CHROMOSOME 1 INFORMATION FOR THE PUBLIC
We sometimes receive requests from individuals with a family member who has a disorder specifically involving chromosome 1. These are usually partial chromosome 1 deletions or translocations. These individuals are often seeking support and information regarding potential prognosis, or may be looking for experts in chromosome abnormalities on chromosome 1. Because most of these disorders are very rare, we are not aware of any chromosome 1 deletion-specific experts or support groups. However, some of the groups and sources listed below may be helpful for further information.
Support and Advocacy Groups
The Alliance of Genetic Support Groups
The Alliance of Genetic Support Groups is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping individuals and families who have genetic disorders.
The Chromosome Deletion Outreach
A list of support groups and contact information for affected individuals and families of affected individuals with Chromosome Deletions,Duplications,Ring Chromosomes,Inversions,Translocations.
National Organization for Rare Disorders
The National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) is a unique federation of voluntary health organizations dedicated to helping people with rare "orphan" diseases and assisting the organizations that serve them. NORD is committed to the identification, treatment, and cure of rare disorders through programs of education, advocacy, research, and service.

On behalf of the ASHG Program Committee and the Board of Directors I welcome you to the Society’s 52nd annual meeting in Baltimore, Maryland. I attended my first ASHG meeting as a medical student in 1978, and attended the annual meetings for twenty years, never knowing how my abstracts were evaluated, or how the program was put together. It was only when I joined the Program Committee in 1999 that I began to understand the enormous complexity of designing the program, and the many efforts of many people who try to improve the scientific content each year. Planning for the Baltimore meeting began even prior to the 2001 meeting in San Diego. The location of the meeting was chosen approximately ten years earlier. About a year prior to the meeting, solicitation began for the invited sessions, with review and final selection in January. The Program Committee consists of 14 appointed members, who represent expertise in each of the 17 topics that are presented at the annual meeting. The 17 topics are as follows: Genetic Counseling and Genetic Education; Genetic Services and Tests, Genetic Screening, and Public Policy; Molecular Basis of Disorders with Complex Inheritance; Cancer Genetics; Genomics; Clinical Genetics, Malformations and Dysmorphology; Inborn Errors of Metabolism and Biochemical Genetics; Therapy for Genetic Disorders; Molecular Basis of Mendelian Disorders; Gene Structure and Function; Linkage Mapping and Polymorphisms; Cytogenetics; Cancer Cytogenetics; Genetic Epidemiology and Population Genetics; Prenatal and Perinatal Genetics; Development; and Statistical Genetics and Genetic Epidemiology.

(Windows only) With this excellent genetics introduction, a series of experiments in an electronic laboratory may be executed quickly and easily! Students will perform a variety of monohybrid and dihybrid crosses, gaining the true advantages of the scientific method. They may change tactics along the way and repeat the experiments until the desired results are achieved. GENETIC ENGINEERING Learn about the remarkable ability to manipulate DNA and transfer genes between different organisms. A graphic examination of procedures for transferring a human insulin gene to bacteria guides students into a thorough understanding of the techniques of gene manipulation and transfer. Topics include: (A) DNA Composition and its Function as Genetic Material, (B) The Use of Natural Variation in Genes for Selective Breeding, (C) Changes in Genes Through Mutation, (D) A step by step Guide Through the Experimental Process of Genetic Engineering, (E) Examples of Modern Genetic Engineering in Microbes, Plants and Animals, (F) The Applications of Genetic Engineering in Medicine and Gene Therapy.

The second set is devoted to various "losses" in our lives, other than death, that involve varying degrees of grief, called "Loss Links." The third set is comprised of links to Memorials collections. INTRODUCTION
This site is dedicated to all my fellow traveller's, both past and present, along the road of grief and bereavement. Grief is an equal-opportunity affliction. No one is immune from its caress. I've included "loss" as well because there are griefs associated with other things besides death. These losses and griefs include trauma and stress as well as the changes in our lives such as puberty, graduation, marriage, new job, lost job, new baby, moving, divorce and so on. It is my hope to provide a place where the issues of grief, grieving, transition, recovery and healing are addressed. Resources for ministers, police, EMS personnel, doctors, nurses, counsellors, and other professionals are provided.
