Welcome to the Flamenco Page Information about Flamenco in Spain. Flamenco is an individualistic, yet structured folk art from Andalusía, Spain. It is often improvised and spontaneous, the song, dance and guitar are blended together by the passionate rhythms of southern Spain. Gypsies say it’s in the blood, but Spain’s famous poet and writer Fredrico Garcia Lorca, called flamenco one of the most gigantic inventions of the Spanish people. The tragic lyrics and tones of flamenco clearly reflect the sufferings of the gypsy people. It is thought that the gypsies who ended up in southern Spain, travelled from India and Pakistan acquiring the name "gitano" from Egiptano, the old Spanish word for Egyptian. The source of flamenco lies in its singing tradition, so the singer's role is very important. The flamenco guitar was used originally as an instrument of accompaniment. Today in Spain, solo flamenco guitar has developed as a separate art. Whilst some purists disapprove of the fashionable attempts to blend flamenco with jazz, blues, rock and pop music, it is no wonder that so many young people embrace it wholeheartedly. Apart from songs delivered from different regions such as fandangos from Huelva, Alegrias from Cadiz, there are broadly speaking two main styles in Flamenco in Spain: the "jondo" - profound and serious, the cry of people oppressed for many centuries; and the "chico" - happy, light and often humorous. The song "el cante" is most important as it is considered to be the source which gives inspiration to the guitar playing "el toque" and the dance "el baile".

The flamenco dancer performs with passion, fervor, even tortured expressions but always striving for grace and dignity. Flamenco handclapping produces a sharp, almost piercing sound. Those performers not dancing or guitar playing hold the left arm still. Its bent at the elbow with the hand about neck high and just slightly cupped. The fingers of the right hand slap the left crosswise, covering the hollow. The dancer does not begin immediately, but waits, absorbing the strumming, clapping and singing until inspired to dance. duende (DWEN-day). The word means goblin or fairy, but to the flamenco dancer it signifies an inner force that fuels an inspired performance. A dancer with duende or Flamenco blends many influences The Pyrenees Mountains running along the Spanish-French border have throughout history cut Spain off from the mainstream of European culture. But a Mediterranean coast hundreds of miles long opened the country to influences from cultures not only bordering this sea but beyond it as well.

If you've ever passed the Wilcox Dance Studio and heard the faint sounds of hammering, you probably attributed it to campus construction. However, chances are that what you heard was none other than the rhythmic footwork of Puro Flamenco, Princeton's only flamenco dance group. Last year, Puro Flamenco was founded when Julia Ioffe '05 began looking around to see if there was an interest in flamenco dancing on campus. Julia, a flamenco dancer for the past three and a half years, initially became interested in it when she and her cousin were looking for a place to learn Latin ballroom dancing. Instead of finding a place to tango, they discovered flamenco, and Julia says that she quickly "got addicted" to the fire and fury of flamenco dancing. Ioffe soon met up with Nicole Oncina '05, who has been dancing flamenco since she was ten years old. Sharing their enthusiasm for the brusque yet sensual gypsy dance, Ioffe and Oncina presented their idea of a flamenco dancing club to the Undergraduate Student Government for approval, and were thrilled when their proposal was accepted.
