Sounds like fun, doesn't it? Heat wave distortion is the waviness you see just over the top of a hot object, like a car engine that has been running for hours on a hot summer day. The hot air rises and causes the light to be distorted as it passes through. The lower air pressure in the hot air has an index of refraction (IOR). Hence, photons get moved around while passing through. Unfortunately, I don't know what the IOR is for various conditions. Fortunately, this can be faked anyways with Mahlqa fire technique to build an animated D-Map. I think I'm getting goose bumps.

Referring to the US, the paper said it would "be like living in a blast furnace." Despite the dire warning, the summer of 1995 was not the nation's warmest summer ever. Ranking the last 101 summers by average temperature (with the warmest ranked 101 and the coldest, 1), summer 1995 in the US would fall in 69th place. But for the US and many other Northern hemisphere countries, the summer of 1995 nevertheless will be remembered for its intense heat waves. States from North Dakota to Maine experienced one of the hottest Junes on record. In mid-July a much publicized heat wave struck Midwestern, mid-Atlantic and New England states. While few temperature records fell, temperatures in many instances were the hottest in years and accompanied by extremely high humidity. This combination of heat and humidity pushed maximum daily effective temperatures into the 105-120° F (42-49° C) range over much of the eastern US. On average, an adult's body weight is made up of about 10 to 12 gallons of water (about 55 to 75 percent of body weight). An elderly person's body weight is only about half water. But, when exposed to extremely high temperatures, your body requires even more water to maintain its normal temperature. Extreme weakness and potential heatstroke may result if more than 10 percent of body weight is lost from dehydration or water loss. And the average adult loses about 2 1/2 quarts (about 10 cups) of water daily through perspiration, breathing and other body functions. What are the signs of dehydration? The effects of the body's loss of water are progressive: thirst, then fatigue, next weakness, followed by delirium and, finally, death. Though dehydration typically won't happen over the course of a single day, it is important to pay attention to signals of water loss and minimize risk of dehydration by drinking plenty of fluids throughout the daybefore thirst sets in. The 1915 heat wave was credited with 535 deaths from "heatstroke" as well as high general mortality for the summer. 1955 had the hottest July on record and accounted for a large number of deaths. In 1995, hot weather again claimed over 500 lives and was a contributing cause in more than 200 additional deaths. The 1995 deaths received dramatic media coverage because of the current requirement that deaths outside of hospitals be autopsied by the Cook County Medical Examiner. Below is a short exceprt from the Cook County Hospital Annual Report for 1916 p.15 showing the serious consequences of the weather that year: Heat Prostrations Cared for Another test which strained the service of the institution to the utmost came during the extreme heat of last summer when our empoyes worked day and night almost without sleep trying to save the lives of over two hundred persons who were overcome by heat. The patients were not merely given a bath and put to bed. The had to be put in large bath tubs filled with ice water and rubbed for half an hour or more until their temperature were brought somewhere near normal. When they were broutht into the hospital their tempertures could not be registered, for they were highter thatn the thermometer would record, 110 depgrees. The clothes of practically all these pattients had to be destroyed. The employes had to work in obnoxious odors with the patients delirious and having convulsions, and it is surprising that they themselves were not overcome with heat while working so hard."

Although mostly known for its cold and snowy winters the badger state of Wisconsin is not immune from the tragedies caused by heat waves. Probably the most memorable heat wave in recent history occurred in 1995 when two major heat waves affected most of Wisconsin. That summer 151 people died of heat and humidity along with approximately 400 heat-related illnesses. The 1995 summer heat waves hold the record as the No. 1 weather-related killer in Wisconsin since it became a state in 1848. Most deaths occurred in the major urban cities in southeast Wisconsin, as in every state hit by the heat wave that year the elderly and young age groups were hit the hardest. Again in 1999, three separate heat waves hit Wisconsin in July, claiming 20 lives. Twelve of these deaths were directly related to the extreme heat and humidity. For the other eight deaths, heat was found to be the secondary cause of death.
