Learning outcomes: To help develop a greater understanding of direction, speed and relationship to movement. Equipment needed: 4 cones to mark out a grid for the activity. Age group: Suitable for ages 5 to 12 Details: Firstly, using the cones at each corner mark out a 30-yard by 30-yard grid. Position all players on a line on one side of the grid and give each player a number. Have two players (defenders) stand in the space between the line of players and the opposite line of the grid. The opposite line is described as ‘safe territory’. The defenders call a number. The player whose number they call tries to travel through the open space at the centre of the grid and reach the safe line. A player who is tagged must sit down on the spot. When the next number is called, the player can try to free any players sitting down by touching them on the way to the safe territory. A player who is freed must try and make it to the safe zone without being tagged. A more difficult and varied version of the above game is to repeat these procedures, except players on the line must attempt to reach the safety zone while dribbling a ball. If a defender touches the ball, the player must sit down.
