61. Some Open-source Software Hacks
Mostly, I'm just posting this to get some critiques on my dylan programming style.lazy0.2.tgz is a little module to add SICP-style lazy evaluation to Dylan.

Some open-source software hacks
Below are some small pieces of open-source software I've written. There's not a lot here at the moment, but assuming that I don't get bored of programming it should slowly grow.
Python
Python is an extremely neat high-level language. It has dynamic semantics reminiscent of Lisp and Smalltalk, and is really a joy to program in the language design is so clean that Python code looks like pseudocode.
  • UserFile is a small wrapper class in the spirit of UserDict and UserList it's a Python wrapper around the file object. (One of the only annoyances in Python is that the languages distinguishes between extensions written in C and classes written in Python. Fortunately, it's easy to paper over this flaw until we reach the Nirvana of Python 2.0, where metaclasses and type unification shall abound.) DejaGrabber.py is a module written to make automatically searching the DejaNews archive more convenient. It's surprisingly capable for such a small amount of code (this is a phrase that gets repeated a lot when working in Python). Right now, I have

Covers reflection, selfmodifying code or mutable MOPs, dylan, and aspect-oriented programming.
http://www.ai.mit.edu/projects/dynlangs/
People Research Talks News ... Videos We are exploring the design and implementation of next generation programming languages to support intelligent, adaptive, complex software systems. In order to implement dynamic, adaptive software systems, programming languages must support reasoning about their own structure, performance, and environment (often called "reflection"). Furthermore, there must be support for dynamic modification of behavior (think self-modifying code, or a "mutable MOP (Meta Object Protocol)"). Finally, this should all be efficient; in particular, code that does not make use of self reflection or modification should not take a performance hit. Our research group takes inspiration and motivation from the broad field of artificial intelligence, which is always pushing the boundaries of what can be accomplished with computation, and we apply research from the fields of programming language design and implementation. Our primary focus is on dynamic object-oriented programming languages, such as Dylan and CLOS. We are also actively pursuing research in Aspect-oriented programming.

It streams audio to an icecast or shoutcast server, but has some timing issues and is not feature complete. The archive includes the source files, a sample config file, a readme, and a copy of libsfl.a (compiled for i386 Linux). If you want to retarget it for another platform, the SFL library is require as its socket routines are used in places. The end goal of the SFL usage and wrappers (in development) for mmaping is to allow ports of yell to Win32 clients, as well as POSIX compliant unices. This project is in long-term sleep as I don't have time to develop it any more.

Object-Oriented Languages
The Cetus Team maintains a large collection of links about most object-oriented languages. One of my favourite object-oriented languages is Cecil , by Craig Chambers. It is a multiple-dispatch language that supports both exploratory untyped programming and large-scale statically-typed programming. It includes some new and very expressive ideas (see the paper "Predicate Dispatching: A Unified Theory of Dispatch" by Michael Ernst, Craig Kaplan and Craig Chambers). Cecil is quite similar to the theoretical language that I developed in my

How to write Pascal programs in Dylan
Dylan is promoted as an object-oriented, dynamic language, but it also offers a rich set of constructs for programming in other styles. This essay explores Dylan from the perspective of a programmer used to traditional procedural languages, such as Pascal or C, who may want to use the facilities offered by Dylan development environments without changing programming style or thinking in a different way. Also, some features of Dylan which mesh well with the procedural programming style but have no direct analogs in Pascal or C may make an appropriate addition to one's bag of tricks. This essay is intended to be used as a tutorial introduction and not as a complete reference work. To avoid bogging down the discussion, much has been omitted and some details have been ignored. The Fourth ICFP Programming Contest
Organised by: Damien Doligez Luc Maranget Pierre Weis , INRIA Rocquencourt.
Results
The results are now public:
  • First prize: Haskell Carrots with LALR(5000000) , written in Haskell. The judges hereby proclaim that Haskell is the programming tool of choice for discriminating hackers Second prize: Dylan Hackers with Dylan Hackers , written in (guess what?) Dylan. The judges hereby proclaim that Dylan is a fine programming tool for many applications Judges' special prize: Blue Avengers with Erlightning , written in Erlang. The judges hereby proclaim that the Blue Avengers are a group of extremely cool hackers
We also awarded a third and fourth place, although no prize is associated with them. Well, in fact, we awarded two third places, since these two entries are (almost) tied, using the output size criterion.
  • Third place: with runme , written in Objective Caml. Third place: BlobMakers with ElegantBlob , written in C.
The details of the judging process are now available. The tar files of all the submissions are available too.
