Paragliding is the simplest form of human flight. A paraglider is a non-motorized, foot-launched inflatable wing. It is easy to transport, easy to launch, and easy to land. The paraglider itself is constructed of rip-stop nylon from which the pilot is suspended by sturdy kevlar lines. The pilot is clipped into a harness and oriented in a sitting position for maximum comfort. With a paraglider, you actually fly like a bird, soaring upwards on currents of air. Paragliders routinely stay aloft for 3 hours or more, climb to elevations of 15,000', and go cross-country for vast distances. BACK TO LIST OF QUESTION

AAC At Work For The Hang Gliding Community
The AAC recently provided its support in a dispute over hang gliding in Cochrane. Tony Burton, AAC Director, and member of the Alberta Soaring Council, reports: Muller Hang Gliding in Cochrane, a long-established and nationally-recognized business and training site for hang gliding and paragliding, is being threatened as a result of a complaint to the Municipal District of Rocky View which is to be appealed to the MD on 12 April. As a sailplane pilot, I was passed the information summarized below and asked if I could not assist in getting a range of aviation interests involved beyond the local community in supporting their appeal. Hang gliders and, more recently, paragliders have been flying Cochrane Hill since Willi Muller made the first flight in 1973. The Mullers—Willi, Vincene and Chris—moved to the hill in 1974 and from there have been the backbone of foot-launched flying in Canada for almost 30 years. Their operation on Cochrane Hill has been a tremendous resource, not just for local pilots, but also for many visiting pilots from around the world and for the community of Cochrane. Over the years they have invited anyone, pilots and spectators, to enjoy the great flying and their tremendous hospitality. Continued use of this site is now threatened by the loss of their business license if a single complaint and the rigid application of a recently-passed business bylaw is upheld. More importantly, their livelihood is threatened.

It all began when.....
It's hard to pinpoint exactly when the dream of Icarus became a reality, but there were certainly several notable milestones during the development of an unpowered personal flying machine. During the latter part of the 19th century a German engineer made over 2,000 successful flight on weight shift hang gliders. His name was Otto Lilienthal, and the hang gliders used were similar in design to the one illustrated here. The notes he kept of those experimental flights were a major source of inspiration for early aviation pioneers. Unfortunately, once the Wright brothers achieved powered flight, Otto and hang gliding were largely forgotten.
Forgotten that is until the late 1940's, when Dr Francis Rogallo (a NASA scientist) and his wife became interested in the subject. Initially they worked in their spare time developing a flexible wing kite, which they patented in 1948. In the late 1950's NASA joined the "space race", and conducted a number of tests to see if the Rogallo wing could be used as a steerable recovery parachute for their space capsules.

After our insurer declined to renew our 3rd party liability coverage for pilots, schools and sites back in Feburary 2003, things were looking a little dicey for this season. Luckily, and with much effort on the part of Gregg Humprheys (HPAC Insurance chairman) a new insurance company has been found that is willing to replace the lost policy. The down side is that the new policy comes with a 60% hike in the premium over that which was paid last year. Coming on the heels of last year's 30% increase, the HPAC bank account is taking a major hit. Annual HPAC pilot fees will be going up. There is a monthly meeting on the second Monday of each month at 8 p.m. in the Clinton Social Club. Redruth.     At the end of 2001 DUSA purchased 3/4 of acre in Bright to replace its recreational facility ETNA Lodge sold earlier in the year. Bright is located in North Eastern Victoria about 80 kilometres south east from Wangarratta and is an easy 3 hour drive from Melbourne. Bright is within the Alpine Shire and has ready access to activities such as:

    and the list goes on. Bright is a very picturesque town and hosts a number of facilities including pubs, restaurants and all levels of accommodation.     Entrepreneur's Start-Ups magazine , By Mike Besack, July 2001 What kind of a man grabs a set of artificial wings and charges full-blast off a cliff? Turns out, a smart businessman. Plug in your pun of choice: In this business, the sky's definitely the limit. "I must say, the first two years we've seen nothing but growth. And it's so easy. People love it," says the 35-year-old Kroll. "All you need to know for hang gliding is, run like hell and don't touch anything." Kroll earned his college degree in music, of all things, but started hang gliding in 1984. After doing a few instructing gigs in Australia, he decided to take a shot at starting his own business. After all, the closest hang-gliding company to his Bay Area home was in San Diego. "I noticed that my boss in Australia paid off his house at the beach in three years," Kroll says. "I started thinking, if that guy could do that well in Sydney, I can do well in San Francisco." He has. Kroll, with his introductory tandem lessons, takes his customers up to 3,000 feet over the San Francisco Bay after just five minutes of instruction. That's all it takes. His hang-gliding tours leave from Mt. Tamalpias State Park, 10 minutes north of the Golden Gate Bridge, and his introductory Aquaglider lessons soar over Alcatraz and the rest of the Bay and last for about 30 minutes. The cost is about $250 a pop, and Kroll even straps a video camera on the wing so the hang gliders can have a souvenir at no extra charge.
