Culture
Guatemala's many Mayan ruins and colonial buildings are its most impressive architectural attributes. One of the most intriguing cultural aspects is the infinite and exotic variety of the handmade, traditional clothing of Guatemala's Maya population. The design of the women's colorfully embroidered tunics, capes and skirts dates back to precolonial days. Certain details of garment and design identify the wearer's group and village, and can also have multiple religious or magical meanings. Music and traditional dance also feature in many Mayan religious festivals. Spanish is the most commonly spoken language in Guatemala, and Roman Catholicism is the principal religion. Evangelical and Pentecostal Christian denominations have gained wide followings, while the Maya have preserved aspects of their traditional religions, often blended with Catholicism. Guatemalan cuisine can't compete with that of Mexico, although standard Mexican fare such as tortillas and tacos can be found. Mostly you'll encounter tough grilled or fried meat, meat and more meat. Beans and rice are often the cheapest and best alternative, and the country has a surprising number of Chinese restaurants. Coffee is available everywhere - sometimes spectacularly good, but the best beans are typically exported. Beer is prevalent, in light and dark versions, and rum and Quetzalteca are the nation's favored rocket fuels.

Guatemalan Culture And History: A Brief Survey mestizo (known in Guatemala as ladino Guatemala is the most western of the Central American states, bounded on the west and north by Mexico, on the east by Belize and the Gulf of Honduras, on the southeast by Honduras and El Salvador, and on the south by the Pacific Ocean. Its total area of 108,889 sq km (42,042 (1998) sq mi) makes it the third largest nation in the region, after Nicaragua and Honduras. At its widest points, the republic stretches about 430 km (270 mi) east to west and 450 km (280 mi) north to south. A woman in traditional Maya dress sells fruits and vegetables at a village market in Guatemala. About half of Guatemala's population is of Maya descent, and they have retained a distinct identity, especially in rural areas. Two mountain chains traverse Guatemala from west to east, dividing the country into three major regions: the western highlands, where the mountains are located; the Pacific coast, south of the mountains; and the Petén region, north of the mountains. These areas vary in climate, elevation, and landscape, providing dramatic contrasts between dense tropical lowlands and highland peaks and valleys. A narrow, fertile plain of volcanic soil stretches along the Pacific coast. Once covered with tropical vegetation and grasslands, this area is now developed into plantations where sugar, rubber trees, and cattle are raised.

    Guatemala - Culture Overview
Guatemala's rich cultural heritage includes great contrasts. The indigenous Maya groups were never brought completely under the control of the colonial Spaniards, and so an unusually large percentage of the descendants of the Maya have been able to resist integration into the world built by the descendants of the Europeans. Some of the most intense pressure on the Indian (Mayan) communities has come from the military governments of recent years, but many have been able to resist and survive. Today there is contact and exchange between the Indian highlands and the towns of the ladinos, a group that includes whites and mestizos. Their cultures have in many ways remained separate, however, divided like the population itself.

Brief information of geography, economy, government, and culture.
    http://www.peacecorps.gov/countries/guatemala/culture.cfm
April 8, 2003 1:59 AM Geography and Climate
Guatemala is the northernmost and most populous of the Central American republics. Eleven million people live in an area about the size of Tennessee. Nearly one million Guatemalans live in the U.S. Guatemala has coastlines on the Pacific and the Caribbean, and borders Mexico, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador.
The central highlands are the most densely populated area; about two million people live in Guatemala City. Between the highlands and the Pacific lies a narrow plain. The Caribbean lowlands have fertile river valleys. The north of the country contains tropical jungles and protected biospheres.
There are two seasons: rainy from May to October, and dry from November to April. Temperatures are generally moderate, ranging from 50 to 69 degrees Fahrenheit.
Most Guatemalans are either Indian or Ladino. The Indians descend from the great Mayan civilization that lived in the region before the Spanish conquest. Ladinos are usually of mixed Spanish and Indian descent, though some are of indigenous descent who have given up the indigenous way of life.
    Economy and Government
Agriculture is the largest economic sector, accounting for about 60 percent of the work force, 25 percent of the gross domestic product, and 30 percent of exports. Wealthy farmers using the best agricultural land produce the traditional exports: coffee, bananas, cardamom, cotton, beef, and sugar. Subsistence farmers work on small plots of marginal land, mainly producing beans and corn for internal consumption. A quickly expanding non-traditional sector produces and exports non-indigenous fruits, vegetables, ornamental plants, and flowers.

refer a friend The Maya civilization was one of the grandest in the history of the world and the reason for its collapse is still shrouded in mystery. The ancient Maya occupied a vast geographic area in Central and South America from around 2000 BC until 1500 AD. The Mayan culture extended to parts of what is now Mexico, Honduras, and El Salvador, and most of Guatemala and Belize. During the Classical Period which lasted from the third to the ninth century, Maya civilization built awe-inspiring temples, pyramids and cities and formed a complex social and political order. Many of the remnants in Tikal reveal the culture of this ancient civilization. The Mayan culture excelled in many different fields, and testaments of their achievements are found throughout the area. Today descendents of the old Maya, or the Indigenous as the are locally referred to, account for more than 50% of the Guatemalan population. Their present culture is vibrant and thriving, best shown by the many traditionally dressed woman and children seen along the streets in the entire country. Weaving is one of the outstanding Maya craft, an ancient art that has survived uninterrupted for centuries and is now becoming famous all over the world. The Maya also make baskets, pottery and wood carved of animals, saints and brightly-painted toys and chests.
