Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao
The Land and Its Potentials Located in the Southwest part of the Philippines, the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao is composed of the mainland provinces of Magujindanao, Lanao del Sur and island provinces of Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Basilan. The region has a total land area of 11,996.47 square kilometers, representing about 4.0 percent of its 1,032,000 labor force is engaged in agriculture. It has a climate that is conducive to year round crop production due to moderate and even distribution of rainfull throughout the year. ARMM has dry and wet seasons and generally spared from typhoons. Along with commercial and industrial potentials, the region's comparative advantage lies in agriculture and fisheries pertinent regional laws were made to encourage large companies to invest on the development of the region's vast tracts of undercultivated lands and marine resources. The heartland of Maguindanao is marshy and fertile flatlands suitable to rice, corn, vegetables and other commercial crops. Like the other three provinces, Maguindanao has wide coconut and cassava plantatins for commercial or industrial purposes. The vast coastline of Sulu has abundant coral reef rich in marine resources. With Tawi-Tawi, Sulu produces around 72% of the country's seaweeds. Pearl is one of the bounties coming from the deep vast Sulu Sea, the bearer of the world's largest pearl called "THE PEARL OF ALLAH". Coconut, cassava, abaca and the exotic durian and mangosteen abound in its rolling hills.

Alternative Agriculture Series, Number 4, January 1993 Author: Theresa Golz , Market Research Specialist
Institute for Business and Industry Development Series Editor: Dwight Aakre , Farm Mangement Specialist
NDSU Extension Service Crambe is also referred to as Abyssinian mustard, Abyssinian kale, colewart, or datran. It is a member of the mustard family, which includes crops such as rapeseed (canola and industrial oilseed rape) and tame mustard. Crambe, native to the Mediterranean region, was first introduced into the United States during the 1940s and has been grown at North Dakota research centers intermittently since 1958. Crambe seed yields an industrial oil that contains a high level of erucic acid. Renewed interest in specialty crops has stimulated research and limited production of crambe in North Dakota. Commercial production of crambe for oil crush was contracted on 4,500 acres in 1991 and 20,000 acres in 1992. Small experimental plots of crambe exist in other states. For 1992 crambe for seed production was contracted on 1,000 acres in North Dakota and 200 acres in Nebraska and Kansas. Inputs and management practices similar to small grains and its unique use as a non-food crop may make crambe a profitable new enterprise for North Dakota farmers.
Description
Crambe is an erect annual herb with large pinnately lobed leaves similar to mustard leaves. Plant heights typically vary between 24 and 36 inches, depending on the season and plant density. The crop exhibits an indeterminate flowering habit and may continue to set seed in late season. The flowers are white, numerous and small. The round seeds are borne singly and are about 1/8 inch in diameter. Each seed is enclosed in a hull or pod which usually remains on the seed after harvest.

Lupin
Author: Theresa Golz , Market Research Specialist,
NDSU Institute for Business and Industry Development Series Editor: Dwight Aakre , Farm Mangement Specialist,
NDSU Extension Service Lupin has been cultivated for at least 2,000 years, and probably was first raised in Egypt, or at least in the general Mediterranean region. The lupin plant, like other grain legumes (beans, peas, lentils), fixes atmospheric nitrogen and produces seed high in protein. Of the more than 300 species of the genus Lupinus , only five are cultivated. Many lupins have high levels of alkaloids (bitter tasting compounds) that make the seed unpalatable and sometimes toxic. Historically, lupin alkaloids have been removed from the seed by soaking. But German plant breeders in the 1920s produced the first selections of alkaloid-free or "sweet" lupin, which can be directly consumed by humans or livestock. Lupins are grown as both a forage and grain legume in the USSR, Poland, Germany, South Africa, and the Mediterranean, and as a cash crop in Australia where they are exported to the European and East Asian feed markets.
Adaptation
Lupins are best adapted to regions with sandy or sandy loam soils and cool temperatures.

Key sector trends Saskatchewan sector The pulse industry in Western Canada has experienced tremendous growth. Total pulse and special crops production is forecast to increase by 24 per cent compared to 2001/02 while seeded area is predicted to remain constant. By 2005, Canada will account for an estimated 48 per cent of pea trade, 63 per cent of lentil trade, and 45 per cent of chickpea trade worldwide. Production value of pulses in Canada is projected to increase to nearly $2 billion by 2005, with the majority of production taking place in Saskatchewan. In 2001, approximately 300,000 tonnes of peas went to feed in Western Canada. I. History:
Fababean is an annual legume known botanically as Vicia faba L. The crop is known by many names, most of which refer to a particular subgroup rather than the whole species. Common names for fababean include the large-seeded broadbeans or windsorbeans ( Vicia faba var. major ), horsebeans ( Vicia Faba var. equina ), and the small, round-oval seeded tickbean or pigeon bean ( Vicia faba var. minor). The varieties grown in Manitoba are small to medium in seed size and belong to the minor and equina group. Fababeans are a versatile speciality crop that has proven itself to many Manitoba, Canada farmers in the past 15 years. In 1988 there was over 122,000 acres of fababeans produced in Manitoba.

    Nursery Dear Customer,
Thank you for your interest in our rare plants. The response received from customers, radio stations, newpapers and magazines around the country have been overwhelming. One of the most difficult challenges we face as a business is to keep all these rare plants in stock so there will be a good selection to choose from when you make your order. The wheels of propagation are slow and we find ourselves with only limimited quantities of some items. At this point in time, it will take between one to two years to replace our product line. Until that time, we will be working on botanical collections in South America and Asia and researching rare crops. If you ever call, send us a fax or e-mail us and no one seems to be answering, remember and smile; summer or winter, spring or autumn, the garden is glorious. Take a moment to embrace it wherever you are, and wait patiently for our new catalog and shipping dates. For those of you on our mailing list, be assured that you will receive notice in the mail when our plants are ready. If you would like, please browse the cataloge on line at
