Egypt - History
Egypt was granted titular independence on 28 February 1922. Fuad I, the reigning Sultan, became King of Egypt. He was succeeded in 1936 by his son, King Faruq (Farouk).
The Anglo-Egyptian Treaty of 1936 recognized full Egyptian sovereignty and provided for the gradual withdrawal of British troops, while giving the United Kingdom the right to maintain a garrison on the Suez Canal, and to use Alexandria and Port Said as naval bases.
The Italian invasion of Egypt in 1940 and the subsequent Libyan campaign postponed the departure of British forces. After the Second World War, British forces withdrew from Egypt, except for a military presence in the Suez Canal Zone.
When the British mandate in Palestine was ended in 1948, Arab armies intervened to oppose the newly-proclaimed State of Israel. A cease-fire was agreed in 1949, leaving Egyptian forces occupying the Gaza Strip.
Gen. Muhammad Nagib (Neguib) was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the army and Chairman of the Revolution Command Council (RCC).
In September Gen. Negib was appointed Prime Minister and Military Governor, with Col Nasser as Deputy Prime Minister. In December the 1923 Constitution was abolished, and in January 1953 all political parties were dissolved. On 18 June 1953 the monarchy was abolished, and Egypt was proclaimed a republic, with Gen. Negnib as President and Prime Minister.

Many people like to portray the land south of Sunt (Aswan) as a distinctive area that was not a part of ancient Egypt. This is totally incorrect. This land, which is now called Nubia, was always the Egyptian frontier, since very ancient times. Nubia is a name that was given to Egypt's southern frontier, by the Arabs, after the 7th century CE. The legitimate name is Kush. Ancient Egypt: History Egypt's First Dynasty began in 3100 B.C, and lasted until 2800 BC. During this time a pharaoh known as Menes united upper and lower Egypt, and he founded Egypt's capital city, the well known city of Memphis (not the one Elvis frequented). This city was strategically placed at the apex of the Nile Delta, and done so as the pharaoh wished to control both upper and lower Egypt as easily as possible. The Second Dynasty was from 2800-2700 BC. Old Kingdom Egypt lasted from 2700 until 2200 BC and was a period of relative stability. The Sinai Peninsula, and its resources of (mainly) copper and turquoise were exploited to the full, by the Egyptians as well as the Palestinians. Nearby to Memphis also lies Giza, home of some of Egypt's many pyramids, including the largest one which was built for the pharaoh Khufu. This was 480 metres high and contains over 3.2 million limestone bricks.

The rule of Sadat (1970-1981) Anwar Saddat had been one of the original Free Officers and served as Nasser's vice-president and chosen successor, but he had never been taken seriously until he assumed control of the government. Saddat began to systematically reverse the failed socialist policies of his predecessor, ultimately expelling the Soviets and reforming the economy. But it was Saddat's surprise attack against Israeli forces in the Sinai on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan on October 6, 1973, which gave Sadat the credibility, which earned the respect of his countrymen. The October War shattered the image of Israeli invincibility, which had persisted since the Six Day War and gave the Arab world a tremendous psychological boost. Although the war turned against the Arabs and ended in a stalemate, Sadat emerged as a hero. Sadat then set about liberalizing the Egyptian system. Political prisoners were granted amnesty, censorship of the press was lifted and political parties were allowed. Sadat also made a show of reversing the harsh secularism, which was beginning to alienate the still traditionally religious middle classes by strongly identifying himself as a devout Muslim. At the same time, he instituted the Infitah, or Open Door policy, encouraging foreign investment and the development of the private sector. Gulf Arab investments began to flow into the country and international investment and foreign aid increased.

28. Pre-dynastic History- Egypt History And Information
Throughout most of its predynastic history Egypt encompassed a multiplicityof settlements, which gradually became small tribal kingdoms.
http://www.goegypt.org/aboutegy/history/1-pre.htm
Pre-dynastic history Archaeological evidence suggests that hunters inhabited Egypt over 250,000 years ago when the region was green grassland. The Paleolithic period around 25,000BC brought climatic changes, which turned Egypt into a desert. The inhabitants survived by hunting and fishing and through a primitive form of cultivation. Desertification of Egypt was halted by rains, which allowed communities of cultivators to settle in Middle Egypt and the Nile Delta. These farmers grew wheat, flax and wove linen fabrics in addition to tending flocks. The first indigenous civilizations in Egypt have been identified in the south of the country through archaeological excavations. The Badarian culture is the earliest known developed Egyptian civilization based on farming, hunting and mining. Badarians produced fine pottery and carved objects as well as acquiring turquoise and wood through trading. The Naqada lived in larger settlements about 4,000BC and produced decorated pottery and figurines made from clay and ivory, which indicate they were a war-like people. Naqada artifacts from 3,300BC show further development both in terms of culture and technology. Evidence of irrigation systems and more advanced burial sites, as well as the use of alien materials like lapis lazuli, indicate a cultural diversity and the development of external trading. Throughout most of its pre-dynastic history Egypt encompassed a multiplicity of settlements, which gradually became small tribal kingdoms. These kingdoms evolved into two loosely confederated states; one encompassed the Nile valley up to the Delta (with the Naqada dominating) with Hierakonpolis as capital, represented by the deities Seth and White Crown; the other encompassed the Delta, with Buto as its capital and represented by the deities Horus and Red Crown.

Political History
Egypt has a very colorful history. The Pharaohs were considered divine and they ruled over a highly stratified society. The first pyramid was built in the 27th century BC; over the next 500 years the monuments only got grander. Monarchical power was at its greatest during the 4th dynasty when Cheops, Chephren and Mycerinus built the Great Pyramids of Giza. Through the 6th and 7th dynasties power was diffused and small principalities began to appear and then Egypt plunged into civil war. An independent kingdom was established at Thebes (present-day Luxor) and, under Metuhotep II, Egypt again came under control of a single Pharaoh. From 1550 to 1150 BC the New Kingdom bloomed. Thereafter, Egypt was ruled by generals: Ramses I, II and III, and Seti I. They built massive monuments and temples, but the empire began falling apart and it was in disarray when the Greek conqueror Alexander the Great arrived in 332 BC and established a new capital. Under Ptolemy I, Alexandria became a great city. The Greeks ruled Egypt for 300 years. Following the death of Antony and Cleopatra in 30 BC Egypt became part of the Roman Empire. Wjem the Roman Empire fell apart in the 3rd and 4th centuries, Nubians, north Africans and Persians invaded. Despite this, Byzantine Egypt was relatively stable until 640 AD when the Arabs arrived. The Arabs brought Islam to Egypt and established Fustat (on the site of present-day Cairo) as the seat of an unstable government. Ultimately it was the Fatimids who came to control Egypt. Egypt prospered under the Fatimids and Cairo became a thriving metropolis.
