Animal Facts
Primates
The 183 species of primate range from two-ounce mouse lemurs to 350-pound gorillas (pictured left); from solitary orang utans to group-living macaques; from sap-eating marmosets to fruit-eating gibbons. The primate order includes species of tarsiers, lemurs, and lorises, which make up the "pre-monkeys" or prosimians, and species of monkeys and apes, which are called anthropoids. Humans are also anthropoids. Most primates (especially anthropoids) share characteristics such as grasping hands and feet, increased reliance on vision, increased brain size, considerable longevity, complex social behaviors, single or twin births, and extended parental care. Despite their adaptive capabilities, most primate species are threatened or endangered due to habitat destruction. (Photo by Jessie Cohen/NZP) About 600 gorillas (Gorilla gorilla) live in zoos, and the number is slowly increasing. Unwilling to take any more of the world's largest primatesendangered and protectedfrom the wilds of Africa, zoos are working together to breed gorillas. For instance, because gorilla pairs raised together usually do not breed, zoos (including the National Zoo) have exchanged gorillas, forming new social groups in which reproduction is more likely to occur. Several baby gorillas have been born at the National Zoo since 1990.

Primates and Royal Music of Uganda
Another Land, Inc.
Click here for info Embark on a musical and wildlife adventure in Uganda. Join Nichole Smaglick in exploring the music of two tribes in Uganda, the Buganda and the Busoga. In remote villages, master musicians will teach us their driving rhythms under the jackfruit tree. Nightly, we join in their celebrations and in the mornings we are awakened by bird calls. We partake in magnificent game treks - on foot, via boat, and in 4-wheel drive vehicles - that reveal the flora and fauna of the region, chimpanzees, and a variety of other primates. And for those with the passion for wildlife encounters, gorilla tracking may be added either before or after our adventure.

Signing Primates - Sign Language Used by Animals Gorillas and Chimpanzees Use Sign Language Too Join the Discussion "Were you ever a fan of either Koko the gorilla or Washoe, another gorilla? Both were known for using sign language in the sixties and seventies. "

Your next conversation in sign language may be with someone not quite human. Since the late 60s, chimpanzees and gorillas have been learning a modified form of sign language, taught by patient humans. It all began with Washoe the chimpanzee in the sixties, followed by the gorillas Koko and Michael (now deceased). Washoe learned a little over a hundred signs, but Koko learned over 1,000 signs. Not bad for a non-human.
Washoe
Washoe's long sign language-using career has been chronicled by Roger Fouts in his book,"

Almost half the 235 primates are threatened with extinction, including mankind's closest evolutionary relative the chimpanzee. Another 20 percent are approaching threatened status, Worldwatch Institute said in a report published Thursday.
"In general, the reasons for the declines are no mystery: they all relate directly or indirectly to human actions," said the report titled "Death in the Family Tree." Fate of the Forests
It spotlights a number of "hot spots" where forest loss has resulted in high concentrations of endangered primates. These include southeast Asia, equatorial Africa, Madagascar and southeastern Brazil. "The fate of these forests will largely determine the fate of most primates, and more and more of these forests are losing their ecological integrity as they are logged, colonized and cleared for agriculture," the article said.

    WHAT IS LANGUAGE
LANGUAGE IN NON-HUMAN SPECIES INTERMEDIATE STAGES BIBLIOGRAPHY ... PRIMATES HELPING PRIMATES From Africa to Southeast Asia the worlds great apes are in danger of becoming extinct. The UN is on a mission to save these precious animals, gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees, and bonobos, from dying off. Great apes still live in 23 countries and experts working to save the last great apes in the wild are hoping to keep it that way.
Conservationists led by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) have launched a global effort to save the great apes from extinction in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. The Great Apes Survival Project (GRASP) targets 23 areas where gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees, bonobos, and other primates are near extinction as a result of war, habitat destruction, and poaching for trophies, souvenirs, and meat. It seems grotesque that the peaceful bonobos cannot escape the chaos of civil war in Congo. Pacifism happens to be the principal attribute of bonobos, very unlike their aggressive human relatives. Experts estimates that in five to ten years some of these primates will be extinct across most of their range. Not one species of primates has been lost in the past century, but now 25 species of apes, monkeys, lemurs and other primates are imperiled and may soon disappear.
Great apes are the animals most like humans.
