Transcripción y Edición de Ruth Montaner
Introduction During many years the Cuban government has bragged about the huge success of its social programs, to a large extent carried out thanks to the extraordinary help it received from the Soviet Union and other socialist countries, and to the constant sacrifices demanded from the population. After 1959, those social programs have been constantly hammered in Cuba through the mass media. The media has also given all sort of excuses for the persistent and costly mistakes of the revolutionary leadership. At the same time, the new generations have been given a very bleak picture of the Cuban past “We have the first place in education among the Third World countries and over several industrialized countries; first place in health among the Third World countries, with indexes over several industrialized countries and we are rapidly getting closer to the first places in the world.” From the very beginning, much of the resources used to achieve an accelerated social development were used without taking into account that Cuba was a sugar monoculture economy that would not be able to support it and would make the country more and more dependent on the Soviet Union. Nevertheless, a certain development in the rural zones was achieved in regards to public education, health, housing, etc., especially in the most isolated areas. Many people, mainly from the left, and even some international institutions, believe these statements as fact without considering that the Cuban people has lived under a rationing system of consumer goods since March 1962. It came about with a serious deterioration of the conditions in urban zones in

  • Review information about the Cold War: What was the Cold War? Who was involved? Was it really a war? Did direct military confrontation occur? Which countries were involved besides the United States and Soviet Union? The following overview may help direct the discussion: The Cold War describes the tense and hostile relationship between the Soviet Union and the U.S. between 1945 and 1992. The communist government of the Soviet Union wanted to convert other countries to communism. The U.S. pledged to support free countries so they could resist communism. Both countries had nuclear weapons and were capable of launching a nuclear war. Other countries took sides in this international conflict. Many Western European countries sided with the U.S. to form NATO (National Atlantic Treaty Organization) in 1949. Eastern European countries signed the Warsaw Pact and formed an alliance with the Soviet Union.

Not since its discovery by Spanish explorers in the late fifteenth century had an event so clearly marked a new era for the country. After nearly a century and a half as perhaps the most extreme example of Latin America's postindependence affliction of caudillismo and military rule, Venezuela's political life after 1959 was defined by uninterrupted civilian constitutional rule. This stark break with the past has been attributed most often to the government's petroleum-based wealth, which gave it the material resources to win a vast portion of the population over to the democratic consensus, and to the spirit of cooperation among the nation's various political entities (commonly known as the "Spirit of the 23rd of January," after the date of Pérez's fall from power) as embodied in the Pact of Punto Fijo. Betancourt and his AD colleagues had apparently learned from the disastrous consequences of their strident posture during their previous stint at governing. They now reversed themselves by granting concessions to a broad range of political forces that included many of their most bitter enemies during the

    – Kennedy announced his course of action (to employ a naval blockade) on national television. th October – 25 ships en route to Cuba from Russia turned round before they reached Cuba, pulling back from direct conflict. th October – Kennedy received a letter from Khrushchev offering to remove the missiles from Cuba in exchange for the promise that USA would invade Cuba. th October – Before Kennedy could reply to the first, a second letter from Khrushchev was received demanding that USA removed their missiles from Turkey. Kennedy refused to remove the American missiles in Turkey because he felt a deal over the missiles would damage American prestige. Instead he replied to the first letter promising to lift the naval blockade and not invade Cuba as long as all the missiles in Cuba were removed and none more installed there. The presidents brother informed the Russian ambassador (evening of 27 th October) that the president had considered removing the missiles from Turkey for some time.
