62. The Deborah Hay Dance Company - Home
Performance schedules, tour dates, class information, historical background and news about America's foremost organization for classic modern dance (Austin, TX, USA)
http://www.deborahhay.com/
PHOTOS The Deborah Hay Dance Company Photos from Music. Photos from Solo Trilogy: Boom Boom Boom. 2000. biography Deborah Hay was born in Brooklyn in 1941. Her mother had performed with the corps de ballet at the Roxy Theater and as her first dance teacher she directed her training until Hay was a teenager. Mother and daughter regularly attended Radio City Music Hall, where she most fondly remembers the Rockettes and the orchestra. They went each season to see the New York City Ballet at City Center. By the time she was a teenager she was seeking her own interest in modern rather than classical training. Living in Manhattan by 1960 and studying at the Cunningham studio, she became part a group of experimental artists who were influenced by Merce Cunningham and John Cage, later known as the Judson Dance Theater, one of the most radical and explosive art movements of the twentieth century. In 1964 she danced with the Cunningham Dance Company during a 6-month tour through Europe and Asia. By 1967, Hay had already achieved a prominent status as a young choreographer and her distinctive style began to emerge. She focused on large-scale dance projects involving untrained dancers, thus distancing herself from the performing arena and opening a long period of reflection about how dance is transmitted and who dances. This stage of HayÕs career reached into the following decade. In 1970 she left New York and settled in a community in northern Vermont. In this period Hay began to define a rigorous method of performance practice that still continues to inform her work as a student, teacher, and dancer. The most notable achievement of the period is a series of 10 circle dances, which did not include an audience. This encounter, of a powerful concept combined with the exquisitely simple choreography of the ten dances, are collected and described in Moving Through the Universe in Bare Feet (Swallow Press, 1975). HayÕs first book on choreography and the first example of her distinctive memory/concept mode of choreographic record, is based on the narratives underlining the process of her dance-making, rather than the technical specifications or notations of their form.

Noh Dancing
Don Herbison-Evans donherbisonevans@yahoo.com
Technical Report

Basser Department of Computer Science

University of Sydney (updated 14 January 2001) INTRODUCTION Just as there are a number of different forms of theatre in the west (opera, ballet, drama, vaudeville, etc.) so there are several forms in Japan (Kabuki, Kyogen, Shimpa, etc). One of these, the Noh theatre, has a place in Japanese society that bears some analogies to the place Shakespearian drama has in the West: the dramas and their stories are well known; they were composed several hundred years ago (Kusano, 1978,105); they are in the archaic language of that time (Ito, 1979, 271); were performed only by male actors until recently (Kusano, 1978, 118); assume other customs, dress, habits, and society of that time; are based on older myths and legends current then; and probably survive because of the allegorical illumination they cast on the timeless concerns of the human condition. Noh theatre differs from Shakespearian theatre in being some two-hundred years older, having a wider repetoire (about 240 pieces, compared with 38 for Shakespeare (Shakespeare, 1937)), having a more balanced mixture of music and dance embedded in the drama, using masks for many of the actors (Kusano, 1978, 108), and of course: being in Japanese.
Koomote ORIGINS The Noh pieces which are performed today were written by a small number of dramatists. Of these, Zeami (1363-1441) was the greatest, being responsible for 100 of the 240 Noh pieces. His father, Kanami, also wrote many of the pieces (Kusano, 1978,108). Zeami's son in-law, Zenchiku, was also a Noh master and contributed some pieces (Ortolani, 1983, 147). The close family inter-relationship of these authors was conditioned by Japanese society at that time, in which a son had an obligation to follow his father's occupation. This was augmented by the custom of Master artists of adopting their major proteges into their family (Japan, 1975, 6).

The California Heritage Dancers are dedicated to preserving through exhibitions, the rich heritage of what has become known as American Square Dancing. In order not to lose these old time dances, the California Heritage Dancers was organized in 1986 recruiting members from various square dance clubs in Southern California. Extensive research has resulted in a large repertoire of varied dances from the 1700's to 1996. The dancers have created authentic costuming and music to complete the picture. A video tape is available that will take you on "A Journey Through America's Folk Dance" highlighting some of the Heritage Dancer's routines and provides a unique look at the roots of modern square dancing. Dance of the Ages
When Ken is not too busy with his new company, he will write these pages to suit him, but until then.... When Ken went to his 10th year high school reunion, he suprised many people by handing out business cards for his dance group, Nachtanz Historical Dancers. He has spent many years researching and reconstructing dance from the 15th to 19th centuries, primarily focusing on 15th-17th century dance. On this page, he will publish dance steps, dance reconstructions, and other dance-related research. The current offering is a reconstruction of "Leoncello Nuovo" following up on the previous article on 15th century dance steps which can be found on the Archive page. "Leoncello Nuovo" is a fun and flirtatious dance for three that can be hammed up to no end. We have gotten several queries as to what "Nachtanz" means. According to Ken, "nachtanz" means "after dance" and appears to have been a 16th century German dance that was the second of a pair of dances. There are several tunes for the dance, but no extant descriptions or instructions for performing it. When Ken formed his dance company, he chose "Nachtanz" as its name because it was unusual and distinctive in the Renaissance dance world. Although Nachtanz has disbanded, but the name is still associated with us, and represented something we did together (I was also a dancer in Nachtanz). We thought it an ideal name to use as our user ID for the Internet.
