    RIO DULCE, GUATEMALA, CENTRAL AMERICA
Rio Dulce means "sweet river" in Spanish and it is aptly named. The waters of the Rio Dulce are fresh, clean and clear. There is no heavy industry anywhere along the system of rivers and lakes that make up the Rio Dulce so there is very little pollution. Rio Dulce Area Map
    Lago Izabal Map

    El Golfete Map
The several geographic areas of the Rio Dulce and surrounding area discussed below are:
    Fronteras / El Relleno Area

Lago Izabal Area (to the west)

    The Peten (to the north)

El Golfete Area (to the east)
    ...
Morales / Bananera (to the south)
    FRONTERAS / EL RELLENO AREA
The two towns of Fronteras and El Relleno are the center of activity and business on the Rio Dulce. The towns are located on opposite sides of the river at the point where the highway to the Peten crosses over the Rio Dulce via a modern 85 foot tall concrete and steel bridge. El Relleno is on the south bank of the river and Fronteras on the north bank. Many people refer to the twin towns together as "Rio Dulce". Fronteras and El Relleno are fairly coarse, rough-and-tumble towns catering mainly to the truck drivers that pass through on their way to the Peten. Along the highway there are numerous small stores (tiendas), food stalls and diners (comedores) and a number of inexpensive hotels.

The Geography and Environment of Guatemala Guatemala is situated at the northern end of the Central American Isthmus (the narrow strip of land connecting North and South America) and has a total land area of 108,890 square kilometers (42,042 sq mi). Land borders (1,687 km in all) are shared with Belize (266 km), El Salvador (203 km), Honduras (256 km), and Mexico (962 km). Guatemala also has 400 km of coastline with access to both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. A large portion of the terrain consists of rugged mountains interspersed with high altitude plains. Two major mountain ranges dominate the highlands. The Sierra Madre was formed relatively recently in geological time, and is marked by no less than 37 volcanoes (including 3 that are currently active) which form a portion of the Pacific Ring of Fire. The more ancient Cuchumatanes mountain range is characterized by softer features and the absence of volcanoes. A narrow coastal plain (on the Pacific or west side) provides a marked contrast to the cool highlands. Rich soils and warm tropical temperatures are perfect for growing coffee, sugar cane, and cotton. A rolling limestone plateau (northern and eastern parts of the country) is covered by thick tropical jungle and dotted with the ruins of dozens of ancient Mayan cities. A few small sierras punctuate the landscape in the east. Tectonic plate shifts account for sporadic violent earthquakes and significant volcanic eruptions. Most of this activity affects the highlands and the Pacific plain. In 1976 an earthquake of great proportion struck the Antigua and Chimaltenango areas resulting in major loss of life and significant property damages. In 1902 Santa Maria Volcano erupted on the southwestern flank sending a massive cloud of hot ash into the air. Fortunately large urban areas were not heavily affected.
