OUSD Urban Dreams Lesson Plans Campaign Financing POSSIBLE STUDENT ACTIVITIES (continued)
  • A group of four students could present a debate to the entire class; the debate topic would be Resolved, PACs have the right to donate as much money as they wish to candidates for political office. This debate would more than likely focus on the issue of free speech (money = speech). (If you wish a format for this debate, please contact Maryann Wolfe at Oakland Technical High School, 879-3050)
Have a group of three students interview their congressperson or senator (or their legislative assistants located locally) to explore the impact of the need to seek campaign contributions on candidates and officeholders lives; it would also be important to seek out articles on this as well so have another group of three students perform this task. Have these two groups report back to the entire class; the format could be a role-play where three of the students interview three others who take on the role of the congressperson or senator.

    Contents of Curriculum Unit 93.02.06:
    To Guide Entry
I teach remedial reading at Betsy Ross Arts Magnet Middle School which is a fully integrated city school with a strong drama department, and a dedicated English department. This year with the new superintendent, middle school reform is a priority issue. However, because Betsy Ross is an established magnet school it cannot share in the federal funds, which have been made available to start new magnet schools and to instigate middle school reform. So without the benefit of outside resources the faculty at Betsy Ross is being asked to devise new scheduling matrixes and to create new curriculums to more fully coordinate the arts classes with the academic classes. I plan to use the resources of the Yale New Haven Teachers Institute to create a folk tale curriculum that could be extended to involve the reading laboratory with the fifth and sixth grade English and drama departments. Such a curriculum would meet a zeal need. Towards this end the primary goals of this unit are to foster critical thinking skills, to sharpen writing skills, and to refine public speaking skills. These goals will be met by reading fairy tales, comparing fairy tales, writing fairy tales, and telling fairy tales.

Competition Teams Lesson Plans Dear Readers, If you are planning to give a workshop on parliamentary procedure and don't know where to begin, what follows is a lesson in making a main motion. This lesson plan includes page references from ROBERT'S RULES OF ORDER NEWLY REVISED, and sections from our video PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE MADE SIMPLE: THE BASICS, and a script that you can give your students to act out. The correct terminology is in the script, but the students have to make up their own debate for each question. Here are some teaching techniques that I have discovered that work: 1. Teach concepts of motions first, and then finally put then in their proper rank. 2. Each lesson begin with a main motion, and then do something to that motion while it is pending. For example, amend it. 3. Keep the instruction to students simple, short and to the point. Always have a script for them to act out. You can follow the model below. We are currently coming up with script ideas for every motion in Robert's Rules, the scripts will be available later this year. 4. The best way to learn parliamentary procedure is for people to practice it. Everyone should take a turn presiding, making a main motion, and debating it.

However, it is very important for students to "feel" history as well as to know it. Therefore, students can study the circumstances under which Japanese Americans were removed from their homes, their cities, and encamped in isolation during World War II.

    The Great Debate
With the exploration and exploitation of the solar system within reach, the question must now be answered: Do we have the right to colonize other parts of the solar system when we have not even been able to maintain the resources of our own planet? During this activity, students will form three working groups is order to prepare a debate that should last one class period. The question above is the question to be answered. Here are some suggestions for organizing the debate: Groups: Group 1: This is the group that thinks we have the right to go to other planets and colonize them.
