http://www.majon.com/testprep/strat-gmatg.html
The field of grammar is huge and complextomes have been written on the subject. This complexity should be no surprise since grammar deals with the process of communication.
GMAT grammar tests only a small part of standard written English. Grammar can be divided into two parts: Mechanics and Usage.
Mechanics concerns punctuation, capitalization, etc. It is not tested on the GMAT nearly as often as is usage. So don't spend too much time worrying whether the comma is in the right place or whether a particular word should be capitalized.
Usage concerns how we choose our words and how we express our thoughts: in other words, are the connections between the words in a sentence logically sound, and are they expressed in a way that conforms to standard idiom? This is the part of grammar that the GMAT concentrates on. Six major categories of usage are tested:
Pronoun Errors
Subject-Verb Agreement
Misplaced Modifiers
Faulty Parallelism
Faulty Verb Tense
Faulty Idiom PRONOUN ERRORS
A pronoun is a word that stands for a noun, known as the antecedent of the pronoun. The key point for the use of pronouns is this: pronouns must agree with their antecedents in both number (singular or plural) and person (first, second, or third).
Example: Steve has yet to receive his degree.

Creative Writing It is harder to state absolute rules for creative writing, but this chapter makes general suggestions that are often true. The chapter has one section on fiction and drama, and another on poetry, but it starts with rules that apply to all forms of creative writing. GENERAL RULES. CWD : introducing dialogue. 1. Rules of grammar, usage and punctuation. ... : formatting poetry. General Rules 1. Obey the rules of grammar, usage and punctuation. Creative writers should use language inventively, but they do not have a license to ignore the basic rules of good English. Readers will be patient with a demanding stylistic technique (like stream-of-consciousness narration) as long as the rewards it offers justify the work of reading it. Hold up your end of the bargain, and help the reader wherever possible. Carelessness is not art. Back to top. CW Show : show, don't tell. Make your language concrete, not abstract; specific, not general. In the Canterbury Tales , Geoffrey Chaucer uses details as clues to character. The Knight wears a garment stained with rust from his armor; the young Oxford scholar keeps twenty volumes of Aristotle's philosophy beside his bed; the Prioress weeps when she sees a mouse caught in a trap; and the Reeve always rides last among the pilgrims. In every case Chaucer conveys an impression of the person without using any abstractions or generalizations.

Online Technical Writing:
Common Grammar, Usage, and Spelling Problems
This part of the appendix covers mostly punctuation matters:
Punctuation: Commas
Punctuation is a good example of this effort to use clearly defined rules in technical writing. In journalistic punctuation style, you punctuate according to what you feel are the needs for clarity. But this is likely to be viewed differently by different people. Therefore, punctuation style in technical writing is based on the structure of the sentence. Use a comma after all introductory elements. Any element, regardless of the length, coming before the main clause should be punctuated with a comma. (The main clause is that core part of a sentence that makes it a complete sentence; that is, it expresses a complete thought.) Here are some examples: When an atom acquires enough energy to leave its orbit , the atom is positively charged. As for the energy required to produce plastic automobile parts , the auto makers view the additional cost as justified by the savings in petroleum by a lighter car during its lifetime.

MTEL COMMUNICATION AND LITERACY TEST The most important step in studying for the communication and literacy portion of MTEL is to read the Test Information Booklet carefully and thoroughly. This guide, published by the Massachusetts Department of Education ( online ) provides examples of both correct and incorrect responses to sample test questions. By comparing the correct vs. incorrect responses and thinking critically about examples, students can gain helpful insight into the assessment criteria used by scorers of the test. Through this exercise, students can also assess their own areas of weakness in respect to test questions. The second most helpful study resource is The Official TASP Test Study Guide which is a review book designed for a basic skills test used in Texas also designed by NES. Some of the examples from the Massachusetts Test Information Booklet have also appeared in this book. This study guide provides more sample exercises. You can order this book online from Amazon.com.

The regular article index for this site is difficult for some readers to negotiate, because there are so many articles and they are listed in the index according to when they were written and posted, not according to topic.
This topical index is intended to make it easier to locate articles on the subjects you want to read about. I won't pretend that the ordering is optimal, even on this page, but I hope it will be at least somewhat easier to use than the regular article index for those who feel dismayed at the prospect of all the scrolling required to find a particular article on the other article index.

If you know of a resource or would like to contribute to this reference guide please contact us.
Electronic Press Releases
The Care and Feeding of The Press: A guide for press relations staff (or those who play them on TV
Written by Esther Schindler, for the Internet Press Guild, this article is arguably the definative online guide for dealing with journalists. Ms. Schindler explains in a no-holds-barred way how journalists feel about receiving press releases, what to include in your release and how to approach a journalist for follow-up or after a review of your product has been published.
Good Release Bad Release
This article first appeared in the electronic marketing magazine'Who's Marketing Online' and covers the differences between paper and electronic press releases and common errors in press releases. The article is most memorable for its examples of 'Good, Bad, and Awful' press release writing. Press Release Tips for PR People Andrew Kantor wrote this article while Senior Editor of Internet World in 1995. The article covers e-PR basics like knowing the name of a journalist, paying attention to publication lead time, rules about follow-up calls and the importance of sending targeted press releases about news that a magazine actually covers.
