Unsurprisingly for a country whose land has so often been at history's crux, the moods and preoccupations of Germany's people are reflected in a rich artistic heritage: from the claustrophobic beauty of its cathedrals to classical films from the silent era of cinema, from the most influential philosophers (try Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche and Marx for starters) to some of the world's great physicists (Einstein and Planck), from the cream of classical composers (Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Handel and Wagner) to contemporary industrial-grunge music and Krautrock, from the genius of Goethe to the revolutionary theatre of Brecht, Germany has it all. The scope of German art is such that it could be the focus of an entire visit. Arguably the finest artist Germany has produced, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was a poet, dramatist, painter, scientist and philosopher. His greatest work, the drama Faust , a hot, spicy mulled wine guaranteed to take the chill away. Despite their penchant for continual improvement and modernisation, upholding cultural traditions is dear to the German heart. Many hunters still wear green, master chimney sweeps get around in pitch-black suits and top hats, some Bavarian women don the

MA Germany: Culture and Crisis
MA Germany: Culture and Crisis offers the chance to work on exciting new areas of German Studies, as well as on important established areas of research. At a time when traditional subject boundaries are increasingly being questioned the MA considers some of the aesthetic, historical, literary, philosophical and political questions that are central to the study of the humanities today via the crucial example of Germany. The courses are taught by internationally acknowledged experts in the different disciplines, and students will acquire research expertise in more than one area. MA Germany: Culture and Crisis consists of the following modules:
  • Weltliteratur Modern German Literature: Writers and Theory
A brief description of each module is available here Students will also have the option of taking one or more courses from the new interdisciplinary MA Holocaust Studies
The Staff Professor Andrew Bowie has published a number of major books on German philosophy, literature, and music, including From Romanticism to Critical Theory. The Philosophy of German Literary Theory

Language and Philosophy from Herder to Habermas Course Tutor : Professor Andrew Bowie
The Holocaust: History and Debates This course introduces students to the complex history and historiography of the Holocaust and presents this topic as one of the central events of the 20th century. The course focuses on the major topics which have dominated academic debates and public consciousness during the last decades. In the first term students encounter a chronological narrative of the major events which constitute the Holocaust. In the second term students are introduced to some of the mayor historiographical debates in the field. The course is broad in outlook and encompasses the fate of other groups persecuted by the Nazis. It will have a Europe-wide scope and situate the Holocaust in a wider historical framework. Course Tutors : Professor Peter Longerich and Dr Dan Stone
Narrative and Identity in the German Novel The course examines the way in which German writers of the past two centuries have used different forms of narrative writing as part of investigations into the problems of personal, social and national identity in the face of political and social change. After an historical overview, texts will be studied that emerged in periods of significant change or crisis (social change at the end of the 18th Century, the move from Enlightenment to Romanticism, the Unification of Germany, Modernism and the First World War, Anti-Semitism, the Second World War, the Re-Unification of Germany). The object is to analyse the strategies that fiction adopts in order to represent such moments and support or undermine the historico-political forces that bring them about

Berlin - Culture Bonn (pop. 294 300) was until 1999 the seat of government of the Federal Republic of Germany and still retains some governmental functions as Bundesstadt ("Federal City"). The "small town in Germany" (as John Le Carre saw it in 1968) attracts travellers interested in visiting the city where Ludwig van Beethoven was born and Robert Schumann died. Beethoven's home and a museum can be seen in the Bonngasse. Other sights include the Poppelsdorf Palace (with Botanical Garden), Bonn University (formerly the palace of the Prince-Elector of Cologne) and the Bundeshaus (former Parliament House). Just south of Bonn begins the romantic Middle Rhine valley with its vineyards and ruined castles. At Bonn there is a large University with nearly 40,000 students. But there are also a lot of cultural offers like an opera, some theatres and museums (the "Museumsmeile" was opened in 1993). Because the distance between Bonn and Cologne (1,000,000 inhabitants) is quite small, all the possibilities of this large city can also easily be used. Bonn may not be able to compete with the great cities of the world or even Germany, but it is a place of many attractions consisting of three once independent towns and numerous villages each with its own character and surrounded by beautiful countryside.

http://www.eurotravelling.net/germany/berlin/berlin_culture.htm
Berlin - Culture The scars and memorials of a turbulent history speckle the diverse districts of this sprawling city. A relatively young city and never a particularly beautiful one, Berlin is not a conventional sightseeing destination in the same way as, say, Rome or Paris. Few would come here just to look at churches. But this isn't to say that there's nothing to see. Berlin's fascinating history has left scars and reminders all over this huge town, while a new future on the global stage is only just beginning to take shape out of the many construction sites that currently dominate the centre - and have become a tourist attraction in them. Most of the stuff that could properly be described as omissible - either because you really ought to see it or simply because you couldn't avoid it if you tried - is in and around the Mitte district. Such historical sights include the Brandenburg Gate, the grand structures of Unter den Linden, Alexanderplatz and the remnants of the old Jewish Quarter. But this is only a small segment of this enormous, sprawling city - carved up by rivers and canals, punctuated by pockets of green and fringed with lakes and forest. During its rapid growth in the latter part of the nineteenth century, it gobbled up a number of small communities and then, in the mid-twentieth century, became two cities with a wall between them. Today the Wall is down and the small towns exist only as names on the map, but there are still big differences between one part of town and another.

Guiding Culture. There are 7.3 million foreigners among Germany's 82 million residents. In October 2000, Christian Democratic Union parliamentary leader Friedrich Merz said that foreigners living in Germany should conform to a German "Leitkultur" or guiding culture, a term that reminded some of Nazi theories of racial supremacy. Laurenz Meyer, CDU general secretary, followed and declared: "Ich bin stolz, Deutscher zu sein" (I am proud to be a German). The result was a discussion of what it means to be German, and how foreigners, especially the 2.2 million Turks in Germany, should be treated. Merz said: "We have a problem integrating some of the foreigners in Germany. And we should not exacerbate that problem by more immigration. This is why we must talk about who should be allowed to immigrate to Germany. And that should then be governed by a law on immigration and integration." Foreign minister Fischer countered that Merz is "still living in the 19th century, still believing in a German nationhood defined by blood, still resisting an immigrant culture when the fact is we have to open up for economic reasons. This idea of 'Leitkultur' today, in a post-national Europe, is completely crazy." The CDU released a position paper on immigration on November 6, 2000 that included a call for more immigration and for foreigners to conform to a German Leitkultur: "The question now is not 'Immigration: yes, or no?' but 'Immigration: as unregulated as before or regulated and limited?" This historic change of position for a party that previously said "Germany is not a land of immigration" was overshadowed by the Leitkultur issue. For more information: (www.cdu.de/).
