Slide/CD-ROM Programs
Order slide kit - $75.00 Preview sample slides This program, designed for presentation to adolescents, addresses the medical, legal, and socioeconomic consequences of teens having sex. Based entirely on facts from reputable health and socioeconomic sources, the program reviews human reproductive anatomy, the causes and effects of sexually transmitted diseases, and the impact of teen pregnancy on the lives of the adolescent parents and baby. The program focuses on helping young people make informed decisions about risky behaviors and promotes delaying sexual activity as the right choice for teens. Each kit comes with a complete Power Point presentation on CD-ROM with 89 slides, accompanied by suggested narratives for each slide. In addition, presenter guidelines, a student handout, and a knowledge assessment test are also included. Ideally, ninety minutes are needed to present the program and to allow adequate time for questions and answers. The program can be modified if less time is available.

Culminating Performance Task
Note to the Students: Below you will find a description of the performance task that will give you the opportunity to apply what you've learned in a real-world setting. This service-learning project will provide you the rare opportunity to learn-not out of a textbook-but in the real world. Product or Performance: A completed service-learning project in which you assess needs, design a project plan that is related to a topic in your curriculum, implement the project, and reflect on and evaluate the results. THE ARTS
TOWEL VOLLEYBALL
GRADES: 7-12
I always have my eyes open for active ways to illustrate concepts such as team work, cooperation, and other ideas we explore in my communications class. This simple game is a good opener for a unit on group dynamics or a good game for theater classes to work on cooperation.
MATERIALS:
  • 2 large towels (beach towels are excellent)
  • an inflatable beach ball
  • a net of some kind
  • a bracket for placing teams
METHOD:
  • Divide class into teams of two
  • Have each group place their name on the first line of a playoff bracket, arranged so winners will play winners until one champion is determined.
  • If there is an odd number, have the extra person be an observer to look for the most effective "team players."
  • Set up a playing area. I move my class to our large foyer, have two students hold a length of adding machine tape at should level for the net, and designate out of bounds by placing trash cans or something similar.
  • Each person on a team holds two corners of the towel, creating a sling for the ball. The ball is launched and caught back and forth across the net without using hands; just the towel is used. A team wins by scoring three points. A team scores a point when the other side is unable to return the ball.
  • Play until everyone has played, or continue playing along the bracket, single-elimination style.

Learner Outcomes (life performance skills): *Critical Thinking Skills *Research Skills *Social Skills Assessment (reflecting objectives and outcomes): *Rubric for Presentations *Teacher Observations/Monitor Student Engagement Introduction (assessing and building on prior knowledge/motivating students): The students were introduced to the problem "Who is right when it comes to using the rain forest?" by teacher explanation of the goals of the unit. Also, students watched a video showing the diversity of species in the rain forest and challenges facing rain forest preservation. As a class, students completed a K-W-L chart and mapped the problem. To meet the problem, students were involved in two activities. First, each was randomly assigned an animal of the rain forest and wore identification tags. As they met other students throughout the day, they documented tally and frequency. (This data was later used in math class.) Also, students could not eat chocolate ( a rain forest product) for a day to personally experience what it would be like if rain forests no longer existed and its products unavailable.

    Setting Goals
    by Carolyn Groff, Rutgers University
January is a time when many people like to make resolutions to improve the quality of their lives. Although we make the resolutions, such as eating more nutritiously or exercising more, with good intentions, most resolutions are broken a few months later. Goal setting, however, helps us to change a behavior slowly. Plus, even if we do not achieve the exact goal, we are still successful because of the efforts we put into reaching the goal. Children can learn how to set goals for themselves at an early age. By learning about goal setting early, they are more likely to experience success later. They are also more likely to continue trying to reach goals they set for themselves.
Family History: Tell your child about how you or other family members have set and reached goals. You and your child can make a family album by writing the stories and drawing pictures or pasting photos in a journal or notebook. Your child can then take the completed album to school to share with the class.
Visit the Library: Take your child to the local public library and find books about people or fictional characters who overcame great obstacles in order to achieve a goal. Read the books together and then discuss how goals can be achieved despite the many barriers that may stand in the way.
