Experts claim prescription errors kill 7,000 each year

By George Lewis
NBC NEWS CORRESPONDENT Doctors' sloppy handwriting can sometimes lead to tragic results. NBC's George Lewis reports on a common but deadly problem. "We decided to look into why we had our medication errors," Hackmeyer says, "and one of the most important areas was physicians’ handwriting." All too often, doctors treating patients scribble prescriptions for medication illegibly. The means sometimes people get the wrong medications. "The worst case scenario is that the patient could die," says hospital pharmacist William Churchill. "That, obviously, is the worst case." His doctor said he prescribed Isordil, a heart medication. The pharmacy read it as Plendil, a blood pressure drug. The Vasquez family sued and won a $450,000 judgment. According to the Institute of Medicine, prescription errors kill up to 7000 Americans each year. The annual cost to society is estimated at $77 billion. Doctors in this country write three billion prescriptions each year. The urgent issue now is how to make sure the medicine the doctor orders is really what the patient gets.

Penmanship, From Palmer to Palm Pilot
The Writing on the Wall
by Jyoti Thottam January 17 - 23, 2001 ill Lilly was the only one of three 1952 graduates of the Zanerian College of Penmanship to earn a gold seal on his diploma, and he is fairly certain it was the walnut juice ink that made the difference. To make it, walnut hulls are boiled and simmered for hours until they give up a pale brown liquid. Powdered gum arabic stabilizes the ink, and it is aged until ready to use—like a fine wine, it improves with age. The Zanerian, based in Columbus, Ohio, was one of several schools that taught penmanship and ornamental script until the early 1960s, and students wrote out their own diplomas as their final exams. Lilly, now 73, was determined to graduate with honors, so he used a bottle of 30-year-old ink. "I could make my script more delicate-looking," he says. "The older it gets, the better it looks." But even a gold seal from the Zanerian, which Lilly remembers as the Harvard of penmanship schools, was not enough to find him a job anywhere close to Columbus, let alone his hometown of Marion in western Kentucky. "After the first six months [at the college], I was aware that the art form was just about done," he says. Typewriters were sending master penmen, who once wrote by hand most of the documents used by business and industry, into obsolescence. Jobs in the field, like doing ornamental work on diplomas and certificates, were disappearing. Lilly had what seemed like a promising offer to work with the White House penman, but it paid no more than truck driving. Instead, he put down his pen and spent 20 years as a warehouseman for International Harvester, taking up ornamental penmanship only after retiring.

computers kill our penmanship!
September 24, 2002 Remember a few entries back, I was feeling annoyed at writing a bad essay for my APUSH test? Well, it turns out that I did a good essay. When Mr. G was talking about the various types of essays he had read from our class, he mentioned "one left out the Stamp Act altogether, which I would normally balk on, but since it was written well, I let it slide." Surprisingly enough, that one was mine. It's nice to know that my default writing skills are of the AP standard. All I need to do is work on handwriting and timing. I can write well if I write slowly, but only this year have I improved on handwriting. Good penmanship is key to impressing AP readers who have to read essays a day. They control your college potential! (If you decide to take AP tests.) Also, it lends an extra air of absurdity to notes like "DON'T HAVE A COW, MAN!" written surreptitiously during class. Oh, Bart. You and your devilish ways.

Tools Print this article E-mail this article Subscribe to this paper By Eric Heyl TRIBUNE-REVIEW Saturday, September 14, 2002 In Michelle Dresbold's world, a signature is almost akin to a fingerprint. Show her sufficient swirls and swoops, enough dotted i's and crossed t's, and she can say with near certainty whether a signature on a given document is authentic. This talent is proving problematic for Allegheny County Treasurer John Weinstein and his father, Mel Weinstein, Kennedy Township treasurer and power broker. Dresbold, Pittsburgh's Sherlock Holmes of handwriting, told the county elections board Thursday that 28 absentee ballots filed in Kennedy back in 1997 were completed by Mel Weinstein. If Dresbold's assertions bear out that the number of votes significantly exceeds the legal limit of one, it would indicate ol' Mel takes a much more active role in democracy than most. Father and son may share a similar civic-mindedness. John Weinstein appears to have filled out five 1997 Kennedy absentee ballots, although Dresbold said she couldn't reach a definitive conclusion without reviewing additional handwriting samples.

This software is FANTASMIC!! (and yes, that is a word, because I added it to my spell checker *smile*) I could not believe all it offered as far as customization, it is simply cool! No other words needed to describe it. If you have a child, that is beginning to learn how to write, or needs practice on neatness etc. I fully, 100% suggest this software. http://members.aol.com/PennyGar/italics.html
I have several hang-ups about the cursive traditionally taught in public schoolsyou know, the kind no one can read. For one thing, I was always embarrassed of my own handwriting. It was fairly legible but it wasn’t the pretty, flowery, feminine way that most girls wrote. It was very plain and ugly. In my work/study college days, I was typist for the campus newspaper. I spent most of my time trying to decipher the scrawl made by the journalist students. After that frustrating job, I switched to printing so I wouldn’t be inflicting frustration on others. We live in a world of “Please print” because few people have legible handwriting. But the italic handwriting method changes all that. It is a beautiful and legible hand. The transition between printed italic, called basic italic, and cursive italic is very easy. It is the only method that does not have drastic changes between the two. If you need additional help to learn italic handwriting, check out a library book on calligraphy. The italics used for children is slightly simplified from what you’ll find in the books. It is not necessary to have a penmanship workbook for every grade level. Once a child has learned basic italics, he does meaningful copy work for more practice. After some time, he’ll be ready to learn cursive italics. Copy work and dictation will provide the practice.

Ornamental Penmanship by John DeCollibus home products download catalog custom invitations ... original pieces about ordering contact us About the artist About ornamental penmanship D uring America's Golden Age of Ornamental Penmanship (approximately 1850-1925), handwriting skills were valued as highly as education, business and commerce, or computer skills are today. Many men and women achieved fame for demonstrating high levels of expertise in decorative handwriting, while the most talented of these individuals became legendary as "master penman" of the era. T here were many different styles of ornamental penmanship. Among the most well-known of these was Spencerian Script, named for Platt Rogers Spencer (1800-1864), who is referred to as "the man who taught America how to write". His semi-angular style of cursive writing became the reference for American handwriting in the 19th Century. However, in the public excitement expressed towards decorative handwriting during the late 1800's, the style of ornamental penmanship that brought forth the most visual excitement was unique in the fact that it contained no letters at all. K nown as off-hand flourishing, this form of writing is essentially non-lettering penmanship. Instead of communicating thoughts and words, off-hand flourishing conveys images of grace and beauty through the use of artistic shades, hairline strokes, and gentle curves.

This handwriting-teacher's book/CD-ROM "Fluent Handwriting" was released July 1997, and is available from Amazon.com's online bookstore or from her site at http://www.BFHhandwriting.com - the method described in "Fluent Handwriting" was developed over a period of more than 20 years of experience in elementary school classrooms. The opportunity to observe the motor skills of young children enabled her to formulate methods that allow children to acquire the ability to write at the maximum speed with maximum legibility. If children learn to write with the most efficient movement possible for the human hand, little classroom time need be devoted to penmanship in years when so many other activities demand attention. Handwriting can be individual, and a joy! Dr. June E. Baskin, Ph.D.

Jittery handwriting is all too familiar to families and friends of people with severe Parkinson's disease. The involuntary tremor of Parkinson's can sometimes make handwriting almost illegible. But what if a computer could transform wobbly handwriting into penmanship that even a grammar school teacher would approve of? Hopkins biomedical engineers have created software that does just that. Users of the system write on a digitizing tablet, and a wave form version of the handwriting is fed into a computer. A software program then measures the characteristic frequency of the user's tremor. While tremor frequency varies from one person to the next, each person with Parkinson's disease shakes at a relatively constant frequency. The program then subtracts the tremor frequency, in effect cleaning up the handwriting. Parkinson's disease patients are not the only ones who might benefit from the technology. Brain injury, multiple sclerosis, and even the natural aging process can lead to pathological tremor, notes
