General Information The Office of Continuing Education (OCE) is Windward O`ahu's center of cultural activity and personal enrichment. It seeks to improve the quality of life and provide direct educational assistance to individuals and special interest groups. The Office of Continuing Education provides services for individual communities and the general public by making available a variety of instructional, cultural, recreational, and vocational services in which the institution has special competence or the community has special needs. From its new location in the Hale Kuhina Building at Windward Community College , OCE also facilitates the production of many events and activities open to the public. The majority of these special events are held annually at Windward Community College's campus In its endless service to the community, the Office of Continuing Education offers many non-credit instructional opportunities at off-campus locations in Windward O`ahu. Persons who are interested in specific seminars or courses should contact the Office of Continuing Education at (808) 235-7433. This office also coordinates campus and off-campus programs for senior citizens. To better service the community, The Office of Continuing Education has convenient hours that allow for those with varying schedules. We are open throughout the work week and on Saturdays (see below schedule). Our answering machine is kept on to intercept callers whom we are unable to accommodate during our regular business hours.

Laboratory for Microbiological Oceanography: General Information The Laboratory for Microbiological Oceanography is a research unit within the recently created School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Professor David M. Karl currently serves as unit Head and co-ordinates all activities in the Laboratory. He also holds an appointment in the Department of Oceanography where he performs his academic duties including teaching and graduate student advising and an appointment in the SOEST Division of Oceanic Biology where he currently serves in the capacity of research oceanographer. Professor Karl has recently been appointed an Affiliate Faculty member of the Bermuda Biological Station for Research, Inc. A brief summary of the relevant organizational units and a description of the research activities of the Laboratory for Microbiological Oceanography are presented below. Burns School of Medicine is currently one of only a handful of schools in the nation to convert its curriculum to a problem-based learning format. Adapted from McMaster University, Canada, and called the MD Program, it was introduced in the fall of 1989, and is now fully integrated into the undergraduate program. Problem-based learning marks a profound reshaping of the entire learning process, one much better suited to training the high-quality physicians of the future. The traditional system, with its emphasis on teacher-directed learning, passive student participation, and rote memorization of massive amounts of information, was seen as increasingly inefficient and outmoded. Problem-based learning (PBL) seeks to solve the shortcomings of this conventional approach with a new mode of learning that is active and dynamic, self-motivational and directed. Instead of crowded, impersonal lecture halls, students meet in a small problem-based modules with a faculty member to discuss problems in health related issues. These are called Health Care Problems (HCP's) and are used as a springboard for learning, which is why this system of learning if referred to as problem-based learning (PBL). For this system to work, it is essential that students be self-directed and take responsibility for their own learning. The primary objective of PBL is to accumulate the concepts and facts of medicine in a clinical context, basing the need to know on relevant problems. Students are trained to think critically, to evaluate new information and research data, and apply their new knowledge to the problem at hand. They become actively involved in the learning process, and are not simply passive recipients of information.

HAWAII SCHOOL EXPENDITURE REPORTING SYSTEM (HSERS) Fiscal Year 1999-2000 The Hawaii Department of Education (DOE) is a unified statewide school district responsible for providing educational programs and services to over 180,000 students in 256 public schools. The Legislature annually appropriates approximately $1.09 billion in general funds to the DOE, and approximately $250 million in general funds to other state agencies, for expenditures relating to lower education.Standards and Accountability The DOE has made significant progress toward achieving a standards-based educational system with high expectations and increased accountability at all levels. Consistent with the focus on achieving standards and establishing improved accountability, the DOE recognizes that many different audiences are interested in how funds are expended for our public school system. The Legislature stated in Act 199, Session Laws of Hawaii (SLH) 1999, that "accurate and organized educational expenditure reporting is crucial for accountability and school-based decision-making". The DOE agrees with this statement, and has taken major steps to improve its reporting of financial information to the Board of Education, the State Legislature, and the general public. As part of this effort, the DOE has implemented the Hawaii School Expenditure Reporting System (HSERS). True Costs of Public Education The financial information in HSERS portrays the "true costs of public education," including related costs pertaining to education incurred by other state agencies, such as the Hawaii state Departments of Accounting and General Services; Attorney General; Budget and Finance; Health; and Human Services.
