Herb Gardening, Gathering and Medicine Making News
Last update April 5, 2003
March Full Moon, just a few days before the Spring Equinox. A new growing season is begun!
March 18 - We ordered a bunch of herb and vegetable seeds from Johnny's Selected Seeds this week, and are anxiously awaiting their arrival. In preparation we cleaned out the greenhouse today, and planted six flats of rosa rugosa seeds.
March 25 - Our seeds arrived and we immediated planted a variety of hot peppers and our tomatoe seeds. These are stacked in a warm spot near the stove. Lots of perennial herb seed was planted in beds in the greenhouse yesterday. These will have several weeks of cold stratification and then germinate as the temperature warms. Among the herbs planted yesterday are lavender, bee balm, feverfew, mullein, rosemary, delphinium, ginkgo, codonopsis, lemon balm, lady's mantle, angelica, and yarrow. We've still a lot more seeds of all sorts to plant.
March 31 - We had about 4 inches of heavy snow last night! It looks like winter here again today, but we know it will melt fast. Poor woman's fertilizer is what we call these spring snows. Meanwhile, we've dug up and planted a few more beds in the greenhouse. Seeds that have gone into the ground or in flats over the last few days include more rosa rugosa seed, St. John's wort, licorice, passion flower, wild marjoram, bunches of lettuces and salad greens, our broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and kohlrabi seeds. Next up will be a variety of fresh and dried flower seed for pretty bouquets all summer. This week we have to start retrieving all the bare roots we put into our cellar last fall. We'll be dividing the roots, packing them in saw dust, and sending them off to FEDCO for their catalog sales.

Stop Bad Bugs from Hiding in Your Pots
Slugs, small snails, earwigs, millipedes, and sow bugs love to hide in the drain holes in pots. Over time, soil falls out of the drain holes, creating nice little caves for leaf-eating bugs to hide in during the daytime. They then crawl out at night to do their dining damage. Prior to adding soil to the pot, cut a piece of shade cloth of ample size to cover the single drain hole inside the bottom of a clay or plastic pot (about 3" by 3"). If you’re growing plants in a gallon or larger plastic nursery pot, cut the shade cloth about 6" larger than the diameter of the bottom of the pot. This will allow the shade cloth to come up 3" on all sides of the pot, covering all the drain holes. Then add the soil, pressing it slightly to make the shade cloth protrude slightly convex out the drain hole. Here at Lingle’s, we use 70% shade cloth, which is conveniently sold by the foot at large garden centers. This will keep all the soil in the pot while still providing adequate drainage, and keep all the bad bugs out!

http://www.lnstar.com/literature/missherb.htm
HERB GARDENING IN MISSISSIPPI Herbs put the zest in pasta sauces, the essence in a hearty soup, the zing in a refreshing cup of mint tea. Wanting to enjoy their sensory qualities is only a prelude to the satifaction and thrill of growing your own herbs, harvested at their fresh peak. Herbs, both the historic and newer cultivars, are used to flavor food, make a soothing tea, or add fragrance to the landscape or home; some have medicinal value. Whatever their uses, herbs embrace a large and varied group of many diverse kinds of plants. The group as a whole includes some very easy plants, enjoyed for centuries with little or no care, and others which are all but impossible to grow in Mississippi by even the best gardeners. Traditional herb gardens are collections of many of these unique plants; most contempary gardeners simply grow thrm without fuss alongside other plants, much like flowers. GOOD GARDENING The typical idea most gardeners have of growing herbs is based on stuff written in New England where herbs seem easier to grow. Some herbs do have a harder time in Mississippi because of our fickle climate and lack of reliable information. Many popular herbs cannot tolerate our typically heavy spring rains, hot summer nights, intense humidity and fickle winter temperatures (sudden hard freezes following weeks of sunny days). Our weather, coupled with heavy soils, also creates perfect conditions for root and leaf diseases.

with Mint The herb mint belongs to a large family with over 30 species, t he most common being peppermint and spearmint. Native to the Mediterranean and western Asia, mints interbreed so easily it is often hard for even the experts to distinguish and separate all the varieties. All mints have the volatile oil menthol, which gives mint that characteristic cooling, cleansing feeling. The Greeks believed mints could clear the voice and cure hiccups. In fact, mint is part of Greek mythology and according to legend - "Minthe" originally a nymph, and Pluto's lover angered Pluto's wife, Persephone, who in a fit of rage turned Minthe into a lowly plant, to be trod upon. Pluto, unable to undo the spell, was able to soften it by giving Minthe a sweet scent which would perfume the air when her leaves were stepped on - the aromatic herb Mint.

Indoor Culture Tips
"Windowsill gardening" requires the following considerations:
  • Water
Herbs require good drainage, whether in pots or the ground. Plants should be watered thoroughly and then allowed to get fairly dry before another drink. The best way to tell when they need water is to go by the weight of the pot - when light: water, when heavy: don't.

  • Feeding
If using a chemical fertilizer, reduce the amount used by 1/2 the requirements suggested by the manufacturer and feed monthly. We use an organic fertilizer by top dressing and cultivating into the top layer of soil, then watering in thoroughly.

  • Temperature
70 degrees during the day and above 55-60 degrees at night.

  • Light
We suggest a minimum of 4 hours of sunlight, ideally during the morning hours. If you don't have a sunny window, 16 hours of fluorescent lighting kept six inches above the plants will work. If your plants begin to stretch it usually means the light is not sufficient. Try another window, or additional lighting.

    Garden Therapy
Your personal witchcraft store Until recently I thought I had a "black thumb." That is, I killed every plant that came into my house - even the cactus! For years, I made no attempts to grow anything, believing that it was somewhat unethical to intentionally take responsibility for a living plant and then kill it for no reason. Thanks to my cat, Mojo, I am now the proud caretaker of a balcony herb garden. I'd like to tell you about my little garden because it has been of immense value to me, far beyond the value of the herbs I harvest. Mojo, a ten-year-old orange and white tabby, loves catnip. I mean, he really loves it, can't get enough of it. A while back a friend gave me some fresh catnip from her garden (she gave me lots of fresh herbs and now we can trade!). Mojo was elated, ecstatic, totally possessed. He seemed to think this was the most wonderful substance in the world and he reveled in rolling on the floor and rubbing his face in it. Of course, most cats do this even with dried catnip, but believe me, the experience appears to be much more intense with the fresh herb. Since I want my cat to be as happy as possible, naturally I decided to grow some catnip. Fearing my usual lethal effect on plants, I decided to put a pot out on the balcony. It was just a small pot and one small plant, surely I could keep it alive. Catnip grows well in sunny areas, and this is southern California after all. Maybe I could get away with it!

Everyday Advice Index Kitchen Herb Gardening Page 1 (of 1) Decide on a Selection of Herbs: A Matter of Taste Which herbs you grow in your garden can easily become the most complicated aspect of beginning an herb garden. A straightforward way to begin deciding which herbs to grow in your personal garden is to consider which dishes you like to eat best and choose herbs that are integral or complimentary to those particular dishes. For example, if you're a big pizza eater, fresh basil would be excellent layered between the sauce and cheese or crumbled over the cheese for extra punch. Also, consider which herbs will be the easiest to grow. Take a trip to your local garden store (or to friends' homes that have successful herb gardens already underway) to see which herbs they have growing as seedlings. To help you narrow down the choices, we've put together a chart listing easy-to-grow herbs, best ways to start growing them and recipes for dishes commonly made with the herbs:
