You ride around on hover-cycles shooting enemies and collecting the coins they drop. Those coins can go towards the purchases of new weapons and powerups. So as you play, you have to decide - am I going to spend my 45 coins on these nifty axes right now? Or should I kill a few more dozens of zombies and hold out for the flamethrower? It's all about microeconomics, I guess. Some games looked almost impossibly fragile - I wondered how they could possibly have survived the onslaught of thousands of teenaged hands. The Retriever - Sports To the Xtreme: Extreme Sports, Video Games, and Girls Dan Puchala Retriever Weekly Staff Writer Video games are one of the primary forces behind the recent widespread popularity of extreme sports. How is this, you ask? Quite a number of years ago, Acclaim, a publisher that has been involved in the industry from the days of the original Nintendo, released a title called "Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater." This game was perhaps the first successful release of an extreme sports-oriented video game into a market that would inevitably latch onto the idea with quite a bit of enthusiasm. Acclaim will soon release "Tony Hawks Pro Skater 4" and I’m sure the title will sell just as well as the last three. This correlation between age and the video game industry leads to some very important conclusions and new issues to deal with as well, which directly concern college students. To start with, there is the issue of gender and its relationship to video games. Because the industry is well aware of its male audience, games that are designed for new consoles are marketed and designed for young men. This results in several things: games that portray women as sexual objects, games where only men participate in sports, and it continues the trend that the subject matter of games are designed only for men to enjoy. These are the reasons why women are increasingly criticizing video games. These are also reasons why women should criticize the direction of the gaming industry.
