Flamenco combines acoustic guitar playing, singing, chanting, dancing and staccato handclapping. The flamenco dancer performs with passion, fervor, even tortured expressions but always striving for grace and dignity.
Flamenco handclapping produces a sharp, almost piercing sound. Those performers not dancing or guitar playing hold the left arm still. Its bent at the elbow with the hand about neck high and just slightly cupped. The fingers of the right hand slap the left crosswise, covering the hollow.

Bull fighting and flamenco dancing in Spain
The history of bullfighting can be traced back to ancient days. They were popular spectacles in ancient Rome, but it was in the Iberian Peninsula that these contests were fully developed by the Moors from North Africa who overran Andalucia in AD 711. Bullfighting developed into a ritualistic occasion observed in connection with feast days, on which the conquering Moors, mounted on highly trained horses, confronted and killed the bulls. Today bullfighting is big business in Spain with the top matadores earning comparable salaries to the nation's top soccer stars and rock idols.

History of Spanish Flamenco Dancing
Flamenco is the traditional song and dance of the Gypsies (flamencos) of Andalusia in southern Spain. Developing over several centuries from Gypsy, Moorish, Andalusian, and other roots, flamenco music and dance entered polite society in the early 19th century as café entertainment. Canto (“song”) is the core of flamenco, and like baile (“dance”), it has three forms: grande or hondo (“grand” or “deep”), intense, profound songs, tragic in tone, and imbued with duende

Flamenco is a typical dance and music in the south of Spain, concretely in the Andalusian region. It was brought to Spain by gypsy people coming from Eastern Europe in the 15th century. The roots of Flamenco come from different cultures and countries such as Morocco, Egypt, and India; but the first traces of flamenco in Spain date to 1760. Among the Spanish cities with more tradition in Flamenco are Cadiz, Granada, and Sevilla.

Flamenco:
Antonio Marquez and Company By Patricia Boccadoro
PARIS, 30 April 2001
All the colours, riches and culture of Spain were concentrated on the small, intimate stage of theAmphitheatre of the Opera Bastille transformed for all too short a time into an Andalusian tavern, with an Antonio Marquez, feet stamping as if possessed , smouldering then exploding onto the floor space.
Born with the fire inside that distinguishes genius from the merely commendable, Marquez, star dancer of the National Ballet of Spain before he founded his own company in 1995, imparts rapture and gaiety to his audience. More exuberant, more of a showman than Gades or the legendary Antonio, Antonio Marquez is nonetheless a pure Flamenco dancer in the great traditional style, following the fixed rules, but mesmerising his audience by the sheer force of his personality.
Possibly the most charismatic dancer since Rudolf Nureyev, he had just the right touch of arrogance as he led his young troupe , the average age not above twenty-two or three, chosen as much for their temperament and, presumably, beauty through an excellent programme of three pieces.

Welcome to the Flamenco Page
Information about Flamenco
Flamenco is an individualistic, yet structured folk art from Andalusía, Spain. It is often improvised and spontaneous, the song, dance and guitar are blended together by the passionate rhythms of southern Spain. Gypsies say “ it’s in the blood”, but Spain’s famous poet and writer Fredrico Garcia Lorca, called flamenco one of the most gigantic inventions of the Spanish people. The tragic lyrics and tones of flamenco clearly reflect the sufferings of the gypsy people. It is thought that the gypsies who ended up in Andalucía travelled from India and Pakistan acquiring the name "gitano" from Egiptano, the old Spanish word for Egyptian. The source of flamenco lies in its singing tradition, so the singer's role is very important. The flamenco guitar was used originally as an instrument of accompaniment. Today solo flamenco guitar has developed as a separate art. Whilst some purists disapprove of the fashionable attempts to blend flamenco with jazz, blues, rock and pop music, it is no wonder that so many young people embrace it wholeheartedly. Apart from songs delivered from different regions such as fandangos from Huelva, Alegrias from Cadiz, there are broadly speaking two main styles in Flamenco: the "jondo" - profound and serious, the cry of people oppressed for many centuries; and the "chico" - happy, light and often humorous. The song "el cante" is most important as it is considered to be the source which gives inspiration to the guitar playing "el toque" and the dance "el baile".
