Ground Water Institute for Teachers TM Ground Water Institutes for Teachers TM is an innovative and unique two-day training program that the American Ground Water Trust developed to help educators increase their understanding of ground water science and water resource issues. It has only been in the last 40 years that the nature and origins of ground water has come to be understood scientifically. Therefore, it is not surprising that there still remains much misinformation about this vital resource. Teachers with an expanded "comfort zone" about ground water are more likely to correctly and effectively teach their students about its environmental and economic value with a positive and motivating style. When teachers are inspired, their students will benefit. Since 2000, the American Ground Water Trust has held Ground Water Institutes in:

Research centers and institutes
The expansion or inauguration of institutes and centers housed in the business schools – or affiliated with these schools – that focus on social impact and environmental management issues is one of the most encouraging trends noted in the Beyond Grey Pinstripes 2001 Centers and institutes play an important role because they foster an institutionalization of the focus on these issues – which means less dependence on the individual faculty or administrators to sustain a school’s integration of social and environmental stewardship into the MBA program. Among the ways that centers and institutes contribute to this institutionalization are the following:
  • They increase visibility of the issues within the business school within and across disciplines, with other schools within the university and in the community outside the school – especially in the media and in corporations;

US Global Change Research Program
Organized in 1989 and created by the Global Change Research Act of 1990, the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP), an integrated effort of various Agencies and Organizations of the Federal Government, has been working to better understand and to deal with natural and human-induced changes in the Earth's environment. Changes in the global environment, including ozone depletion, climate change and greenhouse warming, natural variations in the climate, and land use change have the potential for inducing signficant effects on human society and the Earth's natural ecosystems. The USGCRP sponsors global change research, uses this information to project future climate conditions, and improves understanding of possible consequences of global climate change. More detailed information about the USGCRP can be found at the USGCRP Home Page

    http://www.highwaysafety.org/about.htm
    The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is a nonprofit research and communications organization funded by auto insurers. For over 30 years the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has been a leader in finding out what works and doesn't work to prevent motor vehicle crashes in the first place and reduce injuries in the crashes that still occur. The Institute's research focuses on countermeasures aimed at all three factors in motor vehicle crashes (human, vehicular, and environmental) and on interventions that can occur before, during, and after crashes to reduce losses. In 1992 the Vehicle Research Center (VRC) was opened. This center, which includes a state-of-the-art crash test facility, is the focus of most of the Institute's vehicle-related research. The Institute's affiliate organization, the Highway Loss Data Institute, gathers, processes, and publishes data on the ways in which insurance losses vary among different kinds of vehicles. A brief look at the field of highway safety
    Before the 1960s, highway safety advocates focused nearly all their efforts on preventing crashes, primarily by trying to change driver behavior. Engineering attracted some attention, but it was engineering to prevent crashes. Reducing the consequences of crashes didn't get much notice.
