Texas' past dotted with rich golf history
By Shawn Nicholls , Staff Writer AUSTIN, Texas (Jan. 7, 2003) Many golf legends grew up on the fairways and greens in Texas. But four significant figures not only altered golf worldwide, but also returned to the Lone Star state to make solid contributions in all areas of the game. WOMEN'S GOLF HISTORY
Peggy Kirk Bell
Women’s golf has enjoyed a very distinguished history at Rollins College. From the time of legendary star Peggy Kirk Bell in the 1940s to the present era, Rollins has made a habit of turning out great golfers and also of ranking among the top programs in the country. Last season the Tars came up just short of claiming their eighth national championship as they finished second. The first national title came in 1948 and Rollins also claimed the championship in 1950 and 1956. Nearly twenty years would pass before the Tars claimed their next championship. The 1974 Rollins squad defeated teams from all of the top major colleges in the country to win the AIAW National Championship. The 1990s was a particularly fruitful decade for the Tars, as Rollins claimed three national championships and finished second on five other occasions. Rollins claimed back-to-back national titles in 1991 and 1992 and regained the championship in 1994. It finished second to Longwood (VA) College in 1990, 1993 and 1995 and behind only Methodist (NC) College in the inaugural NCAA Division II/III Championship in 1996. In 1999, the Tars placed second to Florida Southern. Several Tars have enjoyed individual success at the NCGA and NCAA level.

Michigan Golf History 1911-1920 (Part 2) By Art McCafferty Michigan Golfer Magazine June 21, 1999 During the years 1911-1920, the participation in golf in this country exploded. However, World War I slowed golf course construction in both Europe and the United States. Michigan mirrored the country and at the end of the decade, the golf inventory of the state totaled 63. "What is there about this game that has increased its players from the 5,000 of ten years ago to the 2,500,000 or 3,500,000 of today?" is the question. And the answer is "Try the game once." Read an article in the New York Times in 1915. Another answer to the question, might have been the dramatic U.S. Open win of Frances Quimet over Harry Vardon and Ted Ray in 1913.

Michigan Golf History: 1941-1950 By Art McCafferty Michigan Golfer Staff Writer Golf was far from many people's minds as we began the forties. Obviously, the advent of WW II and all the massive changes it brought to our state and nation were foremost on everybody's mind. It was not until the latter part of the decade that our country started to settle down and rebuild from a war-time economy. In the golf world the war caused numerous interruptions. The British Open was not played from 1940-1945. It began again in 1946 with Sam Snead taking the honors. The U.S. Open was the U.S. Close from 1942-45 emerging from its slumber with the play of Ben Hogan, as he won the first of his four championships in 1948.

OU Woman's Golf History
Prior to the 1974-75 school year, women athletes at the University of Oklahoma participated in intercollegiate intramurals. They played womens teams from other school sin Oklahomas higher education system. The change for OU came in the summer of 1974 when the women became part of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
That would be Dowds only year as a coach for the Sooners. She turned over the reins to Joan Blumenthal, the most successful coach in OU womens golf history. Blumenthal built OU into the program that it is today.
Under Blumenthals direction, the Sooners opened their full season with a ninth place finish in the Iowa State Invitational. The Sooners closed out their first full slate with a third-place finish at the Midland Invitational.
The Sooners won their first golf tournament during the spring of 1976, and placed third in their first Big Eight Championship. Lindsey Wetzel became the first Sooner woman to take medalist honors with her win in 1976.
A year later, OU went from a third place Big Eight team to the top, winning the first of three conference championships. OU finished five strokes ahead of Oklahoma State and had two golfers place in the top six. The Sooners missed the cut at the AIAW Nationals, but Oklahoma womens golf was on the map.

REGIMENTS NARRATIVES CHRONOLOGIES ... RE-ENACTMENT Golf History Extract For those with a taste for the extraordinary in golfing history, the match between two Scots - a duke and a shoemaker - and two taunting English nobles, will give satisfaction. And not least because Scotland won.
Played over the old Leith Links in 1680, it was probably the first international game between the two countries. The young Scottish duke was, of course, the golf-struck Duke of York, later to become James VII of Scotland and II of England, and most of Edinburgh turned out to see the match because money was at stake.
Like so many others at this time, the future king had been well smitten by the golf bug. The two English dukes teased him about his passion and an argument developed over whether golf had originated in Scotland or England. Eventually the challenge was thrown down to James, who immediately accepted and laid a wager on the result.
It was not the first or last time that a Scot, of royal blood or not, with a reputation or money to lose, has sought means to give himself an edge. And so James immediately sent out his runners to find the best golfer in Edinburgh. They returned with shoemaker John Patersone, who also made the leather golf balls used in those days.
The entire royal court turned up at the links, which was then one of Scotland's most famous golf courses, second only to St Andrews.
