Hawaii. American FactFinder (U.S. Census) Hawaii, the "Aloha State"
Abbreviation:
HI The name Hawaii is believed to be an English adaptation of the native word for "homeland" ( hawaiki or owhyhee ). First settled by Polynesians sailing from other Pacific islands between A.D. 300 and 600, Hawaii was visited in 1778 by British Captain James Cook, who called the group the Sandwich Islands. Following its annexation in 1898, Hawaii became a U.S. territory in 1900. Hawaii is the youngest state, joining the Union in 1959 as the 50th state, just after Alaska. Hawaii is world famous for its pleasant climate and spectacular beauty. It has deep-blue seas, brilliantly colored flowers, graceful palm trees, magnificent waterfalls and dramatic volcanoes. Hawaii consists of a chain of 132 islands; the eight main islands are at the southeastern end of the chain. Hawaii, the "Aloha State" has many customs originating from the original Polynesian settlers.

(University of Hawaii) Biogeography is the study of how geography affects the biological world. Geographic features play a dominant role in shaping Hawaii’s natural world and make it a great place for biogeographic studies. The Hawaiian islands make up the most extensive archipelago on earth. They contain an incredible diversity of terrain, habitat, and climate zones. Because of its continuous formation over the hot spot, Hawaii represents the world’s longest timeline of island formation. Scientists ‘travel through time’ as they study this island chain. Hawaii’s extreme isolation has been the foremost influencing factor in the unique evolution of these islands. At right is a world map with Hawaii at the center (as all maps should be.)
(Jack Jeffrey) Hawaii is the most isolated island groups in the world. The nearest continent, North America, is over 2500 miles (4000 km) away. This extreme isolation made it difficult for plants and animals to colonize the islands. The odds of surviving the journey by air or sea is small; making it here and establishing a reproducing population is miraculous. On average, an invertebrate successfully colonized Hawaii once in every 70,000 years, a plant once in every 100,000 years, and a bird once in every million years. Above, an endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal basks on an island beach just like any other tourist.

CHAPTER 17
HAWAII
T he Hawaiian archipelago is a string of islands and reefs, 3,300 kilometers long, that forms a broad arc in the mid-Pacific. The archipelago begins in the east with the island of Hawaii and ends almost at the international date line with a small speck in the ocean called Kure Atoll ( Map 16 : 21K). Only the easternmost 650 kilometers of the state contains islands of any size, as well as almost all of the state's population. It is this portion that is usually considered as the actual "Hawaii." The eight main islands of HawaiiOahu, Hawaii, Maui, Kauai, Lanai, Molokai, Niihau, and Kahoolawecontain more than 99 percent of the state's land area and all but a handful of its people. The island of Hawaii, at 8,150 square kilometers, comprises nearly two-thirds of the state's total area, and it is often referred to as simply the Big Island. The smallest of the eight, Kahoolawe, is 125 square kilometers and is uninhabited. LOCATION AND PHYSICAL SETTING Hawaii is near the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Honolulu, the state capital, is 3,850 kilometers west of San Francisco, California, 6,500 kilometers east of Tokyo, Japan, and roughly 7,300 kilometers northeast of the Australian coast. This might be viewed as a case of extreme isolation, and until the last few centuries this was probably true. But as countries around the Pacific Basin began to communicate more with one another and to use the ocean's resources, these islands became an important center of interaction.

COMMENTARY The New Geography-Where Does Hawaii Fit In?
By Jeff Bloom and Rob Kay
In our last column we looked at an exciting new book by author and New York Times columnist Joel Kotkin. We believe Kotkin's commentary on how the digital revolution is reshaping the American landscape has a number of lessons for all of us in Hawaii. It provides us with clues as to how we might plan our future as a digital island and home to Information Age workers.
In short, Kotkin takes on the conventional wisdom that with the rise of technologies that make it possible for individuals to move away from large cities, geography is no longer as important as it once was. While on the surface this appears to be the case, Kotkin tells us that geography still plays a crucial determining where people live and work. Sure, people can live where they want, says the author, but "in reality, placegeographymatters now more than ever before."
Instead of fleeing urban areas, some cities, are becoming magnets for talented workers such as programmers, webmasters, marketing people and other highly skilled personnel whose intellectual capital are coveted by start ups. Much like Venice in the Renaissance, young, many unmarried 21st century high tech craftsmen are heading to certain types of cities that offer art, culture, food and nightlife that these individuals crave. San Francisco, Portland, Seattle or Boston are shining examples of the prototypical digital city.
Another type of New Economy worker, says Kotkin, is attracted to a community with quite a different set of surroundings, which he calls a "Nerdistan." This breed of of information worker prefers to live in spotless suburbs with top schools, parks, shopping centers and fiber optic connectivity. This crowd is generally middle-aged, married and often engineers. Examples of Nerdistans include Irvine, California or Austin, TX.

COMMENTARY The New Geography and What it Means to Hawaii
By Jeff Bloom and Rob Kay
In our previous two columns we explored New York Times columnist Joel Kotkin's views on how the digital revolution is reshaping the American landscape. We believe there are lessons in his book for the Aloha State if we're interested in become a home for New Economy workers.
In Kotkin's parlance, Hawaii can strive to become a high tech "Valhalla". These types of communities, found on the mainland, are sprinkled throughout the Rockies and on both Coasts. The main criterion for these high tech nirvanas is their quality of life. Formerly mining or fishing towns they are now being settled by Silicon Valley executivesthe New Economy elitewho want a better "QOL" than the crowded corridors of Highway 101 or Route 128 can offer.
    Hawaii the New Valhalla
So where exactly does Hawaii fit into the scheme of things? Do we have what it takes to compete with the mainland to become a technology center populated by top-flight professionals? Can we offer high tech workers the same cultural amenities found in San Francisco or Seattle? Do we have the modern, wired suburbs with great public schools that high tech might find in Austin, Texas or Irvine, California? What exactly is important for high tech workers?
To answer this question let's look at the factors (in order of importance) entailed in determining where a new economy company might locate itself. (This list can be found in an essay by Joel Kotkin and his colleague Fred Siegel called The Remaking of City and Countryside in the New Economy-see http://www.newgeography.com/)
