It could make that person restless or hyperactive. The healing qualities of an herb depends on many things: cultivation, harvesting, storage, selection, discernment of quality, and the different processing methods used. Processing is done to increase potency. For instance, an herb can be decocted or made into a medicinal tea to draw out the medicinal qualities; substances can be sliced to increase the surface area and potency, or alcohol can be used to extract the volatile oils.

He or she often wants to "hang ka" (make a cough sound like "hang ka" ) or has irritated coughs. 2. The patient has a sensation of obstruction and fullness in the throat and a feeling of being blocked when swallowing without any food but no difficulty in eating. 3. The patient is apt to feel nausea and vomiting when he or she gets up in the morning.

54. Arterial Hypertension
Describes in detail how TCM practitioners in China solve this disorder with traditional strategies and herbs.
http://www.tcmtreatment.com/images/diseases/hypertension.htm
You are browsing: Arterial Hypertension
Systemic arterial hypertension is defined as elevated arterial blood pressure, with systolic pressure over 160 mmHG and /or diastolic pressure over 95mmHG. Blood pressure that is consistently 140 mmHG systolic and/or 90mmHg diastolic or higher is considered border line hypertensions. Hypertension is usually of two types: primary and secondary. Essential, or primary, hypertension is systemic arterial hypertension of unknown cause; 90 to 95 percent of systemic hypertension cases fall under this category. Secondary hypertension is elevated systemic blood pressure of known cause; five to ten percent of systemic hypertension cases are of this type. In this article, we discuss only the traditional diagnosis and treatment of essential hypertension. In traditional Chinese medicine, essential hypertension is included in the syndromes of headache and dizziness due to interior injury. Etiology and Pathogenesis Hyperactivity of liver-yang The liver is related to mental activities, such as thinking and worrying. Mental upset or a fit of anger may cause hyperactivity of liver yang, and as a result, headache or dizziness occurs. On the other hand, excessive liver yang turns into fire, which in turn, injuries liver yin and eventually leads to hyperactivity of liver yang.

In addition, there exists a capsular senile cataract as a complication of mature or hypermature stage of cortical cataract.
