I want to write an article possibly for a magazine such as The NewYorker on different paintings created as a response to flamenco dancing. I was recently in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston this past vacation and I was struck by the beauty of John Singer-Sargent's Jaleo . It is a huge painting of a flamenco dancer with seated guitarists, dancers, and a singer in the background. The size and vibrancy of the painting immediately struck me and I felt as though Singer-Sargent's painting was an excellent interpretation of original flamenco dancing. I decided that I wanted this painting to be the focus of my project. Then I decided that maybe it would be interesting to compare Singer-Sargent's work to other paintings of flamenco artists done by Spanish artists. Singer-Sargent's painting was controversial in some aspects, so I think it would be interesting to see how other Spanish artists have interpreted the flamenco in their works compared to Jaleo done by an American artist.
