More local news Back to Home News Sunday, Apr 06, 2003 Local News Posted on Wed, Jul. 17, 2002 Teachers make plans for Sept. 11 lessons By Dana Hull Mercury News In less than two months, the United States will observe the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and teachers are already thinking about how to mark the day in their classrooms. In the Bay Area, a dozen middle- and high-school social studies teachers are at San Francisco State University this week for a seminar on ``Understanding the World After September 11.'' Led by San Francisco State faculty experts in areas such as American foreign policy, Islamic culture and civil liberties, the weeklong session is believed to be one of the first of its kind. Teachers face a challenging task: Sept. 11 falls just as children are heading back to school, and the beginning of a new academic year is always hectic. The first anniversary of a traumatic event can trigger intense emotions, and many students as well as adults remain fearful of a second wave of attacks.

Stuff to Make Your Feel Patriotic
Guide picks With all the bad news of late, it's time for something to cheer you up. Here are online resources dealing with patriotic stuff. Enjoy.
Flag Resources

Lots of links to lots of cool things dealing with the American flag. Downloads of virtual flags, real flags, and more. Check it out. Very Cool Flash Web Site Best of the Net
This is a VERY cool and super patriotic Web site using flash technology. It's based, roughly, on the events of Sept. 11, but done in a way that is really uplifting. If you have flash, you should see this site - it's a tad hokey, maybe, but I really liked it. Great Version of Star Spangled Banner The Dixie Chicks, a very good band, have a version of the Star Spangled Banner up on their Web site, and it's a version you can only get there. While it's free, so to speak, they ask that you make a donation to the Red Cross.

"The Big Draft Lie"
by WYLL Radio's Kevin McCullough
It started a few weeks ago. This rumbling that is beginning to turn into a consistent 'talking point' that now seems to be thrown out as common as the day's weather forecast. When New York Congressman Charles Rangel first began talking about the Military Draft, he purposefully began a discussion that really had nothing to do with the issue of the draft itself, but rather the issue of race in the armed forces.
It was underhanded. It was sneaky. And it is a total lie.
But in doing so Congressman Rangel did something his mentor President Clinton became so adept at. Misdirecting the attention of those seeking truth to ultimately seek out emotion and create a great public outcry. The only problem is it's not based on anything factual.
His great argument for why the United States should again adopt a mandatory draft was articulated to really hijack any and all discussion pertaining to the use of actual force in Iraq. Something the United States has made clear will be a last resort, if or when it must be used.

Huntington Woods resident Micah Fialka-Feldman , 18, will vote Tuesday in his first election. With him are his parents, Rich Feldman and Janice Flalka Oakland Press photo/LARA MOSSA November 3, 2002 Stepping into the voting booth Tuesday will mean more to Micah Fialka-Feldman than a pit stop between school and home. For the 18-year-old Huntington Woods resident, it will be a rite of passage. Fialka-Feldman, a senior at Berkley High School, has a developmental disability that makes it difficult for him to read and write, but that has not stopped him from becoming involved in politics and following important issues. He has been looking forward to his first trip to the polls for a long time Declaring himself proudly as a Democrat, Fialka-Feldman said he has passed out campaign literature for gubernatorial candidate Jennifer Granholm and other party members. He follows political issues on the Internet with special software that reads text to him. Wearing a red, white and blue tie with donkeys on it, Fialka-Feldman said he plans to vote for Granholm, along with Proposal K for arts and parks.

Celebrate American Newspaper Week by teaching students to be knowledgeable and discerning news readers. Explore six great sites that will help you teach about the newspaper before you start teaching with it! Included: Seven original ideas for teaching students about the newspaper. According to a Readership survey conducted by the Audit Bureau of Circulations and the Newspaper Association of America, seven out of ten teenagers ages 12 to 17 reported they read a newspaper at least once a week, and 47 percent said the newspaper was their main source of news and information. It's clear that most students are familiar with the informational and educational value of newspapers. But what do they know about the contents and structure of the newspaper they read?
