A Brief Overview of Irish Dance
Many people today have been introduced to Irish dance through stage productions such as Riverdance or Lord of the Dance It is unfortunate when adherents or practitioners of one form or another of Irish dance feel the need to diminish one of the other forms as being "foreign", "inauthentic", or "non-traditional". This is especially so in the context of the Irish culture which, for many centuries, was systematically suppressed and outlawed. That so much has been able to be reconstructed is close to miraculous. That so little represents an unbroken continuity is tragic. Of the nearly 150 ceili and set dances danced today, only four have a record of being continuously used as social dance forms for the past century. But this in no way lessens the stature or meaningfulness of the other dances as traditional dances. There are two different ways to explore the relationships among the various Irish dance forms: structurally and historically. The structural root of Irish dance is found in step-dance while the historical root lies in ceili dance. It is important to recognize that no detailed descriptions of Irish dances have been found from before the mid-nineteenth century, and that all of the forms of Irish dance seen today were present in the culture by then. Even the Irish words for dance, damhsa and rince, derive from the French danse and the English rink (to skate on ice), respectively. However, the general outlines of their history are known. I recommend anyone interested read the book "The Story of Irish Dance" by Helen Brennan, Mount Eagle Publications, Dingle, Co. Kerry, Ireland, 1999 (ISBN 86322 244 7) which contains much more interesting information than I can provide here.

Irish and Scottish Dance
We foot it all the night,
Weaving olden dances,
Mingling hands and mingling glances
Till the moon has taken flight;
To and fro we leap
And chase the frothy bubbles,
While the world is full of troubles
And is anxious in its sleep.
-WB Yeats, The Stolen Child Irish and Scottish people have been dancing at ceilis or ceilidhs (literally, gatherings) for hundreds of years, and enjoying themselves no end. Traditional dancing is now undergoing a resurgence both at home and around the world. In light of this, and of the close links between celtic music and dance, Ceolas presents the following information and links to the world of Irish and Scottish traditional dance.
What is Irish dancing?
There are two general kinds of dancing: set and ceili dancing. Ceili dancing involves large groups, and is pretty easy to pick up, while set dancing is much more elaborate and usually requires more teaching. Set dances are usually danced by four couples, forming a square, and have evolved from French quadrilles. In Scotland, the ceilidh seems to be the equivalent to the Irish ceili, and there is also Scottish Country Dancing and competitive Highland dancing. In Ireland, the exhibition-style Step dancing is also associated with competitions. Set dancing

Over thirty of our musicians traveled to Cincinnati this past weekend to compete in our Midwest Regional Fleadh. The Crotty Doran branch should be proud of ALL of their musicians. They maintained a high standard of traditional music! Our 15-18 Grupa Cheoil placed second as did our Senior Ceili band. We will post the solo prize winners soon. Many have also qualified to compete in the All Ireland Fleadh being held in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary in August. There were too many for me to write down...isn't that a great problem!
