Camping
History Picnicking ... Natural Features
Prophetstown State Park, on the northeast edge of the city along the south bank of the Rock River in Whiteside County, is a scenic and historic area offering a variety of recreational facilities. Once the site of an American Indian village, the 53-acre park derives its name from the Native American prophet Wa-bo-kie-shiek. Prophetstown became a state park in 1947 in legislation sponsored by State Rep. George S. Brydia, who had served 10 terms as mayor of Prophetstown. Gov. William G. Stratton dedicated the park in formal ceremonies there on Sept. 18, 1953. History Wa-bo-kie-shiek (White Cloud), who was of mixed Winnebago and Sauk descent, served as an advisor to the great Sauk war chief Black Hawk. In 1831, the advancement of white settlement forced Black Hawk and his followers from the Rock Island area into Iowa, with the promise that they would not return. Black Hawk was finally chased into southern Wisconsin, with his retreat culminating in a decisive defeat of the Native Americans a few miles south of Bad Axe on Aug. 2, 1832. A few days later Black Hawk was captured and after several months captivity during which time he was taken to Washington, D.C., he was permitted to return to his people in Iowa, where he died in 1838.

74. Lake Heron
Offers primitive camping as well as fishing, hiking, boating, and other recreational activities near a 10acre stocked lake.
http://www.lakeheron.com/
Lake Heron
  • A beautiful and quiet place to get away from it all. Fish, canoe, or just relax and enjoy nature. Swim in a private spring-fed lake. Hike and enjoy the wildlife in secluded woodlands. Sit around a campfire. A great place for a picnic or family reunion.

Currently, camping is “primitive”; that is, with a pop-up camper or tents. There are no water, electric or sewer hook-ups. Camping is by reservation, for one family or group at a time. You will have exclusive privileges with no other campers in the area. There is a fire ring for a campfire and also a gas grill for cooking. Four picnic tables under a pavilion, as well as a clean and odor-free privy are available for your group.
Lake Heron is a 10-acre, spring-fed lake stocked with largemouth bass, rock bass, and bluegills. The fishing is amazing! The average bass is 12-15”. Many of the bluegills are enormous, and are a delicious pan fish. Adjacent to the Lake Heron property is PA State Game Land No. 258, which provides hundreds of acres of additional land for your enjoyment. We are eager to share our paradise in Perry County with others. We have adopted the following motto for those who visit with us at Lake Heron:

document.write(document.title); What Is This Indicator, and Why Is It Important? Americans enjoy recreation in and around water, from birdwatching and fishing to sailing and swimming. Information on trends in participation documents the demand for recreation opportunities and can be useful in planning for recreational facilities. Why Can't This Entire Indicator Be Reported at This Time? Data on national recreation participation have been collected since 1960, but earlier surveys are not compatible with the most recent, and most thorough, survey. Data from 1995 are available for the activities shown in the figure (see the core national recreation indicator ), but except for freshwater fishing, these data do not distinguish what portion of the activities took place in fresh water rather than salt water. In 1995, Americans spent a total of 886 million days fishing in fresh water. The second National Survey on Recreation and the Environment is under way, but it is not clear if it will provide all of the data needed for this indicator. There is no technical note for this indicator; the
