Farm and Folk Museums
Kirbuster Farm Museum, Birsay
The Kirbuster complex is slightly different from the Kirbuster Farm in that it is of a higher standard to the average Orkney farm of the time. Larger and better lit than its contemporaries, it was also unusual in that the animals were housed in seperate buildings. The museum includes a collection of farm implements and machinery, and a cottage garden.
Corrigall Farm Museum, Harray
This ancient farmstead includes the last surviving example of an Orkney "firehoose" with its central hearth and stone "neuk" bed. Originally dating from the mid-eighteenth century, the Corrigall farm has seen numerous changes over the years. The farm is now a working museum giving the visitor a vivid insight into the lives of the typical Orcadian farmer in days gone by. Traditional crafts, such as heather and straw work, can be seen at both sites. Opening Hours March - October Monday-Saturday
Sunday
Kirbuster Farm Museum, Birsay, Orkney

http://www.bavariaben.com/openairmuseums.html
Farm Museums in Southern Germany and Austria Throughout Germany and Austria are many open-air museums displaying typical old farms and local buildings, excellently restored for public viewing. The most famous building in the Black Forest is probably the Vogtsbauernhof - a centuries old farm that is the centerpiece of the near the village of Gutach . The Vogtsbauernhof is the only farmhouse at the museum that was not moved from another location. There are many other buildings to include mills, a bakehouse, a distillery, a chapel and blacksmith shops. Several folklore and lifestyle exhibits and at various times you can view demonstrations of all the old crafts. Seldom do I visit the Schwarzwald without a walkthru of this wonderful old Frelichtmuseum.
This Open-air Museum is located in the old town of Bad Windsheim which is about 24 km northeast of Rothenburg o.d.T . The has 60 plus original buildings representing the rural past of Franconia and is one of the largest of its type in southern Germany. Lots of farms, houses, handicraft and workshops, and mills throughout the property. We visited in June 1999 and one of my 10 yr old daughter's favorite memories was seeing a shepherd near the front gate with his flock of sheep. A worthwhile half-day trip (or less) if you are staying in or near Rothenburg for a few days.

Museum Highlights Farm museums cultivate curiosity There aren't many farms left in the Chicago area, but a number of farm museums and several working farms still let kids learn about farms and farm life, past and present. Here are some of them. Plan to spend an entire day at the Blackberry Farm's Pioneer Village . This 54-acre living history museum includes an arboretum with more than 200 varieties of trees, historical agricultural gardens, floral displays and, of course, farm buildings housing collections of farm implements, carriages and sleighs. Kids can watch demonstrations of sewing, pottery, spinning and blacksmithing in the mid-1800s. They can also ride on a hay wagon, ponies, a train and a carousel. Free catch-and-release fishing is offered at Lake Gregory, also on the grounds. Food is available in the Summer Kitchen. Visitors can also bring a picnic and eat overlooking a pond with a spraying fountain. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, from April through October. Admission is $7.50 for adults, $6.50 for children ages 2 to 12, and free for kids under 2. Discounted rates apply for Fox Valley Park District residents. 100 S. Barnes Rd., Aurora. 630/892-1550.

Acton Scott Historic Working Farm
Acton Scott is one of Britain's leading working farm museums. We specialise in practical demonstrations of historic farming using traditional skills and period horse-drawn machines. Every day you can see milking by hand and butter-making in the dairy.
There are weekly visits from the wheelwright, farrier and blacksmith. In the woodsman's hut rakes and gate hurdles are being made. In addition, our award winning craft programme offers wide ranging demonstrations
