43. Traveling In French Polynesia
for the way its people sing—their purposefully atonal sound is perhaps one of thelast vestiges of precontact religion and culture left in french polynesia.

Traveling in French Polynesia WHERE VACATION MEETS ADVENTURE by Robert F. Kay Choosing where to go in French Polynesia is akin to perusing the menu at a five-star restaurant. There are so many places to visit, it’s really a tough call. Each of the five major island groups has its own distinctive attractions. The main thing is to get out of Papeete and either spend time in one of Tahiti’s outer districts or visit one of the outer islands. Only in Tahiti’s countryside or on an outer island are you likely to experience the pace and hospitality of genuine French Polynesia. My personal favorites in the Society Group (which includes the Windward and Leeward Islands) are Moorea, Huahine and Maupiti. If you can, you should also make a point of visiting at least one island in the Tuamotu Group so that you can experience an atoll, which is entirely different from a high island. Among these islands you might consider one of the lesser visited atolls such as Tikehau, Takaroa, Mataiva or Fakarava. If you have the time and the budget, at least one of the Marquesas Islands should also be on your itinerary. Remote and seldom visited by tourists, their precipitous terrain is absolutely spectacular. I like Nuku Hiva, but any island in the Marquesas Group is worth seeing. Society Group Because of its proximity to Tahiti, Moorea has become a “suburb” of Papeete. The island is dramatically beautiful, with sharp serrated peaks that command deep cleft valleys. The pace is slower than Tahiti, it’s less congested with cars, and it has an abundance of good beaches—many more than Tahiti.

http://www.gototahiti.com/discover/overview/culture.htm
Tahitian culture is a lively fusion of ancient Polynesian lore and European contemporaneousness. The mixture of Polynesian and French cultures has resulted in a fertile culinary environment. There is a variety of splendid foods available in Tahiti ranging from traditional Tahitian fare to fine French cuisine, and tempting combinations thereof. The Tahitian diet consists mostly of fish, shellfish, breadfruit, taro, cassava, pork, yams, chickan, rice and coconut. Visitors will also find any number of Italian, Vietnamese and Chinese restaurants of various price categories and quality. For Americans accustomed to fast-food, Papeete and some of the outer islands serve hamburgers, steaks, fries and similar staples. In terms of art and culture, upper-class Tahitians have adopted western pop culture. French Polynesians wear the most chic fashions, listen to the latest pop music and drive the latest Bavarian cars and Japanese automobiles. Yet despite this obvious affection for Western style, the proud people of French Polynesia still have their own language and customs. The area has inspired a host of legendary artistic works. Tahiti has captured the imagination of European intellectuals and artists ever since Rousseau waxed about the "Noble Savage." French Polynesia was the setting for Herman Melville's groundbreaking book, "Typee," which was the first novel about a romance between a white man and a Polynesian native. The region was also the inspiration for the popular theatre production, "Bali Hai."

Radisson Seven Seas Cruises’ Paul Gauguin was built to "bring unprecedented luxury and service to cruising in French Polynesia" while presenting "the culture and stunning beauty of Tahiti and her neighboring islands" to its guests, says the company. Judging by enthusiastic reviews, as this one, Radisson Seven Seas appears to have achieved its goal. The Paul Gauguin, named for the 19 th motus (coral sands islands) and coral reefs. Onboard ship, Gauguin features facilities and amenities designed to cater to its upscale clientele. The fitness center and spa includes everything from basic spa treatments to comprehensive six-day programs. In the area of cuisine, Gauguin offers multiple dining options, ranging from haute cuisine to casual fare. Target Passenger Accommodations Public Areas Dining Gauguin offers excellent cuisine and a variety of dining venues. The main restaurant, L’Etoile, offers seated breakfast, lunch and dinner. La Veranda is more intimate, featuring reservations-only French and Italian specialty dining at the ship’s aft. The French menu is inspired by two-star Michelin chef Jean-Pierre Vigato, owner of Paris’ Apicius restaurant. At the casual Le Grill, guests can enjoy open-air dining at breakfast, and lunch; the area is also available for reservations-only dining. All of the ship’s restaurants feature an open-seating policy. The Paul Gauguin also features 24-hour room service, with a la carte selections from the L’Etoile menu available at dinnertime. Through Gauguin’s inclusive pricing system, the cruise fare covers gratuities, stocked minibar, soft drinks, and wine with lunch and dinner. The ship also features a "country club casual" dress code, eschewing formal wear.

We were trying to plan an inexpensive yet exotic weeklong vacation and stumbled upon French Polynesia based on a travel agent's suggestion. We'd always thought it would be too expensive for anything but a special trip (say honeymoon), but surprisingly we were able to get a great package deal from San Francisco for a reasonable price and stay at a very nice hotel! The flight was only 6 hours non-stop from Oakland, which makes it about as far away as going to Hawai. Overview Moorea is part of French Polynesia, which is a territory of South Pacific islands still owned by France with Tahiti as the regional capital and most well known island. Moorea is the closest major island to Tahiti, and its striking profile can be seen from Tahiti's capital city of Papeete. French is the official language of French Polynesia. Although English is really the third language (after Tahitian) nearly anyone in a resort area or tourist service related job seemed to speak English as well.

Cyclones were infrequent in the past, but during the anomalous El Nino event in 1982-83, French Polynesia was devastated by 6 successive and exceptionally severe storms. They caused extensive damage to outer slopes, with 50%, 90% and even 100% destruction down to a depth of at least 75 metres, as on Tikehau Atoll for example. Cyclone damage to coral reefs was clearly evident in Tahiti, where the coral platform was completely abraded in parts. In 1991, cyclone Wasa damaged reefs in Moorea, Tahiti and the Leeward Islands (Bora-Bora). In 1997, Bellinghausen, Maupiti and Bora-Bora, again, were devastated by cyclones Martin and Osea.
The 1983 cyclones coincided with abnormally low barometric tides. An average drop in sea level to 20-25 cm below the norm for the Society Archipelago resulted in massive mortality among all the organisms inhabiting the shallow reef flats of Moorea, for example. Coral bleaching

After 13 years of island hopping in the Caribbean the Caribe Guy decided to head for the South Pacific. It had always been a lifetime dream for the wife of the Caribe Guy to travel to French Polynesia. Being a French teacher, the Caribe Gal wanted to seek out the islands of Tahiti Moorea , and Bora Bora . We had originally planned to venture to the Pacific in the summer of 1997 to celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary. Unfortunately due to our move to Washington Crossing we did not make it. Finally in the summer of 2000 we made our grand voyage to the Society Islands - otherwise known as French Polynesia.
With the aid of frequent flyer miles which got us between Philadelphia and Los Angeles and back for free and because we did not take a trip this past spring we were financially able to pull off this trip of a lifetime. With the tremendous help of our travel agent, Audrey Solomon , a 15 night adventure was booked (3 nights in L.A., 3 nights in Tahiti , 4 nights in Moorea , 4 nights in Bora Bora , and 1 night red eye flight.) Over this two week trip we were scheduled to be on 9 different flights. I guess you could truly call this island hopping.
