Physical Description Hamsters vary widely in physical appearance. They can be one solid color or multi-colored, ranging from brown, orange, black, white to gray. They may also have bands, arches, spots or other fur patterns. Popular breeds of hamsters include Syrian, Siberian, Teddy and Dwarf. They live two to three years. Behavior Hamsters are nocturnal, therefore they are most active at night. They have keen senses to aid them in the dark. They must be woken up very carefully or they will easily become irritable. They are fairly intelligent, very active and friendly. They should always be provided with toys to play with when awake. They have poor depth perception and may walk off of tall tables. Diet Hamsters need diets (Kaytee or Hagen) containing a minimum of 16% protein and 4 -5% fats. If the food is more than 90 days old or has been exposed to moisture, they should be discarded. Hamsters need a pelleted rodent diet as their primary food. Supplement pellets with fresh fruits and vegetables such as pesticide free broccoli, peas, carrots, grapes, apples, strawberries and bananas. Hamsters also like grass, clover and dandelions.

Eva's Home Page Eva's Cavy Page Eva's Mouse Page Eva's Rat Page ... Eva's Rat Articles Differing views on pet care:
I think it is very interesting that people have so many different views on the topic of pet care. I have been thinking about this a lot. Some people I know use the smallest cages they possibly can and they give their animals the cheapest and easiest-to-feed kind of food to the animals, in order to be able to keep as many animals as possible for breeding purposes. Some of these people, when asked, of course have totally other views on pet care than the person with just a few highly beloved pets. This is exactly as with dog owners. Some dog owners think it is totally ok to leave the dog alone all day, and take it out on a 5 minute pee walk once in a while. Other dog owners would feel that it is totally unthinkable to leave such a highly social animal as a dog alone all day, and would also take the dog out for long walks every day. Some dog owner's fool themselves by getting two dogs and think that two dogs may be happier together in the absence of their owner. But two lonely dogs are just two lonely dogs, waiting for their owner. It is better to pay somebody to walk the dog during the day, or even pay somebody (a human companion) to

72. Hamsters - General Care
pet hamsters are usually housed singly. pet hamsters are best fed commercialrat or mouse diets containing at least 16% crude protein.
http://www.caringtogether.com/exotics/hamsters2.html

Handling and Restraint
Hamsters handled frequently from a very young age are usually docile and rarely bite. Those with docile temperaments and a history of not biting can simply be picked up by using one or both hands, and then held in both hands or in one hand held against the body. Many hamsters develop untrustworthy personalities and begin to bite because they have been handled roughly or suddenly disturbed or awakened. Hamsters whose personalities are not well known must always be approached cautiously. A glove or small towel can be used to pick up these hamsters, or the animals can be encouraged to crawl into a small container, which is then removed from their enclosure. Unknown hamsters and those known to bite can also be picked up and restrained by grasping a large amount of skin behind the head. As much skin as possible should be grasped because their skin is so very loose. In fact, hamsters can literally turn nearly all the way around within their skins and bite a handler if this caution is not heeded!
[Top of Page]

Housing
Proper housing is a major factor in maintaining healthy hamsters. The psycho-social well being of the pets must be a primary consideration. Hamsters can be housed within enclosures made of wire, stainless steel, durable plastic or glass. The last 3 materials are preferred because they resist corrosion. Wood and similar materials should not be used to construct enclosures because they are difficult to clean and cannot withstand the destructive gnawing of rodents. Many pet stores sell durable colored plastic enclosures that include attached horizontal and vertical tubes through which the hamster can crawl for exercise. These are suitable enclosures for hamsters.

73. Rodent Care - Fact Sheet -- BC SPCA
If you have a pregnant animal consult a pet care book to make sure youare giving correct care. hamsters. hamsters are solitary animals.

Care of Rodents Below is some basic care information for rodents. Please consult detailed care manuals for these animals or check with your veterinarian. Hamsters, gerbils, rats and mice are members of the rodent family. They have long upper and lower incisors (front teeth) that grow continuously. All rodents require material to gnaw, in order to keep their incisors sharp and worn to the proper length. Hay, cardboard tubes and wood (apple, pear, willow) are all suitable for your rodent to chew on. Generally, rodents are more active at night and can be quite noisy!
Housing
A cage measuring 60 x 30 x 30 cm. is a minimum size for hamsters, gerbils and mice. Rats require larger habitats. Absorbent materials such as white wood shavings should be used to line the cage bottom. Gerbils and hamsters like to dig and burrow so adding a layer of peat moss allows them to exercise this behaviour. Clean the cage often at least once a week. Inside the cage, rodents should have a cardboard or wooden house, toys such as plastic tubes and small boxes, some shredded tissue for nest building and an exercise wheel for smaller rodents. Secure cages are a necessity as rodents, especially hamsters and rats, are real escape artists.

76. Hamsters Care OF
Furthermore, even less information is available to pet owners on the responsiblehome care of hamsters and their potential medical problems. FOOD AND WATER
http://www.cah.com/library/hamster.html
Hamsters Care OF
CARE OF HAMSTERS Hamsters are small, virtually tailless, velvet- furred rodents with enormous cheek pouches. They originated in the Middle East and southeastern Europe. The most common and popular, both as pets and laboratory animals, is the golden or Syrian hamster. Color and hair-type varieties of the golden hamster include cinnamon, cream, white, and "teddy bear" (the long-haired variety). Most of the hamsters sold as pets or used in research are the descendants of 3 littermates domesticated in 1930. The cheek pouches are a relatively unique anatomic feature of hamsters. They are actually a cavernous outpouching of the oral (mouth) cavity on both sides, extending alongside the head and neck to the shoulders. These pouches are used to store food and allow the hamster to transport food from where it is gathered to the hamster's den or nest. The food is then eaten later, at the hamster's leisure. Hamster owners not familiar with these cheek pouches often panic when seeing them fully distended for the first time, thinking they represent tumors or abscesses. Another relatively unique anatomic feature of hamsters is the paired glands in the skin over the flanks. These appear as dark spots within the haircoat and are much more obvious in males than females. These glands are used to mark a hamster's territory and also have a role in sexual behavior.

All About Hamster Care
    How to Care for Hamsters
Adapted from The Humane Society of the United States'
    Animal Sheltering "How To" Series.
Hamsters were living in relative obscurity until just 70 years ago, when a zoologist
discovered a family of these rodents in the Syrian desert. Today, hamsters' friendly
nature and adaptability have placed them among America's most popular small pets.
To learn how to fulfill the special needs of these cuddly creatures, some of whom
inevitably end up at shelters, follow the suggestions below.
      1. Set Up House
When putting together a hamster's temporary living quarters, consider the animal's natural habitat. In the wild, hamsters live underground, emerging under cover of darkness to search for food. Domestic hamsters still prefer the "night shift," so it's best to house them in a quiet, dimly lit room away from drafts, direct sunlight, and noisy animals. An aquarium that holds at least 10 gallons is usually suitable for hamsters, as long as the top of the tank allows for proper ventilation. A fine-mesh screen will do the trick, but make certain it's fastened securely to keep curious
