http://depts.washington.edu/medgen/training/general.html
The University of Washington Medical Genetics Training Program offers postdoctoral fellowships to individuals with the MD or MD/PhD degree. The program is designed to train individuals for academic careers in human and medical genetics. The philosophy of the program is to use the most advanced concepts and techniques of genetics and cellular/molecular biology in the elucidation of problems in human and medical genetics. Research as well as clinical competence is stressed. Research activities span a wide spectrum of topics in basic and clinical human genetics. Training is usually undertaken for a three-year period. The first year is supported by the UW residency program while years 2 and 3 are supported by NIH. Trainees are expected to choose a research mentor soon after they start training in the program. The first year is divided between clinical and research activities while the subsequent years are devoted principally to research. The training faculty belongs to seven departments of the University of Washington ( Medicine Pediatrics Genetics Pathology ... Molecular Biotechnology ) and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center

The Department of Molecular and Medical Genetics
The Department of Molecular and Medical Genetics became an independent graduate department in the University of Toronto School of Graduate Studies in July of 1990. The Department was founded two decades earlier and its graduate program was administered as a semi-autonomous program in the Medical Biophysics Department. The Department's major strength is the vast breadth of world-class research programs in areas ranging from microbial genetics all the way to human genetic disease. Our faculty members have made widely recognized contributions in the areas of gene cloning technology, the cloning of Duchenne muscular dystrophy and cystic fibrosis genes, and have been the recipients of numerous national and international awards. Of the prestigious Howard Hughes awards made to fourteen Canadian scientists in 1997, six were to members of Molecular and Medical Genetics. Graduates from our programs regularly gain post-doctoral positions in prestigious laboratories and staff positions in major universities, research institutes and industry. Research Interests of the Department The research interests of the Department may be grouped into four broad programmatic themes. These are:

Unique features of bacterial genetics
  • Single genome per cell
  • Enormous numbers of offspring; even the most improbable events can occur at significant rates
  • Genome can be sequenced in reasonable time
Terminology
Mutation and mutation rate
  • mutation = heritable change in DNA (or RNA for RNA viruses)
  • can come about as a result of single base change, multiple base changes, even addition or deletion of large amounts of DNA
  • effects of a mutation range from being
  • undetectable (e.g., base change leads to a same amino acid being specified, or slightly different amino acid with no effect on protein structure or activity)
  • slight (e.g., amino acid substitution leads to altered protein, slight change in active site)

ABMG Administrative Office

FAX: (301) 571-1895 The American Board of Medical Genetics certifies individuals and accredits training programs in the field of human genetics. The establishment of the American Board of Medical Genetics evolved out of a recognized need and commitment by the founding members to improve the level and standards of clinical care in the area of medical genetics, both for the care giver and the institutions providing care. It was also apparent that within this rapidly-expanding field, specific areas of expertise were emerging, all equally important components of the clinical genetics health care delivery system. Thus, a twelve-member Board of Directors was founded consisting of human geneticists representing expertise in the areas of clinical genetics, medical genetics, laboratory genetics (including clinical cytogenetics, clinical biochemical and clinical molecular genetics) and genetic counseling. To reinforce its commitment to quality care at the individual level, the Board, with the assistance of the National Board of Medical Examiners, instituted certifying examinations in these areas of expertise. These certifying examinations are offered every three years. Because the technology of medical genetics is advancing so rapidly, test questions must be thoroughly reviewed and rewritten each time to be sure that the geneticists who take the exams are thoroughly up-to-date in a fast-moving field. In order to be eligible to sit for the examination, the candidate must have successfully completed a minimum of two years in an ABMG-accredited training program. Beginning with the 1999 examination, individuals who want to sit for clinical genetics and a laboratory specialty must complete a minimum of three years in an ABMG- or ACGME accredited training program (see certification requirements).
