1. The Decathlon In Olympic History - DECA, The Decathlon Association
history of the Decathlon as an olympic event, from Ancient Greece to the New Millenium. Indeed, he was the National football League's (NFL) first president.
http://www.decathlonusa.org/history.html
Sponsored by The Decathlon in Olympic History Table of Contents: The Jim Thorpe Story When King Gustav V of Sweden presented awards at the 1912 Olympic Games of Stockholm, he proclaimed to the decathlon winner, an American Indian named Jim Thorpe, as the world's top athlete. "You sir, are the world's greatest athlete." Incidentally, Jim is purported to have replied, "Thanks, King" to the Swedish monarch, a story, true or not, which itself has become part of the Thorpe saga. Ever since, the Olympic decathlon champion or world record holder has been dubbed "the World's Greatest Athlete." And rightly so, since the decathlon is the only objective test of all around athletic ability. Decathletes must contest ten separate events and have those performances tallied on a standard scoring table. The decathlon measures basic sporting ability like jumping, sprinting and throwing. Within the backdrop and rules of track and field, decathlon champions must exhibit, the 4 S's: speed, spring, strength and stamina. Since 1912 great decathlon champions like Bob Mathias, Rafer Johnson, Bruce Jenner and Daley Thompson and others have become household names. But they all owe much to the legend of Thorpe.

Olympic History: Soccer (Football)
Known everywhere outside of the United States as football, soccer is the most popular sport in the world and is played on virtually every corner of the planet. The sport was introduced in America as early as 1620, when the Pilgrims were known to play a form of soccer on the coast of Massachusetts. In 1884, The American Football Association was formed to organize the different enclaves in the eastern part of the country to maintain the uniformity of the game and to try to popularize the sport in the United States. Soon after, the United States and Canada played a game a year against each other in the late 1800s, representing the first international competition in soccer outside of Great Britain.

    Olympic History: Water Polo
In the mid-1800s, water polo was derived from England as an aquatic version of rugby football. By 1870, the London Swimming Association made a set of water polo rules for indoor swimming pools. The sport was primarily played in rivers and lakes and was in stark contrast from today's game. Water polo was more rough than rugby and players often came to the water's surface almost unconscious from long wrestling bouts underwater. It was so brutal that many colleges in the U.S. banned water polo from its campuses. When rule changes were introduced in Scotland in the 1880s, the modern game came to be, focusing more on skill than strength. As a result, the sport became more popular as it spread throughout Europe and Britain.

ANCIENT ORIGINS BEAUTIFUL GAME A MINORITY SPORT AT THE GAMES
To the pleasure of all those sports that are thoroughly swamped by football year in, year out, the beautiful game's vast popularity beyond the Olympiad has not translated to popularity within it and many a match at the Olympic Games, though not the final, is played to audiences of several hundred. In Sydney there are, however, 1.6 million tickets on sale because of the size of football stadiums compared with the venues of other sports. If sold, they would make football the most watched sport. The introduction of a women's event at the 1996 Games in Atlanta, and the fact that the title was won by the US, helped to generate a little more interest but only the stars of World Cup football could really turn the spotlight on the game when it becomes the first sport to be played at Sydney. Football is the only sport at the Games that will played outside Sydney, with matches scheduled for Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne, as well as the host city.

OLYMPIC HISTORY The Federation Internationale de Football Association (Fifa) was formed in 1904, four years after the game became the first team sport, with water polo, at the Olympiad. England won in 1900 - although technically the team was not England but Upton Park Football Club - 1908 and 1912, after which Hungary became the dominant force, winning 18 successive games on its way to the 1964 and 1968 titles. Uruguay, in 1924 and 1928, is the only other nation to have retained the title. The first women's title, in 1996, was won by the United States. The men's final is played at the Oly mpic Stadium on Saturday, September 30, while the women's final will be played at the Sydney Football Stadium on Thursday, September 28.
