MAY DAY May 1
Those ancient Romans! Some people believe the ancient Romans "invented" (amongst other things) the May Pole! Like other ancient civilizations, the ancient Romans worshipped many gods and goddesses. To honor the deities of new life and flowers, legend suggests they cut down a tree, decorated it with ribbons, then danced around it. This was the beginning of the May Pole. It could be true. It would certainly be in character! The ancient Irish called this day "Beltaine". They believed that Beltaine was the day their sun gods escaped from winter darkness. No one is quite sure who originated the idea of May Day, but it might have been the ancient Egyptians! For all the ancient cultures, the coming of summer was cause for celebration. It meant food could be gathered or grown. As part of their celebration, some ancient people gathered flowers and put them on window ledges to keep out pesky fairies. Others filled baskets with gifts and greenery to give to friends and loved ones. The ancient Celts built bonfires, with nine different types of wood, then leaped over the flames for luck. In the Bavarian regions of Germany, people played tricks on each other! Yet, for all its appearance of merriment, for most ancient cultures, May Day was a very serious celebration. Many rituals were designed, not to thank, but to please and to appease the gods. It would not be until the autumn festivals, when the crops were safely harvested, that they would heave a sigh of relief.

NCSALL Home The Effects of Continuing Goal-Setting on Persistence in a Math Classroom by Pamela Meader I have been a math teacher for Portland Adult Education (PAE) in Portland, ME, for more than 15 years. For the last three years, I have been Maine's practitioner research and dissemination leader for the National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy (NCSALL). One of my responsibilities as leader was to conduct a practitioner research project that relates to one of the ten research projects being sponsored by NCSALL. I was interested in John Comings' research on learner motivation and retention (see page 1). In this research, Comings and his research team surveyed students who were successful in completing their objectives. They found that these students felt that setting goals helped them in their persistence. I decided to observe what effect continuing goal-setting in a math class would have on learner persistence.

Career Preparation Curriculum
In December of 2002 and January of 2003, Maine Career Advantage conducted a series of Career Preparation Curriculum Train-the-Trainer workshops around the state for secondary educators. Although there are no further sessions scheduled at this time, we are making the corresponding Teacher's Guide and Student Handouts available for download (below).
For more information about the curriculum materials or the workshops, contact Pauline Stevens at pstevens@kvtc.net or Wayne Boardman at wboardman@ccdme.org
If you have additional materials (worksheets, lesson plans, resources, etc.) that you would be willing to contribute, please share them with us and we will post them at this site.
Train-the Trainer Teacher's Guide and Student Handouts
The Career Preparation Curriculum Teacher's Guide presents busy educators with a quick, meaningful way to implement the Career Portfolio. The goal of the Guide is to provide clear objectives, age-appropriate lesson plans, and measurable outcomes.
Through a step-by-step process, students will compile important personal, educational, and career information and incorporate this information into the Career Portfolio. A completed portfolio enables students to showcase their acquired learning, increase their chances for quality employment and/or admission to college, and reflect achievement of the Learning Results.

Institute Launches Drug-Free Schools Curriculum Statewide
The Mississippi Institute on Drug-Free Schools, based at the University of Southern Mississippi, recently began distributing curriculum materials throughout the state. Educators who participated in the Institute s training program and all of Mississippi s 152 school districts have received the curriculum package which includes a curriculum manual, compilation of bulletin board ideas, and posters. The Institute developed the materials with funding from a two-year United States Department of Education grant. The curriculum aids are designed to help educators in kindergarten through twelfth grade classrooms teach drug use intervention and prevention strategies. Our goal is to improve drug and alcohol use education and prevention on a very broad, far-reaching level, said Dr. Margaret D. Smith, Institute director and USM professor. We hope to make it an integral, on-going part of our entire state s educational curriculum.

Coach for Learning-Success! Is your child a thinking/creating, performing, inventing, producing, or relating/inspiring person? Does he process information best through visual, auditory, kinesthetic, verbal language, or printed language means? Does she learn best in an environment that is quiet, noisy, includes music, while sitting, reclining, alone, or with others? Each child's learning styles are determined by the child's inherent strengths and weaknesses, goals and interests, and inner pace. For that reason, trying to fit every child into the same mold often leads to underachieving students and frustrated parents. In Discover Your Child's Learning Style, respected educators Mariaemma Willis and Victoria Kindle-Hodson offer a new approach to learning that can greatly enrich every child's education and future prospects. They go well beyond the conventional idea of visual/auditory/kinesthetic learning and provide a complete program for assessing a child's inner strengths, as well as a step-by-step guide for creating an atmosphere at home or school that will help encourage a child's full potential. CLN's theme pages are collections of useful Internet educational resources within a narrow curricular topic and contain links to two types of information. Students and teachers will find curricular resources (information, content...) to help them learn about this topic. In addition, there are links to instructional materials (lesson plans) which will help teachers provide instruction in this theme.

This CLN theme page has a number of links to Internet sites which bring employers and employees together. Commonly, they give job hunters space to post resumes and employers the opportunity to post job openings. Students may find these sites useful for their employer profiles and career planning resources (e.g., searching tips/suggestions, advice on improving resumes). There is at least one link to a lesson plan in which students execute a job search.
    Researching Occupations Theme Page
This CLN theme page has curricular resources and instructional materials for teachers and students interested in researching occupations. Students can find job descriptions/profiles, salaries, educational requirements, links to professional organizations for a wide range of occuations. Also, there are links to more general occupational information such as employement and labour market trends and occupational outlooks. Teachers will find a set of lesson plans for helping students to conduct this research.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT FOR DEAF AND HARD-OF-HEARING STUDENTS
    GRADES: 1-4
Just a few tricks I use to keep kids organized and to integrate language and literacy development throughout the day.
  • Have students write down their lunch order (if they have a choice) on laminated posters, using wipe-off markers/crayons. I use one poster with pictures and words to show all lunch choices and mark them with marker as to the feature of the day. The students write their name and lunch choice so that I can record them on our lunch order sheet.
  • Kids keep track of weekly center work using their own manila folders with center checklists inside. On this list appear all the possible centers available that week, space for them to write their name and the date each center assignment was completed, stars to color in to rate the center (1-3, 1 being "yuck" and 3 being "my favorite!"). I then leave a space where I can make comments about student progress, attitude towards work and areas of need. These are sent home weekly to parents, so they are kept abreast of their child's progress.
  • I use a wipe-off board to list daily schedules, including time, short phrases describing what's happening and pictures for my emergent readers. For my ADHD/behavior challenged kids, I refer to the schedule often and have them cross out what we've completed this helps them get through the day with less outbursts and to be able to complete work, knowing that recess will happen shortly!
