General Education Basic and Area Requirements
(Effective August 1, 2000, Updated June 12, 2001 The General Education Basic and Area Requirements ensure that students receive a sound foundation in the liberal arts. The University's goals for General Education are also promoted throughout the baccalaureate curriculum in Writing Intensive courses, in courses that meet the Hawaiian/Asian/Pacific requirement, and in upper-division courses in all major programs. The following Basic and Area requirements apply to all baccalaureate degrees.
I. General Education Basic Requirements
A) English Composition Requirement (3 semester hours)
  • Eng 100, 100T or ESL 100
(All entering Freshmen, continuing or transfer students without English 100, and all students for whom English is not a native language must take the UH Hilo Writing Placement Examination.)
B) Quantitative Reasoning (3 semester hours)
Select from any Math course at the 100 or 200 level (except 199 or 299)
C) World Cultures (6 semester hours)
Select two courses from:
  • Agriculture: Ag 230 Anthropology: Anth 100, 170 (same as Mus 170)

General Education Requirements
General Education requirements are foundation courses within a program of study that help students acquire knowledge, skills, and ways of thinking that contribute to lifelong learning. Students new to college can begin taking General Education courses while exploring their interest before committing to a program of study. General Education requirements may consist of Written Communication, Mathematical or Logical Thinking, World Civilization, Oral Communication, Foreign and Hawaiian Language, Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences courses. The General Education requirements, however, do vary between programs of study in breadth as in the Associate in Arts degree in Liberal Arts or in depth as in the Associate in Science and Associate in Technical Studies degrees Associate degree programs of study are divided into (1) General Education requirements and (2) program or area requirements. conference for 1999!!! Hi guys, I am back in the office today. Alaska
was wonderfulsunny skies, warm weather. I saw lots of wildlife. The
people are really niceand yes, the men are beautiful. Jean and I went
to a traditional performance of a Yup' ik Eskimo group called Pumyua, it

We are delighted to announce that Sister Mary Ellen Smoot, Relief Society General President will be the keynote speaker at the devotional on Friday, April 27 at 9:00 a.m.
At a time when the "world is engulfed in turmoil and confusion" the Relief Society Declaration is a "bold affirmation for women to find their meaning, understand their purpose, and seek the direction their lives should go." (Sweet is the Work, Mary Ellen W. Smoot)
Mary Ellen W. Smoot, the fifth of six daughters, was born in Ogden, Utah and raised in Clearfield, Utah. She is married to Stanley M. Smoot and they are the parents of seven children and 46 grandchildren.
In 1983, her husband was called to serve as mission president for the Ohio Columbus Mission. After one year, he was called to open the Ohio Akron Mission. With Kirtland and Hiram as part of this mission, Smoots were part of the activities surrounding these historical sites, including the dedication of the Newell K. Whitney Store in Kirtland. It is here they developed their great love for public affairs.

Super Especially For Youth is a program designed with the youth in mind. Its purpose is to help youth strengthen their testimonies, encourage them to read and study the scriptures, increase their selfesteem, gain a desire to serve,seek the saving ordinances of the gospel, and deal with today's challenges. FACULTY Brother Marshall is an instructor at the University Institute of Religion at the University of Utah. He has worked in church education for many years, teaching both Seminary and Institute. Attracting guest faculty and participants from around the world, the Straub Foundation conferences provide new advances and the latest research on prevention, treatment and management of health topics of interest to health professionals and the general public.
  • Health Professionals:
    Each year, the Foundation assesses the community health care needs and organizes major conferences on selected topics for health professionals with a community-wide organizing committee of physicians and other health professionals.
    General Public:

    Since 1994, the Foundation has organized one-day public meetings presented in everyday language by guest lecturers and local faculty.
  • Community Outreach Program: In 1997, the Straub Foundation launched a community outreach program, taking its health education programs directly into under-served rural communities. Examples of community outreach programs include:
  • Keiki Asthma Fair: A program targeted to children diagnosed with asthma featuring unique asthma modules and a mini-olympics.

    The Straub Foundation is dedicated to improving the health of Hawaii's people through research and education. It is a unique and vital community resource. An independent 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, the Foundation is directed by a volunteer Board representing medicine, law, business, education and the community. Building today for our health tomorrow, the Straub Foundation intends to increase its activities to focus on those programs that most benefit the Hawaii community it serves. THE FOUNDATION IS INVOLVED IN A WIDE SPECTRUM OF PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES WHICH INCLUDE:
