What is Ravenswood Morris?
  • May Day: We dance the sun up at dawn (you heard me, dawn) every year on the shores of Lake Michigan, at the lakefront park just east of Morse and Sheridan. This is the approximate location
  • AntiMorris: the same site used for May Day . (See more about the AntiMorris
  • Cultural Festivals: We have danced at several of these over the years, including the Custer Street Faire, the Evanston Ethnic Arts Festival, the Skokie Cultural Festival, The Real Ale Festival , and the Chicago Park District's Unity in Our Community festival held in Pottawattomie Park.
  • Farmer's Markets: Another fun place to dance out. We have occasionally shown up at these events in Evanston and Oak Park, especially later in the summer.
  • Special Occasions:
  • Morris Ales: These are gatherings of Morris dancers held throughout the year in various locations. We attend the Midwest Morris Ale, the location of which changes with the host team each year, and sometimes other ales throughout the region and beyond.
Ravenswood Morris meets to practice most Thursday evenings from 7PM to 9PM. As of September 2002 we have moved to a new practice site

MORRIS DANCE FESTIVAL
PART OF KIDS ARK
It is thought that morris dancing is a very old tradition and may go back to preChristian times, when it was probably part of a fertility or luck-bringing ceremony. However it had nearly died out by the end of the last century, and had to be revived. There are now morris dancers all over England and in other countries too.
At Cheltenham in Gloucestershire traditional dancers from all over England came together to dance in the streets as part of the Cheltenham Folk Festival. The hosts were the Gloucestershire Morris Men, together with their hobby horse.
The most well-known morris dance style is the Cotswold morris dance (see picture opposite). The dancers are dressed in the usual morris costume of white trousers and shirt, decorated with sashes, ribbons and bells. In some dances the dancers will use sticks which they clash in time to the music. Another dance even includes leapfrog.
In addition to the dancers there are often other characters involved. The most common is a fool, who keeps the public amused and the dancers in order with a pig's bladder on a stick. The fool has another important job - that of collecting money from the audience. Another character that you sometimes see is a hobby horse - a huge wooden beast with snapping jaw.
Traditional dancing is not restricted to men, women dance too. In addition to morris dances the festival also featured female clog dancers and molly dancers. Again a number of props are used such as handkerchiefs and these decorated bows.

The Morris comprises a variety of forms of traditional ritual dances from England, but The Black Jokers specialize in Cotswold Morris, as was practiced in the villages of Bledington and Brackley in the English Midlands.
Past
Morris Dancing is one of the characteristic Folk Dances of England. Its origins are lost in the mists of time, derived from the pan-European agrarian traditions of fertility rites and celebrations at sowing and harvest-tide. Though well known during Shakespeare's time, the Industrial Revolution cut into its constituency so that by the turn of the century the Morris was practiced only by a dwindling number of Ale-drinking pensioners in, what some would call, the lesser sophisticated villages of the English Midlands.
Transition
Discovered in the nick of time by an itinerant ethno-musicologist, Morris Dancing was seen as a hither-to unstudied subject of academic research, and via publications and other means enjoyed a revival in Britain. Morris became a part of the curriculum in schools, new teams were formed, and over the decades it has spread throughout the English-speaking world.
Present
Today, the Morris has found a home in academe, providing research opportunities and thesis topics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Teams can be found associated with many prominent institutions of higher education, among them Marlboro College, University of Indiana at Bloomington, UCal Berkeley, and even such conservative institutions such as Oxford, Cambridge, and M.I.T. Students, staff and faculty alike are captivated by the potent combination of aerobic dance and fermented beverages. Ph.D., LL.D., MBA and SB join with TA and RA; engineer and mathematician dance be-side poet and architect to celebrate the changing seasons. The colorful sight of the dancers with their bells and waving hankies, along with the simple yet

Morris Dance
Morris dancing is a traditional form of English folk dance that is thought to have originated in 15th-century Spain, either as a Moorish dance or in imitation of one. In rural England, the dance was a feature of May Day celebrations. The dance is part pantomime, using such stock characters as a Fool and a hobbyhorse to mime traditional English stories. In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in Morris in England and in the United States.
Banbury Cross Morris
Banbury Cross Morris is a Morris dancing team for young people, based in Newton , Massachusetts. When the team was founded in 1981, it was the first Morris team for young people in the U.S. Today, a number of teams for young people have followed Banbury Cross 's example, but we still proudly carry on our tradition of teaching Morris to new generations of young dancers.
