Learning Stalls: Lesson Plans, 2002
Mixed media sculptural kit with touch screen (DVD palettes, organics, resin, computer, software); two single channel DVDs on plasma screen Burns and Martin prepare time-lined lesson modules as the first exhibition stage of their reimagined education program, Learning Stalls . Psychological and physiological inquiry, psychic surgery and physical therapy are presented in a trans-disciplinary curriculum choreographed by other-worldly beings. The first series of lesson plans will be presented in a linear fashion and supplemented by a prototype model of their upcoming succession of "intra-media tactility kits." As artists whose work fully engages the notion of improvisation, our performative inquiries have begun a dialogue with the specific tools made accessible via the residency. After a handful of demos on Discreet's Flame software and investigating the 3D rendering program Maya, we have begun to shoot scenes specific for treatments by those tools. However, in addition to treating footage with certain effects in mind, our improvisational techniques are equally activated through learning and discovering specific properties inherent to the tools. Organic exchange, astral bodies, and enveloping nets became mixed into our per formative vocabulary due to Flame's flexibility as a tool made to work with matted and malleable transparency layers and wire frames.
