for the future
By Season Osborne
Oct. 18, 2002 Charlotte Mearns works with Aboriginal people who aren't statistics. They live on the streets of Vancouver. And, without an address, Statistics Canada can’t count them. “Statistics Canada has no aboriginal-specific data collection because they don’t have access to the homeless population,” says Mearns, a senior project officer at Lu’ma Native Housing Society. “But we do, through our programs.” The Chief of Manitoba (standing) talks to First Nations Statistics representatives in Northern Ontario. Last year, Lu’ma Native Housing funded a research project to determine the numbers of sexually exploited aboriginal youth in Vancouver’s downtown East Side. It hired aboriginal youth from the sex trade to be outreach workers, and got them to conduct the surveys. Lu’ma Native Housing’s unorthodox method of collecting data wasn’t recognized by Statistics Canada though, because the workers didn’t “use the proper mathematical parameters to collect the information.”

Sister cities, sister stats

These numbers are among the strong reasons Upstate metropolitan areas are partnering to pull themselves to more prosperous times. Shared pain can lead to cooperative solutions.
People, incomes leave New York's metro areas

Every large Upstate New York metro area lost people and their incomes from 1994 through 1998, according to Internal Revenue Service migration data. "Thruway cities" share outmigration woes, region by region The large Upstate New York cities all lost tens of thousands of people migrating to the South, and boosted their losses with respect to other regions in most cases, as well. Central New York gains/losses vs. other New York state metro areas The Syracuse metro area lost people to its sister cities along the Thruway, but gained from smaller cities and the Big Apple. Friday, March 17, 2000 Key indicators of economic health: How Central New York stacks up The Syracuse Newspapers asked economic consultants RFA Dismal Sciences to provide its rankings for the nation's 100 most populous metropolitan areas with respect to several key economic indicators. CNY's loss of people helps fuel others' gains When the impact of people moving in and moving out is totaled, Central New York is at the bottom of the heap among the nation's 100 most populous metro areas.

Economic Statistics: Consumer Price Index
Lockwood Library Guide The consumer price index (CPI) is compiled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and is the most widely quoted figure on inflation. The CPI measures the overall rate of price change for a fixed basket of goods and services bought by households. Because it prices the same items every month, this measure of inflation or deflation reflects the cost of maintaining the same purchases over time. The CPI is used in a variety of ways to adjust for cost increases in government and commerce programs, it is also used to make inflation adjustments in wages, pensions, and business and union contracts. NOTE: The CPI is designed to measure the change in price levels over time within a given geographic area. It is not designed to compare living costs between cities. Although the U.S. government no longer compiles data on comparative living costs, the ACCRA Cost of Living Index (BusDoc Ref HD6983 I58) and Lockwood Library's Relocation Information can be useful for comparing living costs between U.S. cities.
