A Short History of Croatia
Timeline of Defining Events Croatian history is intrinsically interwoven with the history of the name "Hrvat". Although there is no definitive history of the origin or meaning of the name "Hrvat" (Croat), there are several theories that explain the origins of Croats and their name. Some contend that "Hrvat" is of Slavic extraction while others suggest that it is of Persian origin. Still others, however, maintain that the name is indigenous, meaning "friend," "sunny land," or "owning much land." Croatia enjoys a rich political and cultural history, marked by the following moments: Emergence of Croatian Statehood
Croats arrived in their present homeland in the 7th century.
In 679, Croats entered into a treaty with Pope Agatho, and Croats accepted Christianity during the rule of Prince Viseslav in 800.
Viceroy Trpimir, an ancestor of the Croatian dynasty of Trpimirovic, ruled Dalmatian Croatia. In a letter dated 852, the name Hrvat (Croat) was recorded for the first time on the Adriatic coast.
Pope John VII blessed Croatian Prince Branimir, Croatian clergy and Croatian people in St. Peter Church in Rome on May 21, 879, the first international recognition of Croatia.

HISTORY OF THE CROATIAN STATE
Croatia enjoys a rich political and cultural history, marked by the following moments: Emergence of Croatian Statehood
Croatia first emerged as a nation-state in 925 when Ban Tomislav united Pannonian and Dalmatian Croatia and was crowned the first Croatian King.
In 1094 the Bishopric of Zagreb was founded. Under the archdiocese of Ostrogon until 1180, and the archdiocese of Kalocza from 1180 to 1152, Zagreb was in 1852 elevated to the rank of an independent archdiocese.
The Baska tablet, one of the oldest and most valuable texts in the Croatian language and Glagolic script, was written in 1100. It details land King Zvonimir gave to the abbey of St. Lucia in Draga Bascanska and the construction of the St. Lucia Church.

The Hotel Esplanade owes much of its mystique to its proximity to Glavni Kolodvor, the Capital train station, which, back when the hotel was built, was a major stop on the Orient Express. The hotel was erected upon a flat stretch of ground that contained a skating rink, hence its name– Esplanade, meaning plateau in Spanish. Upon completion it was hailed as "the triumph of home architecture and craft".

http://www.inet.hr/~mamodric/history/
The history of Sucuraj
Sucuraj exists more than 2300 years and through its history was many times totally destroyed and rebuilt. The first known inhabitants of Sucuraj were the Illyrians; their queen Teuta had a place here in 3 rd century BC. In the 7 th and 8 th century the Croats who lived here till today colonized Sucuraj. Through its history Sucuraj was under many masters and different countries: Illyrians, Romans, Croats, Venice, French, Austrians, and Italians… Only in the 20 th century Sucuraj was a part of 6 different countries. The oldest monumental building in Sucuraj is the old Augustan (today Franciscan) monastery. When was it exactly built is unknown, but it was first rebuilt in 1309 and lastly in 1994. Sucuraj got its name from the church St. George that is mentioned in the Statue of Hvar from 1331. That church was destroyed at the end of the 19 th century, and a new one was built. Most of the inhabitants of Sucuraj come from the coast in the 15 th century, fledging from the Turks. From that time till today preserved church of St. Anthony built in 1663. Partially preserved is the old Venetian fortress (fortica) built in 1613.
