(circa) Saxo Grammaticus, in Gesta Danorum , says that the Danish King Frode raised a huge united army from many conquered lands and defeated a king of the Huns.
As Western Europe was threatened by the Huns (A.D. 406~436 - their most famous king was called Attila) and the Roman Empire wasn't capable of holding its position on the British islands any more, the Angles were (according to The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle ) asked to come and participate in the war against the Picts. The Angles are believed to have lived somewhere in the area of Southern Jutland and the estuary of river Elbe, or maybe further north on Jutland.
The Jutes, the Saxons and more Angles participate in the war on Britain. Soon the Britons are fought by the new-comers.
The first Danish king known from contemporary sources is killed during a military attack against the Frankish Empire. Name: Huglik [or Chocillaicus in Gregor of Tours' annals].

6.2 The Viking Age
[Main menu]
[Previous paragraph] [Next paragraph] Throughout its early history, Denmark had many contacts with the outside world, but with the beginning of the Viking Age, c. 800 AD, the country really became part of European history. The Danes became most notorious as the Vikings who plundered churches and monasteries, but behind this rather one-sided picture there lies a far more complex interplay of political and cultural factors.

The Unification of the Country and Royal Power
As early as 700, Denmark was ruled by a stronger royal power than had existed before; a king named Angantyr (Ongendus) can probably be linked to Ribe where a regulated seasonal trading centre was established just after 700. Around 700, the Merovingian domination crumbled and the outlying provinces of the Frankish empire gained their independence. This paved the way for a Danish display of power in the southern parts of the North Sea area with Saxony and Friesland, and Ribe became Denmark's first international trading centre. When Charlemagne and the Carolingians attempted to re-establish the power of the Franks around 800, it resulted in clashes with the Danes under Godfred; he would neither relinquish his power in Friesland and amongst the Abodrites, nor renounce the tributary income which he had obtained during the weakness of the Merovingians. In order to safeguard this income, he moved the traders from the Abodrite area to Hedeby, a town he had recently established in what is now North Germany, and fortified Denmark's southern border with a new rampart. Godfred's battles with Charlemagne were not just simple poaching on his preserves, but clashes between two empire builders.

Denmark
Denmark is the smallest of the Scandinavian nations other than Iceland. Located between the North Sea on the west and the Baltic Sea on the southeast, Denmark is separated from Norway by the Skagerrak and from Sweden by the Kattegat and the Oresund. In the south, it shares a 68 km (43 mi) border with Germany. The Faeroe Islands and Greenland have been part of Denmark since the 14th century and are now self-governing units within the nation. During the 9th century the name Denmark (Danmark: "border district of the Danes") was used for the first time. Subsequently, Denmark ruled over much of Scandinavia, which developed a common Nordic culture. At the same time, because of Denmark's proximity to Germany, Denmark has also been influenced by German culture. Today, Denmark's balanced

Denmark has no real World Cup tradition to speak of. It qualified for the first time in 1986 and made another appearance in '98. Nonetheless, it already has a strong reputation for being an entertaining team with players like Elkjaer Larsen and the Laudrup brothers, who dazzled the world with their skills. These stars may be gone, but the new crop of internationals will not let the country down. As the countdown to the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan continues, CNNSI.com's Pedro Pinto will take a close look at all of the nations that will contend for football's greatest prize. Pinto is an anchor on World Sport, the international sports show that airs live on CNN/Sports Illustrated and CNN International.
Denmark normally operates on a 3-5-2 system with a strong back line, a hardworking midfield and a poisonous attack. There is plenty of talent at the back: AC Milan players Martin Laursen and Thomas Helveg are used to facing the world's top strikers week in and week out. Manager Morten Olsen likes to use two defensive midfielders to cover the holes that can be left in a three-man defense. Thomas Gravesen is a true "hard man," and veteran Jan Heintze can still run all day. As if they weren't good enough, there is Martin Jorgensen, who has turned into a star for Udinese. But the true talent of this side is up front. Ebbe Sand is deadly, and Jon Dahl Tomasson scores goals with ease.
