Centre for Russian Studies
The Centre for Russian Studies at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies (UCL) exists to promote research and teaching on Russia, the former USSR and the Russian Empire. The primary aim of the Centre is to create a more distinct focus within the School for cultural, historical, linguistic, literary and social sciences research into Russia, past and present, and thereby to improve the environment for joint and individual research on Russia, including interdisciplinary and comparative approaches. The Centre aims also to promote knowledge and discussion of Russia in the broader academic community and with the public at large. Its activities enhance the quality of both postgraduate and undergraduate teaching and at the same time provide a 'home' for the many SSEES research and MA students with an interest in Russia.
Activities
SSEES is the major centre for Russian studies in the UK. More than twenty full-time members of faculty language, literature and culture specialists, historians, social scientists devote all or most of their research and teaching to Russia. At the MA level, more than 60 students are taking Russian-based courses and/or writing their dissertations on a Russia-related topic and some 25 students are doing their postgraduate research on Russian and the former USSR, ranging from 17th-century priests to 20th-century poets, from Soviet cinema to post-Soviet politics. About 125 undergraduates are registered for degrees in Russian studies and combined degrees including Russian, with many more taking one or more courses with a Russian component, in particular politics, history and language. BACKGROUND: History and Demographic Characteristics Moldova's unique locality, at the perimeter of eastern and western cultures, has contributed to a long and difficult struggle against other countries and to the very difficult task for the indigenous Moldovan people to maintain their cultural and political sovereignty. During the Middle Ages, as well as in modern times, Moldova, like other principalities, carried out a policy oriented towards the maintenance and recognition of its independence, the defense of its territory, and the preservation of its frontiers. Being stategically positioned, Moldova was fought over and fragmented by the great im perial powers of Austria, Russia and Turkey for much of its history. This territory was the component part of country - Principate of Moldova from the beggining of the existence of Romanien states. One of the most glorious eras in the history of Moldova occured the reign of the government of Stefan cel Mare (Stefan the Great) between 1457 and 1504. During these years, Moldovans won brillant victories over Turks, Tartars, Hungarians, Poles and other invaders. This temporary succes, however, was no guarantee of the nation's future stability. In January 1918, following the collapse of tsarist Russian Empire, this region, comprised of part of the present territory of the Republic of Moldova and part of Ukraine, Bessarabia declared its independence from Russia when it was named the Democratic Republic of Moldova and reunited with Romania in March of 1918. The newly formed Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in the end of 1922 refused to recognize this reunification, however, and in 1924 created the Moldovian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (MASSR) in the territories to the east of the Dnestr River.

Germans from Russia Heritage Collection, North Dakota State University Libraries, Fargo, North Dakota, 2003, 246 pages, softcover
The Germans from Russia Heritage Collection is pleased to announce the publication of this landmark and important new book, An Expanded Bibliography and Reference Guide for the Former USSR's Ethnic Germans: Issues of Ethnic Autonomy, Group Repression, Cultural Assimilation, and Mass Emigration in the Twentieth Century and Beyond , by Eric J. Schmaltz, a recent Ph.D. history graduate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Almost 300 pages in length, the book is dedicated to the Germans from Russia diaspora community. The project took several years to complete and grew out of the author's dissertation at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, "Reform, Rebirth, and Regret: The Early Autonomy Movement of Ethnic Germans in the USSR, 1955-1989", and related research projects.
In the new millennium, this easy-to-read, but comprehensive, compilation should serve as a welcome and useful addition for the Germans from Russia community. In North America, it stands as the first such reference guide to come out in a generation. This study has taken advantage of the information explosion concerning the group since the end of the Cold War and the opening up of many Soviet archives. The 1990s were marked by the growth and advances in new information technologies, the breakdown of old political and ideological barriers, and the rise of the ethnic group's autonomy struggle in the former USSR and mass emigration movement to Germany.

    HISTORY of the DEPARTMENT
The Department of Mechanics and Mathematics was founded in 1961. Before separating out in the frameworks of a proper department, the training in mathematics and mechanics was offered first at the Natural Sciences Department (1959), then at the Physical Mathematical Department (1960). Since 1976, the Department of Mechanics and Mathematics has conducted training in applied mathematics as well.
The establishing of the department was dictated by the necessity to prepare highly skilled specialists able to carry out successful research for the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS) (of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR before), for the research institutes of Siberia, Far East, Kazakhstan, and republics of Middle Asia (while in the USSR). This vast eastern region of our country was short of teachers in the field of higher education and professionals for high-tech industries especially with the introduction of computer engineering techniques.
The approach chosen to achieve this aim was nontypical for its time. The University is located nearby the research institutes of the Novosibirsk Scientific Center. This has enabled the Department to involve the leading researchers of the SBRAS in teaching at the university and to carry out fundamental training of students during 3 years as well as further specializing at the university chairs in close contact with our basic research institutes where students could get practical experience and research supervision from outstanding scientists.

Collection development policy review for International History
    Introduction
The general policy for International History is to collect to research level, with the intention of as comprehensive a coverage as resources allow. Research level is defined as one where independent research with the published sources can be pursued. Exclusions and qualifications to this policy are mentioned below and in the General Policy Statement: see Principles of collection policy and Criteria for selection The policy for developing the collections in International History needs to be seen within the context of the complete acquisitions policy. The interdisciplinary nature of the social sciences and its publications means that subject boundaries cannot always be easily determined and described in isolation. Please refer particularly to International Relations Government , and Economic History Back to the top

    60. Ando Meritee's Renju History

My Renju History My name is Ando Meritee. I was born in Estonia in 1974. I began to play renju when I was 13. This photo was made in 1996, It's me on that photo. At that time, I had several other hobbies (like chess, etc.), too, but I finally chose renju to be my favourite game. Although we didn't have any high level teachers at that time, our renju group still made a pretty good progress because of our hard and intensive work.
We had an opportunity to learn from stronger Russian players' games as we got some books about game records from Russia. There were no electronic renju databases at that time. I had to make my own cardfiles about renju games and openings. There were about 7000 cards in the main file. I still have it at home although I haven't used it for last 8-9 years because it is too old-fashioned way compared to the modern opportunities of learning renju. In 1989, I took part in the first serious tournament outside Estonia. That was a big challenge for me. I remember I was in 2 dan level before that tournament. The tournament was played in Nizhny Novgorod (Russia). Although I made a good start and got 4.5 points from 5, I failed in the second part of the tournament and dropped to the 7th place. This tournament gave me lots of motivation to continue studying renju more seriously in order to make myself a better player. In 1989, there was the First World Championship played in Japan. A legendary Japanese master Shigeru Nakamura confidently won the World Champion title by winning 8 games and making one draw game. The World Class level seemed so far and unreachable for Ants and me, so we could only admire those World Championship players and learn from their games. Since there was no Internet at that time, all the information exchange was very slow. We wanted to receive the printed copy of the World Championship games very much, and when we finally got the games (faster than we expected), we were really happy and excited.
