Debates and Lesson Plans Using Debates
Debate Approach A. Guidelines for Conducting a Debate Discussion often calls for the cooperative thinking of members of a group in search of a solution or approach to a specific situation. Debate, o n the other hand, begins with the assumption that the debaters have already found a solution or approach to a specific situation and their intention is to persuade others that their solution or approach is the proper one. The method of debate can be an effective device for encouraging participants to clearly and logically form arguments based upon evidence to support their positions and to develop a sense of efficacy in their ability to change policy or sway public opinion. A specific example of a way in which debate might be a useful tool I as a follow-up to a policy-making exercise. Participants in the minority who have not agreed with the policy established might use the debate as an effective means of trying to effect a change in public opinion which might in turn lead to a change in policy. How to Proceed (The form of debate described here is widely used but rather formalized. For your purposes, you may wish to make the procedures less formal or use some other form of debate.)

Desertification is the process whereby non-desert lands become desert-like. It refers to changes in isolated patches of land as well as to changes in land bordering recognized deserts. Although there is much debate on the causes of the process as there is on its solution, most scientists agree that it is brought about by a mixture of both human and environmental factors. Changes in settlement patterns, increased population growth, drought , erosion, deforestation, overcultivation and overgrazing of land, are just some of the factors which contribute to it.
Suggestion: Team up with your students' science teacher to do an intensive unit on the process.

  • Confucianism: Respect for family, hardwork and education
  • Taoism: Keeping your life simple
  • Buddhism: Respect for other property and all life
  • Legalism: All power to the legal ruler Orally presented problem: Based on what people believe is the right and proper thing to do, their behavior, or their response to a particular problem could be very different. From their point of view, they would be behaving in a good or proper manner. From your point of view, they might be behaving very oddly. Even if people behave in the same way, are they behaving that way for the same reason? If you don't understand another person's point of view, do you think you might misunderstand them? Could that lead to problems that might be completely unnecessary? Of course! It's important to try and understand other peoples points of view, and important for them to try and understand yours.
