Media Type: Persuasive Essay Objectives After completing this lesson, students will be able to:
    • Give examples of how the media glamorize violence and desensitize viewers to the horrors of real acts of violence.
    • Identify factors in addition to the media that contribute to the problem of violence in society.
    • Apply the reading skill of understanding persuasive writing to an article linking acts of real violence-to-violence in the media.
Introducing the Lesson Direct students to a Web site that contains TV and movie listings for your locality for the current week. Alternatively, bring to class listings from the local newspaper. Ask one group of students to count the number of shows with violent content; a second group is to count the total number of shows broadcast during prime time (8:00 to 11:00 p.m.) for that week. Art Our original lesson plans are developed by Thirteen Ed Online Master Teachers. Starting with tried-and-true lessons that work in the classroom, our Web-savvy teachers have built Web-based activities that use the rich resources of Thirteen/WNET New York and the Internet.
Each month, we will create new lessons based upon outstanding PBS series and around outstanding Web resources.
    Appreciating the Men of Ballet
In this unique performance documentary, DANCE IN AMERICA travels home with Jose Manuel Carre–o (Cuba), Angel Corella (Spain), Vladimir Malakhov (Ukraine), and Ethan Stiefel (America), exploring the dancersÕ personal backgrounds and formal training. Viewers are treated to a work specially created for the four dancers by acclaimed choreographer Mark Morris, set to music by Robert Schumann. Using Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences to explore the behind-the-scenes glimpses of the dancers' rehearsal process and the culminating performance of the work in its entirety, this lesson helps middle school aged students appreciate the discipline, craft, and intricacies of elite male dancing in America.
    Making Movie Storyboards
PBS' film series REEL NEW YORK features the New York stories of several documentary film makers. In this lesson students try their hands at moviemaking by analyzing how images in selected movie clips are used to tell a visual story. Students collaborate to tell their own visual stories that they share in a classroom screening.

    Changing Places
In this lesson, elementary students develop an understanding of what it means to immigrate from one country and culture to another. Using various resources, including video segments from the documentary BECOMING AMERICAN: THE CHINESE EXPERIENCE Web sites, and student organizers, students examine the experiences and contributions of Chinese immigrants in the U.S. and explore their own cultural heritages. As a culminating activity, students invite guest speakers who are first- or second-generation immigrants to tell about their experiences.
    Opportunity and Danger
In this lesson, elementary students develop an understanding of the risks and rewards of immigrating to the U.S., focusing on Chinese immigrants but including other groups as well. Using various resources, including video segments from the documentary BECOMING AMERICAN: THE CHINESE EXPERIENCE, Web sites, and student organizers, students examine the treatment, often exclusionary, of Chinese immigrants in the U.S. and explore the dynamics of inclusion, exclusion, and prejudice. As a culminating activity, students interview first- or second-generation immigrants.
A Dream and an Idea: Searching for a Roadmap to Create a Country
The struggle to create a nation continues at the Constitutional Convention as the founding fathers present differing visions of governance. Conflict gives way to compromise as three branches of government with two houses of Congress emerge for a new and fragile United States. Through viewing and discussion of the FREEDOM: History of US video and investigation of the Web resources, students will develop a deeper understanding of the formation and infancy of the United States.

    Project Plan.
The plan is to take the film studio to the veteran. Given the age and health of many of these veterans, and to help facilitate the recording of these oral histories without disrupting the lives of these veterans, a camera TEAM will accompany the interviewer to locations across the western states in a sort of film studio on wheels. Film students, under the umbrella of Abbey Academy of Arts, working under the direction and supervision of seasoned film professionals, will travel to the veteran and where possible vidio-tape these unsung warriors in the comfort of this film studio at their own homes.
These student interns, trained in sound, lighting and general camera operation, will assist the California Center for Military History's interviewer in the collection of these veteran's true-life stories using state-of-the-art digital film and computer editing equipment on board this mobile film studio
Using this material, other film student interns will be expected to create and produce a number of short range multi-media film projects encompassing broadcast, non-broadcast and interactive online media for a wide range of educational activities which will provide a unique and compelling experience through media production and delivery.
Still, other assigned student interns, acting under the guidance of our TEAM of educators, will then be expected to spearhead a variety of K-14 educational initiatives to be developed in conjunction with lesson plans being developed for both online and off-line programing being developed by the California Military History Educational Project. This area of the project will draw upon the skills of these student interns majoring in journalism, photojournalism, art, history, film, media production, animation, and other related areas.
