The QUETZAL:
A male Quetzal at rest (see the tail) and in flight
The Quetzal is a bird which is found in the montane rain forests of Central America. The future of the Quetzal is certain extinction, unless something is done now to protect its habitat.
Worth mentioning is the description of a Quetzal by Roger Tory Peterson and Edward Chalif in their FIELD GUIDE TO THE BIRDS OF MEXICO. "The most spectacular bird in the New World." The male is "intense emerald and golden green with red belly and white undertail" The body measures about fifteen inches but the tail, rich in iridescent blues and greens above and subtle white below, can extend as much as thirty inches. "
To watch this bird fly with its tail undulating behind is to understand why it is called the Resplendent Quetzal. The Quetzal is also the most sacred symbol of the highly advanced Mesoamerican civilization, the Mayas, whose descendants are eighty percent of the present day inhabitants of Guatemala and the neighboring Mexican states of Yucatan, Quintano Roo, and Chiapas. To the ancient Mayas the Quetzal symbolized freedom and wealth. Freedom, because a Quetzal will die in captivity; wealth, because the Mayas were traders, and quetzal feathers along with jade were their most sought after treasures. These were traded by the Mayas as far north as the central valley of Mexico and as far south as the Empire of the Incas (over three thousand miles) an area that is about eight times the size of their home territory.

Gay Pride 2000, Guatemala. Guatemala Making An Oasis
In A Culture of Violence by Ana Simo OCTOBER 23, 2000 The metaphorical punishment of the presumably genocidal general with anal sex translates into very real violence against anyone perceived as queer. This summer, in two separate incidents, two male "transvestite" sex workers, Astrid La Fontaine and Beverly Lineth, were murdered in front of witnesses. The Guatemalan police, which routinely terrorizes "transvestite" sex workers, is not interested in investigating the murders. In Guatemala, as elsewhere in Central America, male "transvestite" prostitution is huge, often a consequence of the prostitute's abject poverty and homo-shame, and the john's rabid homophobia. Males who foam at the mouth when asked if they're gay, nevertheless think it's okay to have sex with a male cross-dresser or a transgender woman: after all, only the "receiver" is a dirty homo.

Bustling city-states grew, and trading networks covered large areas of what is now Central America and Mexico. By AD 250, the Early Classic Period, great temple cities of pyramids and plazas rose in the Guatemalan highlands. In addition to the notable architecture, the Maya also developed a complex calendar, a hieroglyphic writing system, and an impressive body of scientific knowledge. The Maya civilization was already somewhat fragmented when Europeans arrived in the early 1500's, and the weak and divided Maya were easily conquered by the Spaniards. By 1528 Pedro de Alvarado had established Spanish rule over the region, and those of native blood descended to the bottom of the new social hierarchy. The lands were carved up into large estates and the people ruthlessly exploited by the new landowners.

WHERE THESE STORIES COME FROM These animal stories are from Tales and Legends of the Q'anjob'al Maya There may be as many as 10,000 Q'anjob'al Maya, descendants of those who built the greatest ancient civilization of Central America, scattered throughout the United States and Canada, especially in Southern California and Florida, refugees from the terror in Guatemala. who is a principal figure in Yax:Te' Press says: "I collected these tales from my friend don Pedro Miguel Say, a Q'anjob'al Maya from Guatemala, who presently resides in Los Angeles. You might say he's an elder, although we are the same age, 70. Young people simply do not know the stories, or at least are not able to tell them. I translated the tales from Q'anjob'al Maya into Spanish and English. A trilingual edition of the tales was first published by the Mayan self-help organization IXIM in Los Angeles, but this volume has long been out of print. I am now planning to get out a bilingual (Q'anjob'al-Spanish) edition for distribution primarily in Guatemala and in the refugee camps in Mexico, and have several other such collections in the works. By Celina Zubieta, IPS, 10 March 1999. Nearly one-third of the 11.6 million people of Guatemala cannot read or write, mostly women and people living in rural areas. The peace accords signed with guerrillas in 1996 established goals for the reduction of illiteracy, a 50 percent increase in spending for education by the year 2000, established mandatory primary education for the first three grades, and bi-lingual education in rural areas.

With the 1996 Peace Accords, the Mayan culture was, for the first time, given the space and opportunity to outwardly express itself. Since then, Ak' Tenamit and the local communities have emphasized the culture as the axis for the development process in the region, recognizing that an accepted and sustainable development can only take place within the cultural frames of the Q'eqchi' people. At Ak' Tenamit, an experienced Mayan priest works full-time directing activities such as spiritual reflections and cultural workshops, organizing services and supporting both the students and the adults in their understanding of the culture. Community ceremonies with candles and incense take place on religious days of the Mayan calendar (which also work as the guiding calendar within the project). Based on the lunar cycle, it dictates planting and harvesting times, and special activities. An elevated sacred ceremonial site has been consecrated and will serve as the first Mayan Temple built by Mayans in 500 years. As part of their

CULTURAL IMMERSION In addition to formal studies, we provide daily cultural activities, such as trips, conferences, and recreational outings, scheduled outside of class time. We frequently visit nearby villages, markets, and public facilities and take advantage of the area’s hot springs and natural saunas. On weekends we take longer trips to climb volcanoes, explore more distant villages, see some of the beautiful resorts in Guatemala and visit farms. During field trips we visit homes, schools, and radio stations, giving students glimpses of everyday life in Guatemala not easily accessible to tourists. Each week a trip is scheduled to see one of the projects of ICAmigos, the Non-Governmental Organization sponsored by I.C.A. (Click here for a sample schedule of cultural activities) A highlight of our cultural program is weekly conferences or films. These give our students the opportunity to learn more about Guatemala’s current political and social climate. We bring in experts on such issues as women’s rights, street children, the aftereffects of Guatemala’s civil war, and the various Mayan cultures in Guatemala.

A Culture Unraveling: Matthew Looper On Guatemala’s Vanishing Textile Arts
Woman weaving on a backstrap loom in Concepción,
Chiquirichapa, Guatemala. (photo Matthew Looper) E.M. Forster once wrote that art makes us feel small in the right way, and anyone who has ever studied the dazzling hues and intricate patterns of a Guatemalan textile surely knows what he meant. Even the simplest zig-zag designs practically pulsate, the colors are so intensely rich, and the more complicated patterns featuring birds and animals truly thrill the eye. For Chico State art professor Matthew Looper, in 1993 a young graduate student newly arrived in Guatemala to document carved monuments, the textiles were a revelation. "I was totally amazed by them," he said, "and began collecting them immediately." Looper came to this passion by a rather circuitous route. "My dad and my brothers were all science people," he said during a recent interview, "and I assumed I'd be a science person too. At Duke, my specialty was molecular biology. But my sister was really interested in French and took art history classes, and to be able to talk to her I took some humanities and art classes." Once the art door opened for him, it never closed. Though he graduated Phi Beta Kappa in botany, course work in pre-Columbian art, begun at Duke, drew him to the University of Texas at Austin for graduate studies. There he came under the compelling influence of the famous Mayanist Linda Schele, one of the first researchers to launch a serious investigation of Mayan glyphs and what they revealed about the culture and history of the people who carved them. Looper earned a Fulbright as well as a National Science Foundation grant to travel to Quiriguá, Guatemala, to do "a comprehensive political history" of the site, but his attraction to indigenous textiles, kindled as soon as he arrived, meant that he began investigating their origins and history as well.

From Tikal to the Altiplano: Ancient and Modern Mayan Cultures in Guatemala
11/12/2000 by Jean-Philippe Soule Due to its natural and cultural diversity Central America is experiencing a surge in eco-tourism. Belize with its barrier reef and Honduras with its Bay Islands attract divers from around the world. Birdwatchers and sea turtles lovers flock to Costa Rica and Panama. Guatemala, although as rich in natural diversity as its neighbors, is best known as the heart of the Mayan culture and history. Tikal aroused my curiosity, which led me from one book or magazine to another and into numerous conversations with local scholars I met during my subsequent travels. My main interest became the Indigenous cultures. Over fifty percent of the population is comprised of Indigenous groups, descendents of the Mayans. Yet I realized that, apart from the attention brought by Nobel Prize winner Rigoberta Menchu about human rights violations, the modern Indigenous communities of Guatemala remain isolated in remote valleys of the Altiplano. Few have become tourist destinations and the rest are seldom visited and talked about. A brief introduction to their history will reveal the magnitude of their cultural heritage. A look at the recent past will show the hardships these people have overcome.

The World of the Ancient Maya
by John S. Henderson ***Luke's Pick
From reviews of the first edition: "A superb panoramic view of the entire history and extent of Maya culture. . . . This book . . . could be taken as a model of its kind"Art Book Review "The best full-length, up-to-date overview of Maya archaeology available today."Choice Since it was first published in 1981, The World of the Ancient Maya has established itself as an extraordinarily accomplishedcomprehensive, elegantly written, and conciseintroduction to the rich Maya culture. In this edition, John S. Henderson has thoroughly revised the text and added a wealth of new photographs and drawings. Henderson explores the entire Maya cultural tradition, from the earliest traces of settlement through the period of the Spanish conquest in the sixteenth century. The ancient Mayas were the only fully literate pre-Columbian people in the Americas, and Henderson incorporates deciphered Maya texts in his reconstruction of ancient Maya societies. Superb scientists, the Mayas developed a very sophisticated mathematics and an intricate and accurate calendar system. Theirs was one of the few complex societies to emerge in and to adapt successfully to a tropical forest environment. Their architecture, sculpture, and painting were sophisticated and compellingly beautiful.
