http://www.earthteacher.net/general.htm
You cannot teach people anything.
You can only help them to discover it within themselves.
Galileo
It seems awkward of a teacher to profess that you cannot teach anything, but perhaps Galileo has a point. Perhaps a new definition for teaching is in order. I believe that we, as educators cannot teach our students through lecturing endlessly or through the spurting out of random misplaced information. The art of teaching is about assisting others in learning for themselves. An ideal teacher can help their students to learn well beyond the walls of the regular classroom. Bringing the workd into the 21st century requires teachers that plant the seeds of learning in their students and then gently nurturing those seeds and watching them grow. Education is a continuous discovery. A discovery for those I teach and a discovery for the learner within myself. Galileo was right.

Welcome from the VC
South Bank campuses A to Z UG ... Student Union Studying at South Bank Helping you to achieve your potential South Bank has always maintained an open and progressive policy on the admission of students. Whilst many students are able to satisfy our stated academic entry requirements, others are not. Often, this does not reflect lower ability, but lower aspiration and awareness of the opportunities offered by universities. You will still be considered for admission even if you are not able to demonstrate traditional entry requirements. Whilst requirements for entry are specified in the University's general entrance requirements, systems to measure the study potential of applicants in the absence of conventional indicators (such as examination results) are in place. The University is committed to widening participation and many of its students are drawn from the local community from families with little previous experience of higher education. The University recognises that widening participation in higher education does not only impact on admission processes, but also on the kind of provision which must be made available to support our students. Skills have become a central feature in education and in employment.

Michael Lewis has compiled a fine collection of papers that enable us to better understand the Lexical Approach. The collection of articles written by teachers and researchers provides an accessible introduction for those new to the approach, and they provide guidance for those seeking to enhance their understanding and classroom implementation of the approach. The Lexical Approach puts vocabulary acquisition in a central role in language acquisition and this collection skillfully presents the arguments for this role and the practical applications that realize this more important role. During the 1990s interest in vocabulary teaching and research increased. Paul Nation's (1990) Teaching and Learning Vocabulary appeared at the beginning of the decade and proved influential in its inclusive review of research on vocabulary while providing pedagogical guidance through interpreting the research in terms of classroom applications. Mr. J. H. Kim: A Complete Biography Mr. J.H. Kim was born and raised in Korea. His father, Mr. Jwah Kyum Kim, was a military officer who later became a diplomat and a cabinet member in the Korean government. Mr. Kim's father served as the head of the Economic Mission to Vietnam and as the first Korean ambassador to Indonesia. He later returned to Korea and became a cabinet minister in charge of political affairs. Although the elder Kim passed away in 1985, his presence is felt at our school, as it is he who with his son, Mr. J.H. Kim inspired and formulated the school tenets we abide by today: " Improvement of Mind and Body ," " Ethical Self-Conduct " and " Unity Among Members (People)." Mr. Kim was exposed to martial arts at home at an early age. Not only was Mr. Kim's father a Gumdo (sword arts) expert, he also had the influence of his uncle a black belt in Taekwon-do who lived in the Kim household. Studying martial arts became an even more important part of Mr. Kim's life when his parents had to move to Vietnam, leaving their 11-year-old son behind in Korea. During that time, Mr. Kim practiced various martial arts, including Hapkido and boxing, but Taekwon-do remained the primary focus of his martial arts training.

WHAT EINSTEIN SAID THAT WE DID NOT HEAR
Members of the ICSU General Assembly and invited guests, it is an honor to participate in these opening ceremonies. It is an honor, also, for the United States to host this 25th General Assembly meeting. As I look out across this representation from so many of the world's nations, I am reminded of the comment of the American Secretary of State, Dean Rusk. He said, "The world is round. Only one-third of its people are asleep at any one time. The other two-thirds are awake and causing mischief somewhere." Although we are among the two-thirds who are awake, at least at the outset of my talk, I'm not sure one could characterize this assemblage as a group of mischief makers. I might instead characterize you collectively as a group of "magic makers." After all, science has been the driving force behind most of what the world thinks of as "having magical proportions"instant global communication, organ transplants, space travel, and oh, so much more. The noted science fiction writer, Arthur C. Clarke, stated it more concisely when he said, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Each of you, in your own field, contributes to that process and progress. I very much regret not being able to attend your all day symposium on "Science and Human Goals In The 21st Century". I am in complete agreement with its theme and objective. As a matter of fact, my comments tonight are, I believe, an extension of those very thoughts.

The Doctor as Teacher September 1999 Introduction
  • In our Recommendations on the Training of Specialists, we acknowledge that the example of the teacher is the most powerful influence upon the standards of conduct and practice of every trainee, whether medical student or junior doctor. Our recommendations about the pre-registration year, The New Doctor and about training at senior house officer grade, The Early Years discuss in some detail the arrangements that should be made for the supervision of new medical graduates and those in the early stages of training for specialist practice. The guidance in this pamphlet supplements that in our recommendations about general clinical and general professional/basic specialist training. It sets out our expectations of those who provide a role model by acting as clinical or educational supervisors to junior colleagues, and of the bodies under whose auspices this task is undertaken. The guidance applies equally to those who supervise medical students, as they begin to acquire the professional attitudes, skills and knowledge they will need as doctors.

CORNYN ANNOUNCES ATTORNEY GENERAL'S SCHOOL VIOLENCE PREVENTION TASK FORCE
State legislators, education, and law enforcement officials join AG in effort to prevent school violence
AUSTIN - Texas Attorney General John Cornyn and Education Commissioner Mike Moses today announced the formation of The Attorney General's School Violence Prevention task force comprised of state lawmakers, educators, law enforcement officials, and parents. The task force is charged with creating a series of recommendations so local school officials and parents can recognize the warning signs before students become violent. Members will also discuss ways school officials can respond effectively when violent acts occur in Texas schools. "I have formed the Attorney General's School Violence Prevention Task Force in cooperation with Mike Moses to bring together the best Texas resources in education and law enforcement," said Attorney General Cornyn. "Our challenge is not simply to have a crisis plan in place for every school district in Texas but to develop plans and programs that can prevent school violence," Cornyn added. "I have included parents and community leaders on my task force because children shouldn't hear the anti-school violence message from educators and law enforcement officials alone. That message needs to also come from parents, neighbors and our churches," said Attorney General Cornyn.
