Scottdale, PA 15683 Hours of Operation 2003 Schedule In 1800, a group of German Mennonites from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, led by Henry Overholt, crossed the Alleghenies and established a farming settlement on the fertile plains just west of the Chesnut Ridge. Henry's son, Abraham, had built a three story brick house and was the proprietor of a large gristmill and a distillery by 1838. Both businesses were located in a six story brick structure near the Overholt Homestead. The growing community, consisting of brick homes for Overholt employees, a general store, farm, and other related buildings, become known as West Overton Village. Abraham's daughter, Elizabeth, and her husband John Frick, have a son, Henry Clay Frick, born in 1849. The Frick birthplace, a small stone cottage, also served as the spring house on the Overholt farm. Although Frick only lived in the cottage during his infancy, he never lived far from his Overholt grandparents and spent a great deal of time in their company. As a young man, Frick went to work in the second distillery owned by his grandfather in Broadford, just eight miles away. While working there as a bookkeeper, Frick became interested in the coke business and eventually began building ovens to produce coke for the Pittsburgh market. By 1881, Frick was a millionaire living in Pittsburgh with his new bride, Adelaide Howard Childs.

Celebrate the Arrival of Spring at the Farm House Museum
Ames, IA – University Museums will present a spring celebration at the Farm House Museum on Sunday, May 5 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. “We at University Museums wanted to have an afternoon of celebrating the arrival of spring. The end of the semester is nearing, planting season is upon us, and before we know it, summer will be here,” states education curator Matthew DeLay. “This is our way of taking time to enjoy ourselves, just as people did in the late 19 th century. Some of the activities we have planned, such as the Maypole Dance, were practiced on the lawn at the Farm House in the late 1800s and early 1900s,” adds DeLay. This event will be filled with other period activities such as children’s games, wood turning and metalworking, wool spinning and the sowing of seeds. Ronn Ritz, of Skunk River Cycles, will be on hand to show off his Victorian era bicycles. Period refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public Maypole Dance, May Festival, Iowa State Campus, 1912.

Groot Constantia is one of the oldest wine estates in South Africa. The manor house is a magnificent example of Cape Dutch architecture and the wine museum pediment is one of the sculptor Anton Anreith's masterpieces.
The history of the farm dates back to 1685 when it was granted to its first owner, Simon van der Stel. He arrived at the Cape in 1679 to take over the post of Commander, later upgraded to that of Governor. Van der Stel was very keen to acquire a farm and in 1685 a piece of land of more than 2454 hectares was granted to him. He named it Constantia and, probably in the same year, built a double-storey house on it. Vegetables and fruit were grown on the farm, in addition to the practice of viticulture and the production of wine. The produce was supplied to ships which called at the Cape. Van der Stel also specialized in cattle-breeding on his leased land. He died in 1712. In 1716, Constantia was divided into three portions before being sold. Two parts became known as Bergvliet and Klein Constantia and the third part on which the Van der Stel house stood, became officially known as Groot Constanlia during the mid-19th century. The history of Constantia from then on became the story of mainly three families. Oloff Bergh was the second owner of the farm. After his death in 1724, his dynamic wife of slave descent Anna de Koningh, became the owner. She owned the farm until her death in 1734. Agriculture and viticulture continued on Constantia during this period.
