Digital Storytelling enables learners to explore their world
and communicate their discoveries
Updated 10/22/02
Digital Storytelling and North Carolina's Department of Environment and Natural Resources/Office of Environmental Education have partnered to provide unique learning experiences for the participating Digital Storytelling schools. Using multimedia to share learning experiences across the state, participating Digital Storytelling schools will share projects based on the wealth of information and services the Office of Enviromental Education provides to North Carolina's K12 schools. The most dynamic example is combination of Earth/Environmental sciences workshop and Digital Storytelling's technology integration. The Earth/Environmental Science Institute is a partnership to Integrate Environmental Education into the teaching of Earth/Environmental Science in North Carolina high schools. These Summer 2002 Environmental Education Institutes were made available to high school teachers by The Environmental Education Fund established by the grant funded by the EPA. This outstanding professional development opportunity enabled teachers to conduct field studies in areas as diverse as the Great Smoky Mountains, and the coastal waters and Barrier Islands of North Carolina, while receiving outstanding professional development.

    HUMAN DIMENSIONS RESEARCH PROGRAMS
    AND GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE
Welcome to the CIESIN Thematic Guide on Human Dimensions Research Programs. In recent years the international scientific community has mobilized to improve understanding of global environmental processes. Governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental organizations are developing research programs and working groups to answer the fundamental question, "How does the earth system work?" The human dimensions, or ways that people contribute to and are impacted by global environmental change, are becoming an increasingly important element of major research efforts. Miller and Jacobson (1992) discuss the history, structure, and challenges of this area in "Research on the Human Components of Global Change." Stern, Young, and Druckman (1992) present the United States National Research Council's perspectives and recommendations for U.S. research in Global Environmental Change: Exploring the Human Dimensions . The introduction of the book is available here.
