The Technology and Media Department provides a wide range of support services to staff throughout the district as they create learning activities for students. Perry Township provides computer labs and computers in every classroom with up-to-date equipment and school-wide Internet access. Eight schools are equipped to provide distance learning activities linking our schools via interactive video with sites as close as another Perry Township school building or the Indianapolis Zoo to faraway places such as the Sea of Cortez, Alaska or Hawaii via the JASON Project A team of district and building-based technicians support the hardware, software, and networks. Each school selects computer software to support their curriculum. Several buildings have media retrieval or video distribution systems that allow video announcements, cable TV, and a variety of other forms of media to be viewed on classroom TVs. Students at every level have opportunities to learn communication skills through video production. The district is fortunate to have four technology staff development specialists working with teachers and staff to hone skills and integrate technology into the curriculum. A video library, cataloging and processing of library media materials, and maintenance of the library automation system are some of the district media services provided to the schools. Technology and the resources and programs of the school library media centers are viewed as tools to enhance instruction and learning.

In 1997, librarians either craved attentionor got it and wanted to get rid of it. But there were too many other times in this age of rampantly spreading attention-deficit disorder when, from my vantage point, getting attention seemed nearly impossible. You saw this in our news this year: the school districts that replaced librarians with assistants and the politicians who sought to cut public library funding to avoid raising taxes. Despite the downsides, the attention that librarians and libraries got this year is a very, very good sign and one I hope continues next year. Because without the attentive ear of administrators, politicians, and parents, librarians who work with young people can call it a day.

CDC awards funds to universities for research on how to prevent disease and injuries
As part of its new strategy to strengthen and expand the nation's public health research programs at universities, CDC announced today grants of $12.5 million to fund 50 research projects at academic health centers, research centers and university-affiliated programs across the country. The funding is part of CDC's Prevention Research Initiative, an effort to link the talents and skills of university-based scientists with the resources of health departments, community-based programs, and national organizations. "The awards ensure that public health research activities address problems affecting the nation's communities," says Dr. Jeffrey P. Koplan, director of the CDC. "The grants will help CDC and its partners conduct research that can directly improve community health and reduce the need for medical care." The grants cover a range of subjects, including prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, asthma, genetics and home, workplace and recreational injuries. (See complete list attached.) Activities include centers of excellence in prevention research, research projects to inform public policy, and research investigator training and development. The average grant is approximately $250,000. Most projects are funded for three years.

Technology Literacy Challenge Fund
By Edward Sugimoto Internet-based, technology training session for Hawaii's educators President Bill Clinton has long been on a mission to educate America's youth in technology, proposing his Educational Technology Initiative of all children being technologically literate by the dawn of the 21st Century. His challenge has been felt all across the nation where computer filled classrooms replace old storage facilities, telecommunications equipment enhances existing communication devices, and Internet access is as available on school grounds as the nearest jungle-gym set. Locally, the Hawaii State Department of Education is taking full advantage of the Clinton's Technology Innovation Challenge Grant with education-based trainings like the Technology Literacy Challenge Fund Training Site ( http://www.k12.hi.us/~tlcf/
